Matt Forte is preparing for a bigger role in the passing game this season.
Huddle Up: Forte has always been a yardage hound; since entering the league only Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, and Ray Rice have more yards from scrimmage. And Marc Trestman's WCO-based offense features plenty of throwing to the backs, which will play to Forte's... uh, forte. Just don't expect a bunch of touchdowns and you'll be fine.

Bears RB Matt Forte caught a career-low 44 balls in 2012. He expects his role in the passing game to grow this year under new HC Marc Trestman. "I would expect (to be used more in the new offense)," Forte said. "Coach Trestman I think he said he watched a lot of film on me and has seen me run different routes. So we'll get back to catching the ball out of the backfield like we did the prior years." Forte also mentioned that he'll be split out wide in certain packages this year. Forte averaged 56 in his first 4 NFL seasons. Expect him to be back around that mark in 2013.

Chicago Bears FB Evan Rodriguez worked exclusively at fullback during the team's minicamp this week. Tight end coach Andy Bischoff said the team could use Rodriguez in a hybrid role next season.

The Chicago Sun-Times pegs Bears RB Matt Forte as the likely top beneficiary of HC Marc Trestman's arrival. When Trestman took over the CFL's Montreal Alouettes in 2008, RB receptions jumped from 45 to 104. Forte has ranked among the most productive receiving backs in the league since he arrived. And Trestman has already lauded all aspects of his game: "Matt has the entire scope and ability to be able to run all different kinds of runs with him, and you can make all the different kinds of throws to him. And he’s a willing blocker, which is critically important." Forte shouldn't make it out of the 1st 18 picks in any 2013 fantasy football draft.

New Bears HC Marc Trestman might be ready to increase RB Matt Forte's role beyond what it was last year. "He has a skill set that goes the whole spectrum of what you want in a running back," Trestman told the Chicago Tribune. The passing game provides the most obvious room for growth. Forte's 44 catches last year marked the lowest total in his 5 seasons. Of course, the Bears also signed free-agent TE Martellus Bennett. Michael C. Wright of ESPNChicago.com has been told by a league source that Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall needs arthroscopic hip surgery. This will be Marshall's fourth hip surgery since March 2009. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The amount of issues with Marshall's hip is disconcerting, but he was one of the best players in football this season and won't be slowed for OTAs following a short recovery period. Other less tenured coaches, like Pat Shurmur and Chan Gailey, also failed to avoid the axe.
In an instant gratification society where it’s all about what you’ve done for me lately, sour seasons, especially over consecutive years, are intolerable in the NFL. With every overthrown pass, every botched snap, impatient fanbases grow increasingly hungry for Ws, desperate to watch their heros kiss the Lombardi Trophy.
Fantasy owners, particularly those in keeper leagues, are wired similarly. If

So there may not be a worse time to draft a 2013 fantasy league than today, before the final week of the 2012 regular season has even kicked off. We still have dozens of injuries ahead, plus the usual off-season player movement and coaching changes. And then there's April's NFL Draft.
Thus, we begin this feature with an important warning: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
It's fine for me to conduct a one-man 2013 mock in 2012, of course, because I'm a fully licensed fantasy professional. Ordinary citizens shouldn't think about drafting a league for another seven or eight months, however. Today's exercise is simply a guessing game, based on an incomplete picture of the league. It's theoretical fantasy football. But

Matt Forte returned to Thursday's practice as a limited participant. The former Tulane star was able to play last week on his bad ankle, gaining a total of 95 yards and scoring one TD, although his 13 total touches were his lowest total since Week 2.
Forte is listed as questionable for Week 17 and has re-aggravated this same injury numerous times. Barring a setback though, he is on track to play and Chicago will need as their playoff aspirations are not yet extinguished. In a year where quarterbacks were consistently front page news, most rushing attacks took a back seat, further damaging the position's once sterling reputation. Though new points sources emerged (e.g. Alfred Morris, Doug Martin and Trent Richardson) and Adrian Peterson, less than a year from major reconstructive knee surgery, posted the greatest single season, regardless of position, in NFL history, RBs collectively suffered yet again. Just 12 rushers averaged 12.0 fantasy points or better, down from 16 in 2012 and 17 in 2011. Suffice it to say, with certified workhorses the lone exception, RB remains a position in transition.
