The Patriots have a log jam in the bottom half of their WR depth chart. According to insider Jeff Howe, Danny Amendola and rookie Aaron Dobson are the only locks to make the opening-day roster. That leaves Julian Edelman, Donald Jones, Michael Jenkins, rookie Josh Boyce and recently-signed LaVelle Hawkins to battle for 3-4 spots. Edelman should be safe as long as he can move past that bum foot. And Boyce would need to flop to end up getting cut. Our money is on Jones winning the 5th spot. Of course, none of these guys are great bets for fantasy value with Amendola and TEs Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski likely to dominate targets.

Arm surgery, partying, infection, partying, rehab, partying – it’s been an offseason filled with anesthesia and booze for Rob Gronkowski.
With recent reports about the former Pro Bowler’s recovery from a broken forearm ranging from glowingly optimistic to frustratingly somber, pinpointing exactly what the tight end is worth has been an exercise in futility. Patriots insider Mike Reiss hears that TE Aaron Hernandez "can expect about a four-month recovery period" from his shoulder surgery. Reiss adds that it's possible Hernandez starts training camp on the PUP list. That contradicts a report last week that called the procedure a "minor scope" and said Hernandez might be ready in time for June minicamp. We're not expecting to get a concrete timetable from the Pats. Reiss at least says Hernandez will be ready for the start of the regular season, "barring any unexpected setbacks." We'll continue to keep a close eye on his recovery. For now, we'd still feel comfortable targeting Hernandez in the 6th or 7th round of fantasy drafts.

The Patriots have been pretty well set at tight end for the past few years. Rob Gronkowski turned in the most productive season by a tight end in NFL history back in 2011.
Aaron Hernandez can be top-three player at that position.
But injuries have thrown what was a humongous advantage for New England into a state of flux. Gronkowski has a left forearm infection stemming from a couple of breaks to the bone last season and may not be ready to play in September.
Hernandez recently underwent shoulder surgery. So, who's next? It's former Giants tight end Jake Ballard.

It doesn't sound like the shoulder will be an issue this season, although we can never be sure with the Patriots. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has learned that Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery this offseason. No details on the extent of the injury, when it occurred or when he went under the knife. Hernandez is expected to miss OTAs and minicamp, but the "likelihood" is that he'll be ready for training camp, per Rapoport. So both of New England's stud TEs are now on the mend. For Hernandez, it's another line in a laundry list of injuries. He's missed 10 games across his first 3 NFL seasons with hip, knee and ankle problems. Barring a setback, it doesn't sound like the shoulder will be an issue for the 2013 season. But Hernandez's ability to stay on the field will continue to be a concern.

Ballard was dumped by the G-Men this past June and scooped up by the Patriots the next day. He had a productive 2012 campaign, tallying 604 yards and 4 TDs in 14 games. Per Reiss, Ballard's recovery is "coming along nicely." But he obviously wouldn't carry any fantasy appeal in New England behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Pro Football Talk hears from a league source that Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski will miss the rest of the playoffs after reinjuring his forearm in Sunday's game against the Texans. Gronk will reportedly need to undergo another surgery. He should be fine for the 2013 season, but it's a big loss for New England's current playoff run. WR Wes Welker and TE Aaron Hernandez figure to dominate targets the rest of the way.

Out for postseasonLast year, the Patriots had to try to win the Super Bowl with an injured
Rob Gronkowski. This year, they'll have to try to win a championship without him at all. Gronkowski re-injured his forearm during the first quarter of Sunday's game. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Gronkowski needs surgery. He'll miss the rest of the postseason.
Gronkowski injured the arm again while falling to the ground, trying to make a catch. The original injury occurred on November 18. He returned in Week 17, catching two passes for 42 yards against the Dolphins. (

So much for Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski being healthy for the playoffs. It took just seven plays in today's divisional round win over the Texans for Gronkowski to re-injure his already once-broken left forearm, and this latest injury will cost him the rest of the season. A source has told ProFootballTalk.com that Gronkowski needs surgery.
The injury came on Gronkowski's only target of the game. He couldn't haul in a pass down the sideline and as he fell to the ground, he put out his left forearm to break his fall. Something broke alright. Gronkowski originally broke the forearm on Nov. 18. He returned for the regular-season finale on Dec. 30, catching two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.
