San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he believes in using multiple running backs that can do different things on offense. "I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said. "In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day." RBs
Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James likely will see playing time this season.
Huddle Up: Baalke's comments are the sharp pin deflating Gore's fantasy value; plan accordingly.

Our View: Will
Frank Gore yield to this approach in 2013? He's still performing at a high level and finished 2012 as the 11th best RB in fantasy football. If healthy, we should see more from Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James this season.

49ers RB Frank Gore turns 30 today. That number is often a death knell for RBs. Especially ones with Gore's injury history and career workload. That adds meaning to GM Trent Baalke's recent comments about his ideal backfield. "I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said. Because RBC Marcus Lattimore suffered multiple knee injuries and underwent surgeries in college, the 49ers rookie is expected to be placed on the non-football injury list before training camp rather than the PUP list. Either way, the designation would keep the back out for the first six games. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Realistically, the former South Carolina star is not expected to contribute much at all as a rookie because of his brutal knee injuries, the last one coming in late October. The list designation doesn't mean much either other than to note those hoping for an early season stunner should look for such surprizes elsewhere.
Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter will carry the load this season so the 49ers have no reason to even comtemplate

We don’t have a deep class of running backs this year, with starter upside. It’s probably a good idea to pass on running backs in the middle rounds of your draft if you should miss out on the first eight backs on this list.
Giovani Bernard, CIN (1st Round) -
Bernard had a hard upbringing as his mom passed away when he was a kid and he even lived with another family for a time, while his Dad went off to look for work.
I love this kid and his pass receiving skills will make him a start in PPR leagues. For now, he will have to play second fiddle to BenJarvus Green-Ellis, but expect the North Carolina star to take over the

RB Marcus Lattimore was selected by the 49ers in the 4th round on Saturday. It's another step in his attempted return from last year's devastating knee injury. Lattimore tore his ACL, LCL and PCL in October. That followed a torn ACL in 2011. There's no guarantee he'll ever play again, and he's definitely a long shot to make a 2013 impact. The 'Niners don't need him to, though. With Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James holding down the backfield, they could opt to "redshirt" Lattimore this year. And if this guy can get back anywhere close to 100%, he could be an absolute force. Lattimore is a rocked-up 5'11, 221-pounder with impressive power and explosion. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry with 38 TDs in 28

The San Francisco 49ers have selected South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore with the 131st overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Our View: The 49ers keep on getting richer. Falling into the perfect position, Lattimore will have time to heal and get right behind
Frank Gore who battled his own leg injuries. When healthy, Lattimore has the potential to be the best back in this draft.
Patient fantasy owners could have a great back down the road.

Huddle Up: Hunter as been a solid No. 2 man in back of starter Frank Gore over the past 2 seasons, but his 2012 injury opened the door for LaMichael James, and Hunter likely is going to have to beat out the second-year RB to get his job back.

Roughly seven weeks ago the final seconds ticked off the Superdome clock. Confetti cascaded from the rafters. A champion was crowned. Baltimore fended off a late-charge by San Francisco to take Super Bowl XLVII. Its fans entered a perpetual state of euphoria. The rest of the pigskin community, however, mourned.
Tears streamed down wing-stained checks. Jerseys went into hibernation. Fantasy discussions around the water-cooler subsided. Life became unfulfilled.
The annual football famine was officially underway.
Now multiple firings, several cuts and one bloated Joe Flacco contract later, the NFL is again a hot topic. In recent days, seismic trades (e.g. Alex Smith to KC, Percy

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in Minnesota Vikings WR Percy Harvin if he becomes available in a trade this offseason. The 49ers are expected to have around 13 or 14 picks in the 2013 NFL Draft and could use some in a possible trade.
Huddle Up: San Fran seemingly would be a good fit for the disgruntled Harvin as the Niners are searching for a complement for wideout Michael Crabtree. That would give the Niners an offense featuring Crabtree, QB Colin Kaepernick, RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis and Harvin -- scary, scary stuff for opposing defenses.
