Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert lined up at tight end on both ends of the offensive line as well as a slot receiver during the team's rookie minicamp. Eifert said he believes he is picking up the offense relatively quick.
Huddle Up: Eifert is expected to be the "move" tight end in Cincinnati, with Jermaine Gresham relatively stationary as the "in-line" tight end. They'll still split looks, but Eifert could cut into slot receiver targets as well which would give him a leg up as a fantasy entity.

Bengals TE Tyler Eifert worked on both sides of the line and in the slot on the team's first day of rookie minicamp on Friday. He's already noticing similarities between Cincy's offense and the one he ran at Notre Dame. “A lot of the things I’m learning are a lot of the same plays we had in with two TEs — move me around in different positions,” he said. “Today I was out in the slot quite a bit. I think I’m picking it up pretty fast.” A big, fluid athlete, Eifert is capable of making an immediate impact in the passing game. Of course, fellow TE Jermaine Gresham and stud WR A.J. Green will demand their fair share of targets. Eifert figures to be too inconsistent to be a fantasy starter in 2013. But he'll

The Bengals showed they are not above being trendy by spending a first round pick on Notre Dame Tyler Eifert despite already having
Jermaine Gresham on the roster. Now comes the matter of implementing effective two-TE sets. During the team's mini-camp, just like he was with the Golden Domers, Eifert is lining up just about all over the field. "A lot of the things I'm learning are a lot of the same plays we had in with two tight ends mdash; move me around in different positions," Eifert said on Friday. "Today I was out in the slot quite a bit. I think I'm picking it up pretty fast."
FANTASY ANALYSIS: One of the real bummers of the NFL Draft is that the top-rated tight ended didn't land with a TE-needy squad, but rather one with a

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden indicated the
team could use two-tight end sets more often this season with TEs
Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert. Gruden said the team will still
be using three-receiver sets like they did last season.
Huddle Up: Gresham (Cincy) and Eifert (Notre Dame) combined for 114 catches,
1,422 yards and 9 TDs in 2012 and gives Guden & Co. another
offensive dimension to go along with the 3-WR sets and run-heavy
looks utilizing BenJarvus Green-Ellis and/or second-round rookie
Giovani Bernard.

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he believes TE Tyler Eifert can be a difference-maker for the team if he becomes more of a blocker. Gruden said the team will see what kind of blocker Eifert is during their rookie minicamp and work with him from there.
Huddle Up: Improved blocking would likely keep Eifert on the field over Jermaine Gresham in one-tight end sets; he's already being pegged as the "move" tight end in two-TE formations. Expect the Bengals to find ways to use Eifert to take advantage of coverages geared towards stopping A.J. Green.

Bengals OC Jay Gruden confirmed that the team will use more 2-TE sets this year with Tyler Eifert joining Jermaine Gresham on the field. Cincy used 2 TEs on just 23% of their plays last year. They went with 3 WRs 53% of the time. Those numbers could easily flip-flop in 2013. "It's very easy to take out that third receiver and put a tight end in there and call the same plays," Gruden said. "A lot of it is the same thing. It's a matter of keeping the personnel on the field that you want to dictate. Every year you have a draft and you have some new toys, so things change. You have to adjust." It sounds like Gruden is essentially treating Eifert as a WR -- good news for his fantasy value. Meanwhile, slot man Andrew Hawkins

Tyler Eifert, CIN (1st Round) -
Perhaps a sign the Bengals aren’t happy with what they’ve seen from Jermaine Gresham as they went for the top tight end in this years draft, with one of their two first-round picks.
I had the chance to hear an interview with Eifert on Movin’ The Chains, about a week before the draft and they asked him if he’d visited any teams for workouts.
To my surprise Eifert told them he hadn’t visited teams, but radio host Pat Kirwan said that was a good thing in his case because it meant teams “knew” what they were getting in him.
While Eifert isn’t in the greatest situation for the early

When it comes to rookies conventional wisdom no longer applies. With a few notable exceptions, most first-year players, particularly quarterbacks, were once thought to be multi-year projects, the Steve McNair approach – observe, learn and wait.
But in this day and age where instant gratification is constantly sought after, time isn’t of the essence. Several players picked in April are immediately pressed into competitive situations where often times they emerge as the go-to option, evident in the rapid ascension of guys like Robert Griffin III, Doug Martin and Josh Gordon, to name a few, last year. Because nuances from the college game are commonplace

The Bengals used a first-round pick on a tight end for the second time in four years Thursday. Cincinnati spent the No. 21 selection on Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert. The Bengals already have
Jermaine Gresham, the 21st pick from the 2010 draft, who has gone to the past two Pro Bowls. But the Bengals needed to add more firepower to their offense. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Granted, I didn't think they would add to that offense with another tight end. However, it's working out really well for the Patriots. In Cincinnati,
Gresham can be the in-line tight end while Eifert lines up all over the formation. He's not a speed merchant, but he has very, very good hands, and that's got to be something the Bengals coveted after

Huddle Up: The Bengals were projected by many to go with a RB or WR here but were thrilled to get the top available in Eifert, the former Notre Dame standout who will pair with veteran TE Jermaine Gresham and ideally take some defensive attention away from No. 1 WR A.J. Green.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed free-agent FB/TE E. Alex Smith (Browns) to a one-year deal with a $840,000 base salary and a $65,000 signing bonus.
Huddle Up: Smith made a strong first impression with 41 catches for 367 yards in his rookie season, but that's now been 8 years ago. Those 41 grabs, in fact, have been a single-season career high for Smith who only caught 28 passes and 1 TD over the past 3 seasons with the Browns. In other words, it's going to take a Jermaine Gresham injury for Smith to gain any fantasy traction.

The NFL Playoffs are now set after 17 grueling weeks of play! There are a ton of story lines to follow. Among the more intriguing are three rookie quarterbacks, one of whom is guaranteed to win a playoff game in their first year; a second year quarterback who took over in week ten; a Colt’s team who went from worst last year to a playoff team this year, riding an emotional high after the return of their head coach from a successful bout against leukemia; and a team that went from the favorite for a first round bye to the number three seed in a few short weeks.
These are the overall rankings for the playoffs. Some formats require you to choose from all the teams in the playoffs, others allow you to go week to week. These

Perhaps the dumbest thing a fantasy manager can possibly do is publish player ranks on a mainstream sports site on the morning of a draft. Definitely not recommended. Poor strategy, requiring a special combination of stupidity and hubris. Far from ideal.
Nonetheless, I'm doing it today. My first fantasy playoff draft is coming up in just a few short hours, and I'm publishing ranks in advance. (Again: Unwise). Obviously I'd prefer to post this thing much later in the afternoon, after the draft, but my schedule is pretty jammed. For the first time in the fantasy era, a pair of tight ends were weighed by drafters at the Round 1 turn. In the eyes of millions, Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, off historic 2012 campaigns, were position titans equal to or better than some of the virtual game's most established wide receivers. Unfortunately, injuries and inconsistency hindered the duo in the follow-up. Overall, after a year of unprecedented production, the position as a whole slipped. Though still deep, only four TEs finished the season with at least 120 total points in traditional formats, the lowest total since 2008. Below is our recap of this season's TE flames and lames with a quick look at what notable names could

High expectations this summer came crashing back to earth after fantasy owners lost Aaron Hernandez to a bad ankle injury during the second week of the season. Hernandez struggled to find his way back to the active roster playing in only two games from week three to week eleven.
Over the past three weeks Hernandez has come back and performed for fantasy owners like we expected, an elite option at his position. During that span of time 26 receptions (no fewer than eight in a game), 247-yards and three touchdowns.

If there's one thing you can count on from NFL analysts, it's this: Every year, we declare that there's never been a season like the current one. So loaded with surprises. So full of unimaginable events. Who could have predicted any of this? No one.
Of course this is the stance most of us have to take, because it's our job to predict things, and the NFL remains stubbornly unpredictable. The only thing truly consistent about the modern league, year to year, is its tendency to shock us. (Well, that and the Patriots. But they were clearly sent by Skynet).
Today, our mission is to discuss the seven biggest surprise stars of 2012, with a few thoughts on their fantasy value next season — although you can

Outside of Jimmy Graham, Tony Gonzalez, Aaron Hernandez and Jason Witten it’s starting to get ugly at the tight end position for fantasy options. Super star names like Vernon Davis and Antonio Gates continue to play way below the expectations we have for them, while other options like Kyle Rudolph and Brandon Myers have good games then disappear for a week or two.
After the top names, look to Jermaine Gresham as the most reliable player for production. For the first time last week Gresham has had at least 43-yards in a game or he’s made up for it with a touchdown in the past six straight weeks.
Cincinnati is still pushing for the playoffs

For a few weeks the Jaguars have given us reason for optimism, but that's not the flavor of the day Friday. Meet us in Northern Florida and let's sort through it.
• The Cecil Shorts story has been a fun one, but it's on ice for Week 14. Jacksonville's leading receiver is dealing with post-concussion issues and won't play against the Jets.
Justin Blackmon might lead Jacksonville in targets this week but I can't endorse him - he'd expected to draw New York's cover ace, Antonio Cromartie. I'm also moving Chad Henne down in my rankings (he's no longer a QB2 on my clipboard). The one Jaguars pass catcher I do like this week, a little bit anyway, is TE Marcedes

The Raiders are horrible and changes will be coming in Oakland soon after the season is over, once again. For all the problems this team is having there is one man who won’t let this team down, nor his fantasy owners and that is Brandon Myers. Part of Myers success is the Raiders playing from behind every week, but give the young tight end credit as he’s put together 69 receptions for 721 yards and four scores on the season. Last week was a career game with 14-receptions, 130 yards and a touchdown against the Browns.
Myers skill-set and usage in the Raiders offense will continue to make him a more valuable option in PPR leagues rather than standard leagues, but we

• DeMarco Murray (foot) has done some work this week and looks like a decent bet to play Sunday night, though he's certainly not a sure thing. I'll sign off on a Murray play so long as you have a reasonable late-game caddy (someone in the Sunday night or Monday night game) that you can shift to in a pinch. If you can preemptively slot Murray in a flex spot, all the better - you're expanding your options. There is nothing guaranteed here.

Fantasy is a speculative game. Predict the future, and you look like a genius. Don't, and you're painfully human. Gazing into the crystal ball here's our view on 10 intriguing over/unders for Week 13.

Dalton — OVER. The Bills' defense has played better of late, and they have allowed a modest 7.3 YPA on the year, but Shorts has emerged as Jacksonville's clear WR1, and Chad Henne has been a big upgrade at QB. I actually expect the Jags to be close in this game, but it may require a lot of pass attempts with such a bad RB situation.

Couple the recent play of Chad Henne with Coach Mike Mularkey’s willingness to put the football up, and Marcedes Lewis has new life and fantasy relevance. Against the Texans, Lewis grabbed two touchdowns and came back last week for four receptions and 56 yards last week.
Lewis won’t be a game breaking option but we should expect thm to continue to with a pass heavy game plan going forward. Jacksonville is going to give Henne his chance to win a starting job and it’s time to take a look at what this team has in talented young receivers like Cecil Shorts and Justin Blackmon.
Where Lewis will be a factor is in the red zone and based on his ten touchdowns

For those who took Denver in survivor this week, it wasn't exactly smooth sailing, despite holding Brady Quinn to a 49.8 QB Rating…After a poor throw, Dan Dierdorf actually said that Peyton Manning's return from injury is "a work in progress." Yeah Dan, the guy who ranks second in the NFL in YPA and third in QB Rating and is on the short list if not the frontrunner to be the league MVP has really been slow to recover…Dwayne Bowe got just 3.4 YPT, as his quarterbacks continue to destroy his fantasy value…I was on board with going big on FAAB last week to acquire Ronnie Hillman, so it was pretty surprising to see Knowshon Moreno, who hadn't even been active since Week 2 and has been a huge disappointment throughout his

I'm not here to give anyone a history lesson on Thanksgiving. I assume we all know it dates back to at least 1969, when Led Zeppelin released its second record. (Hat tip to you, lads. Give my regards to Gerrod Street.)
Today's assignment is thanks with a fantasy spin: who are the fake football players most worthy of a hearty Thursday salute? We've collected the Fantasy Staff and we're in a friendly, positive mood. Raise those glasses high and let's appreciate the gladiators who sacrifice their bodies for our pretend glory.

So much for Vernon Davis struggling without Alex Smith. Second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick was terrific in his first start of his career on Monday night, and Davis was clearly featured in the offense. What has been another up and down season for Davis in terms of his stats, should turn into two solid performances in a row as San Francisco heads out to New Orleans this week.
While we shouldn’t expect the type of numbers Davis up against the Saints in the playoffs last year, consider him a lock to at least repeat the production he put up against the Bears, whether Kaepernick or Smith start at quarterback.

Cincinnati Bengals TE
Jermaine Gresham had six catches for 69 yards and came a yard of scoring a touchdown on a play in which he dragged a few defenders roughly five yards. 'He's playing like we expect Jermaine to keep playing; he's doing a great job,' head coach Marvin Lewis said. 'He's really had a good season, and he's getting better each and every week. He's putting the team on his shoulders.'
Gresham is closing in on setting the franchise record for catches and yards by a tight end in a single season.

It looked like Greg Olsen was off to a career year after the first four games of the season in which he collected at least six receptions in three of those games. As Cam Newton regressed so did the rest of the Panthers offense and all too often the game plan seemed to get away from their talented tight end.
In recent weeks Olsen’s numbers have come back to life and last week he had his top performance of the year with nine receptions for 102 yards and two touchdown scores. Oddly enough, Olsen was featured on the Panthers first drive but he seemed to fade out of the offense until a fourth-quarter drive gave him his second touchdown in garbage

Someone in Cincinnati needs to step up as a consistent No.2 option in the passing game. While Jermaine Gresham has the ability to be that option, he needs to show us he can put together consistent numbers.
Three weeks ago Gresham had 68 yards and a score, only to go for 19 yards before the teams bye week. Gresham bounced back against the Broncos with six receptions for 108 yards and for the second time in three weeks, he has a play of over 50 yards.
Because of the way the Bengals are structured as a team, Gresham should continue to benefit from the Bengals finding themselves in pass heavy situations weekly. Consider Gresham a low-end TE1 going forward, even if
