The Bucs will reportedly let Michael Smith and Mike James compete for the backup RB job. James is a rookie power back, while Smith, an undersized speedster, enters his 2nd year. Both guys were late-round picks. They’d likely share carries in the event of an injury to Doug Martin. We wouldn’t bother grabbing either guy as a handcuff. There’s still a chance the cap-flush Bucs sign a veteran like Ahmad Bradshaw.

When Mr. Irrelevant, South Carolina tight end Justice Cunningham, had his name called in front of a small group of reasonably sauced lingerers at last month’s NFL Draft, Fantasyland’s finest quickly began formulating thoughts and assembling cheat sheets for this year’s fake football drafts.
Mock season officially kicked off …
Over the next several weeks, armchair quarterbacks of various backgrounds will hone their draft skills in preparation for main events come August. During these exercises, participants will tinker with new strategies, rack their brains over complicated backfields and shout out expletives when desired players are pilfered just before their pick, all the while proclaiming

Doug Martin touched the ball 368 times last year. Not that the Bucs seem to have a problem with that.
Martin is one of the best young running backs in the league and has the body to take on that kind of workload. But in the event that he is fell by injury, the Bucs need someone more suited than Brian Leonard to be their No. 2 guy. And it sounds like they found him in sixth-round rookie Mike James.
According to Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, Bucs general manager Mark Dominik quot;repeatedly" mentioned James' name during a Friday radio interview and said he has the "inside track" on being Martin's direct backup. Bucs GM Mark Dominik says 6th-round rookie Mike James has the "inside track" to the #2 RB job. James hails from Miami, where he was part of a committee backfield. He topped out this past year with 147 carries and 621 yards. He was busy in the passing game, though, hauling in 30 balls for 344 yards and 3 scores. James goes 5'10 and 223 pounds with a 4.58 40 time. His competition for backup duties will come from Brian Leonard, who's more of a pass-catching FB, and 2012 7th-rounder Michael Smith. None of these guys will have standalone value, and the winner of the #2 spot will hardly be worth considering even as Doug Martin's handcuff. If Martin goes down, Tampa would likely go with a committee attack.

When it comes to rookies conventional wisdom no longer applies. With a few notable exceptions, most first-year players, particularly quarterbacks, were once thought to be multi-year projects, the Steve McNair approach – observe, learn and wait.
But in this day and age where instant gratification is constantly sought after, time isn’t of the essence. Several players picked in April are immediately pressed into competitive situations where often times they emerge as the go-to option, evident in the rapid ascension of guys like Robert Griffin III, Doug Martin and Josh Gordon, to name a few, last year. Because nuances from the college game are commonplace

It contains players who most likely would have been cut if no trade had been worked out, but here it is: The Patriots sent a seventh-round pick in this draft and running back Jeff Demps to the Buccaneers for running back LeGarrette Blount. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The fantasy values here are close to nil. Demps, a silver medalist in the 2012 Olympics, wants to play football, but he has made it clear that he is first concentrated on running track. If he gets on the football field, he could be a gimmick player for the Bucs, but there's no guarantee that he'll ever see playing time. Tampa Bay needs to get a better backup behind

However, there is no palpable concern that Lynch will miss or be restrained in Sunday's playoff game against the Falcons. Lynch played through a back injury for much of the regular season. Back in week 11 I told everyone to buy low on Alfred Morris after he came off his two worst games of the season. Since I told you that Morris has averaged 17.85 fantasy points a week, and finished the season ranked #2 in rushing yards only behind superhuman Adrian Peterson (who isn’t even real). You’re welcome. Morris is just the kind of physical downhill runner Mike Shanahan loves, and should continue to be a pivotal part of the Redskins offense next season. With Robert Griffin III’s health questions at the end of the year, I think it’s a safe bet that RG3 will not carry the ball quite as much as he did this year. The Skin’s philosophy is still run first, and I believe Morris will receive even more of a workload next year. I have Morris higher than most ranked as a top 5 RB next year behind only Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Martin. I believe he is worth a 1st round pick, and should be a very safe and reliable player week in, week out.

In a year where quarterbacks were consistently front page news, most rushing attacks took a back seat, further damaging the position's once sterling reputation. Though new points sources emerged (e.g. Alfred Morris, Doug Martin and Trent Richardson) and Adrian Peterson, less than a year from major reconstructive knee surgery, posted the greatest single season, regardless of position, in NFL history, RBs collectively suffered yet again. Just 12 rushers averaged 12.0 fantasy points or better, down from 16 in 2012 and 17 in 2011. Suffice it to say, with certified workhorses the lone exception, RB remains a position in transition. Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said that he will not lighten the workload of RB
Doug Martin because the team has been eliminated from playoff contention. Schiano said the team is trying to establish a culture of winning.
Huddle Up: Good news for Martin's fantasy owners who survived the RB's surprisingly dismal 35 total yards on 12 touches this past week against the Saints.

If you happened to draft Brandon Lloyd this past summer like I did, you’ve probably been shaking your head when watching the Patriots play on prime-time television the past two weeks as the veteran has looked like a Pro Bowl star. In that time Lloyd has been targeted a whopping 25-times, hauling in 17-receptions for 279-yards a score and even picking up a fumble recovery in the end zone for another touchdown.
Problem is, many of you didn’t have him in your lineup let alone on your team at this point, after Lloyd struggled throughout the season and was demoted out of two receiver sets against the Dolphins and Colts.
Outside of Wes Welker and Lloyd

For all the success Doug Martin has had in his rookie season, fantasy owners had to be disappointed and a little shocked by his numbers against the Saints last week. Playing against one of the worst run defenses in the league, Martin appeared to be a shoe in for over 100-yards and at least one score, but the Saints built up a big lead in the first half, forcing the Buccaneers to stick with the passing game.
Don’t expect the same situation this week as Tampa Bay heads back home to play the Rams. Look for St. Louis to give them a competitive game, but the game scripts will play out the way we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from this team most of the year, and

As an Arian Foster owner in numerous leagues, it was frustrating to see him not score in a game for just the second time all season, especially at home in such a favorable matchup, but he really piled on the yards late, finishing with 165 rushing, so it's tough to complain too much. In fact, his 6.1 YPC was by far the best of the year. He also had a 27-yard touchdown run called back due to a hold…Reggie Wayne picked a poor time to have his three lowest yardage totals of the season, which have occurred over the past three games, including a season-low 14 yards Sunday…Vick Ballard was highly impressive. He's an interesting keeper league commodity moving forward…Sunday marked

For a solid six weeks in the middle of the season, Josh Freeman had full Circle of Trust privileges. The fourth-year quarterback rolled up 16 touchdown passes against just three picks over that stretch, and the surging Buccaneers looked like a team no one wanted to face in the playoffs.
Alas, the Pirate Ship has taken on water in the last month. Maybe it's worse than that. If you needed the Tampa Bay offense at New Orleans in Week 15 - a tasty matchup on paper - you're probably at the bottom of the ocean now, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. No one expected the Bucs to come up with a Big Easy Bagel.
Wanting some answers, I rewatched the Tampa Bay-New Orleans tape Monday morning. Was this a

In the NFL, it's not often that we can accurately say we've never seen something before, that an individual or team accomplishment is completely without precedent in the league's 90-plus-year history. But at this point, I think that's where we are with Adrian Peterson.
All-Day rushed for another 212 yards on Sunday, raising his league-leading season total to 1,812. Here's the highlight run, an 82-yarder. Peterson has topped the 200-yard plateau in two of

All six New Orleans linebackers have a negative run grade this season, which might mean plenty of handoffs to Bucs running back
Doug Martin.

Finally! Dynasty owners like myself with David Wilson on their bench have been waiting for the ultra talented rookie to receive an opportunity to show case what he can do. Earlier in the season he had a long touchdown run against the Browns, but because of early fumbling issues and pass protection concerns, Andre Brown moved past Wilson on the depth chart.
Brown was placed on injured reserve a few weeks back and the Giants countered with Craig Lumpkin as added depth. Lumpkin saw a few snaps against the Redskins, but the Giants decided to use Ahmad Bradshaw as the teams feature back again as a counter to the Brown’s injury, rather than working Wilson in as a
