The league has suspended Seahawks DE Bruce Irvin for 4 games for violating the performance-enhancing drugs policy. That will likely leave Seattle's defense without its top 2 sack guys from last year to open the season. DE Chris Clemons is working his way back from an ACL tear he suffered in the playoff win at Washington. The Seahawks added DE Cliff Avril and DL Michael Bennett in free agency, so one could slide into Irvin's pass-rushing role to open the season. The plan has been for Bennett to man the 3-technique tackle spot. It's also a significant blow to the IDP prospects for Irvin, who would have carried serious sleeper potential. At least the Seahawks open with Carolina, San Francisco, Jacksonville and Houston -- not

Michael Bennett gets 1-year deal in Seattle
Source: Draft Sharks
The Seattle Seahawks have brought in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Michael Bennett on a 1-year, $5 million deal. It's a much smaller pact than expected for one of the market's best D-linemen, same as DE Cliff Avril's Seattle deal. In Bennett and Avril, the Seahawks add 2 players who spent the past 2 seasons as full-time left ends. Bennett looks more the part of the typical strong side DE and plays the run much better than his fellow signee. Avril has produced many more sacks than Bennett and seems the more likely fit for Chris Clemons' role at right end. Clemons, of course, suffered an ACL tear in the playoff win at Washington. Bruce Irvin, the 1st-round pick a year ago, looks like he'll stick with his situational-rusher role.

Former Lions DE Cliff Avril has reached a 2-year deal with the Seahawks. It's a surprisingly short contract for a 26-year-old pass rusher with 29 sacks over the past 3 years. Seattle gets a guy to help fill the void while DE Chris Clemons works back from an ACL tear. Avril might not slot into Clemons' RDE role, which could go to 2012 1st-round draft pick Bruce Irvin. Avril played LDE for the Lions and made his living off his speed. That's much the same game that Clemons and Irvin play. Clemons, who will turn 32 in October, could be a candidate for release. His $8.17 million cap number would drop to $4.3 million in that case, and the Seahawks could choose to spread it over 2 years. Either way, Avril should be set up to approximate his

Bruce Irvin is ready for the first start of his NFL career in the Divisional Round playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Jan. 13. He set a franchise rookie record with eight sacks this season. He'll not only be called upon to continue pressuring the quarterback, but he'll need to help stop the run, too.
Huddle Up: The rookie will be counted on in a big way Sunday with the team's leading sacker, Chris Clemons, being lost to a knee injury in the wild-card round. The Falcons haven't been an especially effective running team, but they'll be sure to test Irvin with some traps, draws and power runs to his side of the field.

The Seahawks feared right away that DE Chris Clemons tore his ACL on the demolition derby course that passed for FedEX Field on Sunday. That fear has reportedly been confirmed. Clemons tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee. It's a devastating injury for anyone (not named Adrian Peterson). It could prove particularly detrimental to Clemons, whose game is predicated on speed rushing. For now, IDP owners have to assume he'll be worthless in fantasy next season. We'll see where he is come summer. The injury could propel 2012 1st-round pick Bruce Irvin into a potential breakout situation in 2013. Irvin proved just the kind of pass rusher the team believed in limited duty as a rookie.

On Tuesday, Dr. James Andrews may deliver some bad news to the future of the Washington Redskins. On Monday, he delivered some bad news to the team that just dispatched the Redskins from the playoffs. As the Seahawks feared, defensive end Chris Clemons has a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season. He also has a torn meniscus. The injury was confirmed by Clemons' agent to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Clemons, 31, leads the team with 11.5 sacks and 37 hurries. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Of course, Matt Ryan will like not having to deal with Clemons, but rookie
Bruce Irvin, who will now replace Clemons in an every-down role, has eight sacks and 23 hurries, second-most on the team. Unless Clemons is able to steal Adrian Peterson's

The Seattle Seahawks escaped with a narrow victory over the Washington Redskins, but may have lost defensive end Chris Clemons for quite some time. Pro Football Talk is reporting that the team believes Clemons tore his ACL. The 31-year-old leads the team with 11.5 sacks. He will have an MRI done on Monday. He was injured during the third quarter and was not able to return. Results should be conclusive very soon. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Not only is Clemons a solid pass-rusher, he performs well against the run. After a hot start, the Redskins fizzled on offense and that is partially due to Clemons. His numbers (two unassisted tackles) certainly did not jump off the page though. Rookie
Bruce Irvin will need to step up against Atlanta next week.

On Sunday, Detroit running back Joique Bell again served as the Lions' closer, taking nearly all the backfield touches in the fourth quarter. His team escaped with a win ,28-24, as Bell gained 35 yards over the final 15 minutes.

Both Jeremy Mincey and Matt Shaughnessy have terrific matchups as the Jaguars and Raiders face off in Oakland this week. Both have had their ups and downs in their careers but we should put them in the lineup this week.
When playing, Shaughnessy has proven to be a DL1 option and we should expect that production going forward.
Mincey on the other hand, had a disappointing day against the Bears, but the Jaguars fell behind early and it put the Bears in a situation to run more high percentage plays, and unfortunately Mincey didn’t get it done in tackles. That can happen even to the best defensive linemen so consider it just a bad day and get him in the lineup

Ryan Tannehill has got 9.8 YPA over the past two weeks with both games coming on the road. He's also taken a respectable 10 sacks over five games and has one of the weaker receiving groups in the league to throw to. Moreover, Jake Long has been a big disappointment so far. Tannehill's 2:6 TD:INT ratio isn't pretty, but there are plenty of other reasons for optimism, especially considering how raw he was entering the league. I didn't see that coming and certainly not so fast…Andy Dalton entered with an 8.8 YPA and eight touchdown passes over the first four games of the season, but Miami's defense held him to 5.4 YPA and a 1:2 TD:INT ratio. And the Dolphins' run D continues to dominate, allowing an NFL-low 2.7 YPC. This team is

Huddle Up: It's worth noting that Lynch was run down from behind on that 70-yard burst by rookie linebacker Bruce Irvin. No indication yet that Lynch's offseason off-the-field exploits will earn him a Roger Goodell vacation, and with Seattle unsettled at the quarterback position he's in line to carry the bulk of the Seahawks' offensive load.

Marshawn Lynch's 2011 campaign was not exactly short on highlights, as he rushed for 1,204 yards and 12 touchdowns, accounting for a huge percentage of his team's total offensive production. Lynch shifted into full Beast Mode around Week 5, then found a new level — some previously undiscovered mode beyond Beast Mode — when the calendar flipped to November.
For me, the signature run of his ridiculous season was this first quarter TD run against the Eagles in Week 13. Lynch plowed into a gang of would-be/should-be tacklers at the line of scrimmage, was
