The Lions signed free-agent DT Jason Jones today and re-signed starting CB Chris Houston. Jones entered the league with the Titans back when Lions HC Jim Schwartz led the defense there. Jones saw his most productive days as a DT there before the staff played him at DE too much in his final couple of Tennessee seasons. Jones spent 2012 with the Seahawks, where injuries kept him from contributing much. Jones brings strong interior pass-rush skills and figures to spell starters Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Houston is a decent corner: not special in coverage or fantasy terms but also not terrible in either arena. Detroit can return to decent fantasy defense status by improving the rest of its secondary and adding a pass rusher.

Now if someone with a reputation for dirty play--say James Harrison or Ndamukong Suh-- had done the same thing, no question there would be a fine. But quarterbacks get the benefit of the doubt, and no quarterback is more of a golden boy than Brady. In fact, don't be surprised if the league makes Reed apologize for being in the way.

Bears QB Jay Cutler took a huge hit from Lions DT Ndamukong Suh in the 2nd quarter of Monday night's game.  He was down for a couple minutes.  Cutler returned after just 1 play but headed to the locker room with about a minute left in the half.  X-rays came back negative, and Cutler gutted out the 2nd half.  He confirmed afterwards that he's dealing with bruised ribs.  It should be an injury he can play through, but it'll be something to monitor considering the pounding he tends to take.

Both Jeremy Mincey and Matt Shaughnessy have terrific matchups as the Jaguars and Raiders face off in Oakland this week. Both have had their ups and downs in their careers but we should put them in the lineup this week.

When playing, Shaughnessy has proven to be a DL1 option and we should expect that production going forward.

Mincey on the other hand, had a disappointing day against the Bears, but the Jaguars fell behind early and it put the Bears in a situation to run more high percentage plays, and unfortunately Mincey didn’t get it done in tackles. That can happen even to the best defensive linemen so consider it just a bad day and get him in the lineup

This continues to be a frustrating season for defensive linemen that were considered elite on draft day. Over the years it’s been sound advice to go after one of the top options at this position as your first IDP selection because of the inconsistency at the position overall.

Grab a Jared Allen, Jason Pierre-Paul or Trent Cole and usually that means a no brainier to start weekly. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case in 2012.

Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh was not impressed by comments made from an anonymous general manager who said that he is overrated. 'True men (go on the record),' Suh said. 'I don't know who he is. I couldn't tell you if he's one.' Suh, however, acknowledged that he has not been great so far this season. 'Personally, I believe I had an average quarter,' Suh said. 'I had some good things. Some not okay things, but it's a work in progress. It's early in the year. Still have a lot of time to play at a high level and stay consistent. We knew coming into the season the Titans were projected to be thin on the depth chart behind Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley at defensive end. Both are off to good starts this season and with the Titans defense on the field with regularity, we should look to them as weekly starters.

Both defensive ends were interesting stories coming into this season, but Morgan was the player whom I watched closely in the preseason. Week one, Morgan didn’t look great but came away with a sack against the Seahawks. That said, his intensity off the ball was much better against the Buccaneers and Cardinals.

Ahh the life of defensive lineman in the world of IDP fantasy football. Draft a top lineman like Jared Allen, expect big things, and get nothing to show for it opening weekend. Allen wasn’t he only top lineman on draft day with a disappointing week one, and we can bet many of them will turn things around this weekend.

Inconsistency is always a problem for this position but we have a few rookies that stood out last week. One is Chandler Jones of New England and another is Derek Wolfe from the Denver Broncos.

The smell of football is in the air. Here are my 2012 Week 1 fantasy football kicker rankings.

1. Philadelphia Eagles
Last year they had crazy expectations and were slow out of the gate. They should be more equipped to handle the expectations this year, and getting Cleveland as a first draw should help.

2. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks do have a very good underrated defense, but this is as much an indictment of Arizona’s offense. Until they solve their QB and offensive line woes it will be a feast for opposing defenses.

3. Houston Texans
I don’t think last year was a fluke. They did it without Mario Williams for the most part, so I’m confident

Talk about a great kickoff weekend for defensive linemen as many of the top-flight studs have favorable matchups. To get the party started we have Jason Pierre-Paul, Just Tuck and Osi Umenyiora will face off against a Cowboys offensive line that has serious continuity issues.

Not good for Tony Romo, and even if the veteran quarterback is precise with his pre-snap reads it’s likely he will have a few busted plays and these lineman will re-introduce him to the Giants home field, literally.

Speaking of MetLife Stadium, the Jets will also host a home game this weekend as Mario Williams and the Bills imposing front four come to town. Look for Williams and Mark Anderson to harass Mark Sanchez as the Jets right tackle

Calvin Johnson's combination of size, speed, strength, leaping ability and sure-handedness is unrivaled at his position. He's the league's most dominant receiver by a wide margin. Johnson not only finished as the top-scoring fantasy wideout last season, but he beat the No. 2 (Jordy Nelson) by 46.9 standard fantasy points. Training camps are open, preseason games are around the corner and fantasy owners should be shaping up their cheat sheets. And while many fantasy owners are worried about ranking the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, defenses should not be forgotten.

Just a couple of days ago, Brett Myers was a man at the front of a bullpen and Francisco Cordero was a reliever no one wanted.

Two days and two swaps later, Myers is out of a gig — and Cordero all of a sudden has value again.

As first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Astros shipped Myers (and facial hair) to Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The White Sox also receive cash considerations. Houston picks up two minor-league pitchers (right-hander Matt Heidenreich and left-hander Blair Walters) and a player to be named later.

2012 Fantasy Football Team Defense Rankings

Here’s an updated and expanded look at the LestersLegends 2012 team defense rankings.

1. San Francisco 49ers

The Niners had the No. 2 scoring defense (14.3 ppg) and the No. 2 total defense (308.2 ypg). Harbaugh has them playing tough-nosed football, and they have the benefit of playing in a weak division.

 

2. Pittsburgh Steelers

Year in and year out, the Steelers are among the NFL’s top defenses. They were No. 1 in scoring (14.2 ppg) and total defense (271.8 ypg) last year. They play in a tougher division so I’ll give the Niners the nod, but it’s close.

Lions | Expect Ndamukong Suh to take next step

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said he expects DL Ndamukong Suh and the defense to take the next step this season. Suh posted just 36 tackles and four sacks in 14 games last season. 'What we've done this spring, I cut up all the plays - every snap he had (in 2011) - and I showed him,' Cunningham said. 'I said, 'Now you tell me what happens during a game.' In college, you have 85 to 90 plays, but in the NFL you have 60 to 65, so you can't relax on a play here and there and then start looking for the plays, looking for the shots - hitting the quarterback for a sack. He finally realized that when I showed him the tape.'

Last year Jabaal Sheard broke onto the scene and put together an unexpected DL2 performance for IDP fantasy owners. Could Andre Branch be the second coming?

Only time will tell, but it appears he will earn a three down role right away, and while he probably won’t play the same high snap count we saw from Sheard, his prospects of a breakout rookie year are encouraging.

With emerging star Jeremy Mincey playing opposite bookend, expect opposing offenses to focus on the veteran is the first option for double teams and chips.

Branch was one of the better pass rushers in college last year, and while I don’t expect him to reach double digits, he was brought into Jacksonville

Huddle Up: What is up with the Lions and their off-field issues? On the field they're coming off their best season in 16 years -- but it's like they want to be the new Cincinnati Bengals off the field. Fairley and Mikel Leshoure have each been arrested twice, Ndamukong Suh is driving his car like a wild banshee, and Titus Young allegedly sucker-punched Louis Delmas at the team facility.
