The Chiefs have signed WR Donnie Avery. He was inefficient in his lone season with the Colts, hauling in just 53.6% of his targets. He did finish with career highs in both catches (60) and yards (781) though. In an ideal world, Avery will slot in as KC's 3rd WR behind Dwayne Bowe and Jon Baldwin. But if Baldwin fails to take a step forward, Avery could serve as the #2 WR. That could be enough for him to garner WR3 attention in fantasy leagues. Meanwhile, T.Y. Hilton is locked in as the Colts' #2 WR. He carries major breakout potential in 2013.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star wrote Wednesday that the trade for quarterback Alex Smith quot;makes it likely" that the Chiefs will bring back wide receiver Dwayne Bowe either with a long-term contract or the franchise tag. Bowe caught 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns last season. He was the team's receiving leader in each of those categories. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The Chiefs must retain Bowe. They aren't going to use the first overall pick on a WR, and no one else on the roster is close to Bowe in terms of productivity. It's fair to say that the team's quarterback situation has stunted the growth of every wide receiver in this offense, but that still doesn't change the fact that 2011 first-round pick

New Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid now has a quarterback. The Chiefs acquired former 49ers starter Alex Smith, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.
While the deal cannot be officially announced March 12, ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reported on Twitter that the quot;Chiefs traded second-round pick, the second pick in the second round, to SF. Niners also got another conditional mid-round pick in 2014."
Smith, who directed the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in 2010 and finished third in QB rating last season, lost his job to rising star Colin Kaepernick midway through last season.
Not only is Smith's time in the Bay Area over, so is the Matt Cassel era in Kansas City. The Chiefs are expected to release the veteran QB, who went 1-7 in

The biggest news from NFL Combine weekend may have nothing to do with what takes place on the turf in Indianapolis. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense." FANTASY ANALYSIS: So, the Florida Times-Union sent a text message to Jaguars general manager David Caldwell about a possible Smith trade. According to the Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran, Caldwell responded via text with "not us." OK.
That leaves the Chiefs as the most sensible choice. But let's be clear: No matter whom the Chiefs' quarterback is last year, it won't

The Chiefs have already said that wide receiver Dwayne Bowe won't play this Sunday against the Raiders, but what will he do for the rest of the season? According to ProFootballTalk.com, Bowe should make himself comfortable on the sidelines because he won't play again until 2013. PFT was told by a league source Monday that Bowe will be placed on season-ending injured reserve as a result of the broken ribs he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Browns. FANTASY ANALYSIS:
Jon Baldwin and Terrance Copper will replace Bowe as the Chiefs' primary outside wide receivers, but they aren't worth a good, deep look in fanatasy leagues with 12 teams or less. Bowe's time in Kansas City is probably up since he is a free agent at the close of the season. He

The 28-year-old receiver is nearing his final days with the organization as an impending free agent. It is expected that second-year wideout
Jon Baldwin will see a big jump in playing time with Bowe at least a week. FANTASY ANALYSIS: It's been a rough year for Bowe. He is on pace for his least productive season excluding another injury-shortened season he experienced back in 2009. For the past two seasons, the former LSU star had caught at least 70 passes for over 1,100 receiving yards. Those numbers will drop by nearly a third during a season

Playing behind WRs Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston, and Dexter McCluster, Baldwin only got on the field for 21 of 69 offensive snaps. He finished without a a single target. “He’s trying to develop a role in the offense," HC Romeo Crennel said afterwards. “He’s working at it and I think eventually he will have his spot and he will be making plays. Fantasy football legends are not born and fantasy football leagues are not won in the early rounds of drafts. The difference between the title teams and the middle-of-the-road teams are the draft picks made in the late rounds.
When a 15th-round pick turns into a 1,000-yard rusher and your 16th-rounder turns into a 1,000-yard receiver, it is what puts a fantasy squad over the top. And there are always sleepers lurking in the late rounds just waiting to be drafted.
Look no further than last year when guys like Oakland’s Michael Bush, Dallas’ DeMarco Murray, Pittsburgh’s Antonio Brown and many others had super seasons without being selected in the early or middle rounds of most fantasy drafts. There are fantasy diamonds

Of the three most important positions in fantasy football, wide receiver is the one you can afford to wait on.
As torn ACLs continue to litter the headlines, it's becoming clear that running backs are less stable, making them more of an early priority. You only start one quarterback, meaning you can afford to wait to acquire one in your draft, but as the NFL evolves into more of a passing game, it will be hard for you to win your league without a top-tier gunslinger.
That leaves wide receivers.
Because of that transformation to a high-flying passing game, the depth of wideouts and tight ends—even more than quarterbacks—is at an all-time high. Sure, it would be nice to have Calvin Johnson or Julio Jones in

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said WR Jonathan
Baldwin (undisclosed) was not at organized team activities Friday, June 1, because of a medical issue. Crennel did not specify the issue but it may have something to do with recent migraine problems.

Baldwin has been performing well during organized team activities and could become the team's go-to receiver when he faces single coverage since he is 6-foot-4 and could win most of the jump balls thrown to him.

A broken thumb cost Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin most of training camp and the first 5 games of his rookie season last year. He never got comfortable in the offense and finished with just 254 yards and 1 TD. But teammate Steve Breaston has seen big improvement from Baldwin this offseason. “When he came back this offseason, he studied his playbook and he’s learned a lot," Breaston said. "The thing about that at receiver, when you know your offense and you know where to be, you play faster. You’re no longer thinking and your athletic ability takes over. You see (Baldwin) out there. There is a special half-dozen I think will emerge as fantasy mainstays in 2012. Here are six young players who should be fantasy studs in 2012:

We'll give you the four major positions tonight as you get ready for the four weeks ahead. Usual caveats apply. Assume basic scoring (non-PPR). I'll add comments later tonight and might tweak this list here and there.
One other point that needs to be made: the situation of your team will greatly shape how these ranks apply to you. Take Riley Cooper, for instance. I like him a lot for this week, but I actually cut him in one league where I won't have another meaningful game until Week 15 (and he faces the Jets then). It's conceivable that Cooper could be a good add for one owner and a good drop for a different owner in the same league. It's
