In an ultra-fast game where violent collisions are commonplace, catastrophe is just off-tackle. Bone breaks, tendon tears and hamstring pulls are sometimes predictable, though those who fall victim to them often times are not.
Unless that player happens to be Ryan Mathews.
Placed on a pedestal by several fantasy pundits, including yours truly, last summer, San Diego's delicate flower had the outward appearance of a rusher on the brink of a breakout. Widely reported by writers walking the Chargers beat, he had a tremendous offseason, was in line to shoulder a three-down workload and was for all intents and purposes the centerpiece in a Norv Turner offense that helped elevate LaDainian

The Falcons believe 4th-round rookie TE Levine Toilolo can be a weapon inside the red zone. “Obviously, his efficiency in the redzone is well documented,” HC Mike Smith. “To throw the ball to a guy in the red zone, you want to make sure he’s going to catch the ball. I think that kind of says what kind of hands he has.” 10 of Toilolo's 50 career catches at Stanford went for scores. At 6'8, he's the tallest TE in the NFL. Toilolo is considered a block-first TE, though. And with Tony Gonzalez still hanging around, he won't be a fantasy option in 2013. Dynasty leagues with an open roster spot can stash him as we wait to see if he can develop into Gonzo's heir apparent.

The Falcons will cut RB Michael Turner, DE John Abraham and CB Dunta Robinson today to create $15.9 million in cap space. None of the moves is surprising. The Turner release had been previously reported. Rumors had surfaced of the same for Abraham and Robinson. Turner's performance and position come nowhere close to matching what his 2013 salary would have been. Robinson is a solid corner but not special. He was in the middle of a 6-year, $57 million deal signed in 2010. Abraham remains the most effective of the 3, but he'll turn 35 in May and doesn't play every down. The Falcons might look to bring him back, just as they did after he hit unrestricted free agency last spring. Abraham took less money to return then than he could have

You should know the Shuffle Up rules by now, but we'll do a quick refresher. What's happened to this point is merely an audition; we're trying to rank the players based on how they'll play for the balance of the season. Consider basic Yahoo! scoring categories as we do this dance: wins, shutouts, save percentage and goals-against average. There are also contextual factors to consider, of course (supporting cast, job security), not to mention age and career arc and injury concerns.
Injured goalies are kept off the list, which is why Miikka Kiprusoff isn't here. (The way he's been playing, no big loss. We don't miss you, Kiprusoft.)

NFL free agents will be able to sign wherever they want two weeks from today. Until then, all we've got is speculation as to where these players will next call home. And we've got some matching speculation from Rams beat writer Jim Thomas and Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole. Both of them wrote Tuesday that the Atlanta Falcons are one of the most -- if not the most -- likely landing spots for Rams running back Steven Jackson. Thomas reported Monday that Jackson will become a free agent by voiding the final year on his current contract. The Falcons will have an opening for a bulky veteran back as they are expected to cut Michael Turner soon. "He can handle all three downs and he does a very good job for us returning kicks." This isn't the first time the boss has endorsed 'Quizz as a 3-down back. But actions speak louder than words. And most Falcons insiders believe the team will add a bigger back this offseason to share the workload with Rodgers. The latest rumor has Atlanta interested in free agent Shonn Greene.
