In every corner of the sports universe hard-to-explain anomalies push the boundaries of flukiness, crazy events that leave eyewitnesses with jaws dropped.
Fantasy football is no exception.
From Jerome Harrison’s trampling of Kansas City Week 14 2009 to Billy Volek’s unforgettable two-game stretch with the Titans in 2004 to an entire offseason week where neither Kenny Britt or Titus Young are incarcerated, unforeseen occurrences happen all the time, changing previously conceived notions about a particular player or team.
Take Detroit’s Matthew Stafford.
Last year, the former No. 1 pick was the definition of

When Mr. Irrelevant, South Carolina tight end Justice Cunningham, had his name called in front of a small group of reasonably sauced lingerers at last month’s NFL Draft, Fantasyland’s finest quickly began formulating thoughts and assembling cheat sheets for this year’s fake football drafts.

Over the next several weeks, armchair quarterbacks of various backgrounds will hone their draft skills in preparation for main events come August. During these exercises, participants will tinker with new strategies, rack their brains over complicated backfields and shout out expletives when desired players are pilfered just before their pick, all the while proclaiming

The San Diego Chargers were tied with the Detroit Lions for the fewest rushes (4) of 20 yards or more in 2012. They were one of two teams to average less than 2.0 yards (1.9) before contact per rush (Steelers 1.7).
Our View: Part of these woes are on the running backs (
Ryan Mathews, etc) and part of this problem is on the offensive line. The team upgraded the O-Line when they added RT D.J. Fluker in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft. We'll see if
Mathews can stay healthy and produce better numbers this season in what is a make or break year for him.

I can tell you from the outside -- from someone from a different team [the Colts] -- we liked Ryan Mathews a lot. We thought when we played San Diego, he was someone we had to stop. Bernard had a hard upbringing as his mom passed away when he was a kid and he even lived with another family for a time, while his Dad went off to look for work.

Owners who invested an exorbitant pick in china doll Darren McFadden last year are still sorely regretting it. Chucking hard inflatable balls at his dome, Mike Rice-style, would be an acceptable form of cathartic release.
When not sidelined for the 10 millionth time with a lower body ailment (last year a high-ankle sprain), the disappointing rusher appeared overly timid, lacked explosiveness and was generally terrible, an ill-fit for Greg Knapp’s zone-blocking scheme. Shockingly 82 of his 216 rushing attempts (37.9 percent) went for one, zero or negative yards. His overall yards per carry average (3.3) was the lowest of his career, by a wide margin. According to

The Chargers added to their stable of running backs on Friday by re-signing Ronnie Brown. This comes on the heels of their acquisition of Danny Woodhead. Like Woodhead, Brown was used mostly on third downs last season. He had just 46 carries, but he had 49 receptions and gained 591 yards from scrimmage. FANTASY ANALYSIS: When
Ryan Mathews drafted in 2010, the Chargers saw him as a true three-down back. And he had the skills to be such a player.
Mathews was well built at six foot, 225 pounds; he could run inside and outside, and could catch very well. Three years, numerous injuries and many crushing fumbles later, it's clear that the Chargers want to see no part of him on third downs. With the inclusion of Brown and Woodhead,

One of the game's better third-down backs is switching coasts. Former Patriots running back Danny Woodhead signed with the Chargers on Friday. Woodhead caught 40 passes last season and has averaged 4.8 yards per carry throughout his career. He is 28 years old. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Although Woodhead will remain PPR-worthy in San Diego, this move hurts
Ryan Mathews' fantasy value more than helps Woodhead's.
Mathews just hasn't been able to stay healthy, and the Chargers will probably look to Woodhead to be their near-exclusive third-down back.

The Chargers have signed RB Danny Woodhead to a 2-year deal. The 5'8, 195-pounder is just a change-of-pace guy on the ground, but he's a top-notch receiver out of the backfield. Woodhead has racked up 92 catches over the past 3 seasons in New England. He'll likely step into a similar role with the Bolts. If Woodhead is the only RB San Diego brings in this offseason, it'll be good news for RB Ryan Mathews. Meanwhile, the Pats are left with Shane Vereen and Leon Washington behind Stevan Ridley. Our money is on Vereen capturing the pass-catching role, which would put him squarely on the fantasy radar in PPR leagues.

The skill of a fantasy team is scoring points, ostensibly so you can make the playoffs. The long run tells the fairest story. The short run, what happens to you in the playoffs, is the biggest luck of

For the majority of fantasy leagues, this is the day a champion is crowned. For those of you vying for the pinnacle, you know what's at stake. Bragging rights, pride ... maybe something more tangible. You know what to do. Stay the course. Go with the guys who brought you here. Stay calm. As like every week, make the educated decisions and trust them. Good luck.
Anyway, let's get to the early game injury concerns. A bunch of guys are dinged up, but Jonathan Stewart, Alex Green and Kendall Wright seem to be at most risk of missing today's action. Not exactly marquee names, but we'll make sure to cover all of the active/inactive news in today's early games to get you set for championship week.
Players who have already been ruled out for Week

Normally we give you an Injury Wrap in this space on Fridays, and we will get to plenty of injuries after the jump. But with less in-flux injury news than usual this week, and a few non-injury situations worth discussing, we're broadening the scope of today's piece. Good luck to everyone in their playoff games.
I've enjoyed the Danario Alexander run as much as anyone. I picked him up where I could, started him aggressively, blogged about him constantly. Until the Week 15 bagel, it was a fun and rewarding ride.
But in Week 16, a one-game season, there's no time for sentimentality and future speculation. If you don't like someone's chances at points this weekend, you cut the cord. And with

Week 15 Injury Analysis is up and there’s not a lot of new injuries to discuss so I’m going to make this a “Reader’s Suggestion Issue” in which I’m going to let anyone make a comment regarding what player’s they would like updates on and I will be given quick responses so that you can hopefully use the information to take down the crown in our league.
There is just one player that I would like to discuss since I am from San Diego and it has been a rough past few years being a Chargers fan especially when the ownership decided in the last offseason that staying with Status Quo was the answer…..that didn’t seem to work out too well.
Ryan Mathews: In last week’s game, Mathews was forced.....

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner didn't reveal his plans at
running back in Week 16 after RB
Ryan Mathews (clavicle) was placed
on the Injured Reserve. 'Well, we've got a chance to get Ronnie
Brown back' Turner said. 'Jackie Battle will get a chance to play.
And Brink (Curtis Brinkley ) played some yesterday, though I don't
know that he would play on third down. And we'll probably add Edwin
Baker to the 53-man roster. I don't know that he would be active,
but we'd have to see where Ronnie Brown is.' Brown was able to
practice on a limited basis Wednesday.
Huddle Up: Mathews' fantasy owners or those desperate enough to be eyeing a
Chargers' back in Week 16 will have to play the waiting game and see

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 19.
Our View: The team could use Brown back on the field this week. Starting RB
Ryan Mathews (clavicle) has been lost for the season. Brown could play as the receiving back in a RBBC with Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley.

San Diego Chargers RB
Ryan Mathews (clavicle) underwent surgery on his left clavicle Monday, Dec. 17, and he is expected to be recovered in plenty of time to take part in the team's voluntary workouts in April. 'If you were to ask me four months ago, 'Do you think he's going to break his left clavicle?' I would have said he's more likely to be struck by lightning,' Dr. Daniel Kharrazi said.
Mathews broke his right clavicle in the preseason. Kharrazi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Mathews' shoulders, and he expects the clavicle to heal at full strength. Kharrazi also said he does not expect
Mathews to break either of his clavicles in the future.
Our View:
Mathews durability is a big issue. Fantasy owners drafted him in the

Heading into Super Bowl showdowns for many fantasy leagues it’s probably not a good time to say this is the weakest week for waiver options throughout the entire season, but that’s exactly what we have. Outside of an opportunity opening up in San Diego because of anther collarbone injury to Ryan Mathews, there’s really nothing to discuss at running back if this is your final week of action.
Our best chances for help come from defense and possibly rookie receiver Rod Streater as the Raiders figure to play from behind in Carolina.

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said RB Jackie Battle will get a chance to play in Week 16, and appeared to favor him over RB Curtis Brinkley.
Huddle Up: With Ryan Mathews out the Chargers will use a committee approach at the running back position. Battle has handled goal line work before, and it sounds like he'll be the lead dog in the Bolts' RBBC this week as well against the Jets.

Just how rare were Chargers RB Ryan Mathews' pair of collarbone injuries over a 4-month span? “If you look at shoulder injuries in football, clavicular fractures are generally low-incident injuries,” Dr. Daniel Kharazzi told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “And this guy’s had two of them in four months. That’s why I think people are alarmed. People realize this is generally a rare injury…If you were to ask me four months ago, ‘Do you think he’s going to break his left clavicle?’ I would have said he’s more likely to be struck by lightning.” Kharazzi added that Mathews isn't more likely to injure either collarbone again than he was before. And then this: "I don't think Ryan Mathews, because of the two specific
