Patriots RB Shane Vereen is in line to pick up the Danny Woodhead (Chargers) role on the offense. They added LeGarrette Blount and Leon Washington this offseason, but replacing Woodhead's role in the passing game and on third down may be Vereen's job to lose.
Our View: Blount is more of a banger like
Stevan Ridley or Brandon Bolden. Washington could fill that change of pace role but will likely have his plate full with his special teams responsibilities. Vereen flashed big time ability last year and will get more time to do that again in 2013.

Arm surgery, partying, infection, partying, rehab, partying – it’s been an offseason filled with anesthesia and booze for Rob Gronkowski.
With recent reports about the former Pro Bowler’s recovery from a broken forearm ranging from glowingly optimistic to frustratingly somber, pinpointing exactly what the tight end is worth has been an exercise in futility. New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount agreed to restructure his contract when joining the team via trade last month. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers back agreed to cut $1.07 million from his base salary. Blount only appeared on 92 offensive snaps last season, limiting him to just 41 carries for 151 yards and two scores. Blount is currently third, or possibly fourth, on the depth chart behind
Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and possibly Leon Washington. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The Pats have a number of capable runners. Blount's immediate impact is unclear though. He figures to be a short-yardage back and may poach the occasional goal-line opportunity. The Pats also have Brandon Bolden on the roster at a very cheap rate and he proved to

We felt like he was a talented guy that we wanted to have on our team,' Belichick said.
Huddle Up: While Belichick and the Pats are pleased with Blount's addition, it only spells further headaches for fantasy GMs trying to get a read on the Pats' backfield situation. But in a good way.
In a tweet from the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe: quot;
Stevan Ridley looked like a house today. He's added a noticeable amount of muscle. Might be even more difficult to tackle in 2013."
Ridley played last season at 225 pounds. It is not known exactly how much muscle he has packed on.
Ridley rushed for 1,263 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: These kinds of stories are easy talking points, but the actual value is always overrated. Some players lose weight to gain more agility and then if the following season is a failure, they complain about how the weight loss caused them to wear down quickly. Then players, such as Ridley, put on the pounds in an effort to become more durable and tougher to bring

Patriots RB may have difficult time making the rosterWith the NFL draft now over, let's reset the Patriots roster with a projected depth chart at each position. Depth charts are always fluid, and we expect these to change in the coming weeks and months as we learn more about the additions to the roster and their roles. Quick hit: An area of depth got deeper with the addition of
LeGarrette Blount. He's a niche player -- not an every-down back -- and the Patriots have a nice stable of talent in the backfield. (

The Patriots acquired RB LeGarrette Blount from the Bucs in exchange for RB Jeff Demps and a 7th-round pick. Blount went for 1,000 yards on a 5.0 per-carry average back in his 2010 rookie campaign. But he's fallen out of favor since, and carried just 41 times for 151 yards this past year. New England seems pretty set at RB with Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen. You can never be completely sure with Bill Belichick, though. We'll keep an eye on Blount this summer, but he's unlikely to be a fantasy factor.

Another player-for-player trade has been made official during the draft. It contains players who most likely would have been cut if no trade had been worked out, but here it is: The Patriots sent a seventh-round pick in this draft and running back Jeff Demps to the Buccaneers for running back LeGarrette Blount. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The fantasy values here are close to nil. Demps, a silver medalist in the 2012 Olympics, wants to play football, but he has made it clear that he is first concentrated on running track. If he gets on the football field, he could be a gimmick player for the Bucs, but there's no guarantee that he'll ever see playing time. Tampa Bay needs to get a better backup behind Doug Martin.
Same goes for Blount. He looked great

One of the game's better third-down backs is switching coasts. Former Patriots running back Danny Woodhead signed with the Chargers on Friday. ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss was the first to report the deal, and a source tells him that Woodhead was given a two-year contract. Woodhead caught 40 passes last season and has averaged 4.8 yards per carry throughout his career. He is 28 years old. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Although Woodhead will remain PPR-worthy in San Diego, this move hurts Ryan Mathews' fantasy value more than helps Woodhead's. Mathews just hasn't been able to stay healthy, and the Chargers will probably look to Woodhead to be their near-exclusive third-down back. Mathews didn't get a whole lot of work on third downs anyway last season, but

The Chargers have signed RB Danny Woodhead to a 2-year deal. The 5'8, 195-pounder is just a change-of-pace guy on the ground, but he's a top-notch receiver out of the backfield. Woodhead has racked up 92 catches over the past 3 seasons in New England. He'll likely step into a similar role with the Bolts. If Woodhead is the only RB San Diego brings in this offseason, it'll be good news for RB Ryan Mathews. Meanwhile, the Pats are left with Shane Vereen and Leon Washington behind Stevan Ridley. Our money is on Vereen capturing the pass-catching role, which would put him squarely on the fantasy radar in PPR leagues.

Washington might also work his way into a pass-catching role on offense. He wasn't used much on offense in Seattle but he had a 47-catch season with the Jets back in 2008. The Patriots haven't shown any interest in bringing back Danny Woodhead, leaving Washington and Shane Vereen behind Stevan Ridley. We'll keep an eye on New England's backfield this summer.

The Patriots ranked 25th in kick return average last season. Leon Washington, one of the game's best kick returners, was a free agent. Sounds like a match to me, and on Thursday, the two sides came to an agreement on a one-year deal. Washington, who will turn 31 in August, averaged 29 yards per kick return last season, the second-best mark in the league. The Patriots averaged 21.2 yards as a team. FANTASY ANALYSIS: Obviously, the move fills a need for the Pats. However, unless you in a return-yardage league, Washington has zero fantasy value. His days of being an effective change-of-pace running back are all but over. He got just 23 carries last year with the Seahawks, and even if the Patriots don't re-sign Danny Woodhead, they have Stevan

The NFL Playoffs are now set after 17 grueling weeks of play! There are a ton of story lines to follow. Among the more intriguing are three rookie quarterbacks, one of whom is guaranteed to win a playoff game in their first year; a second year quarterback who took over in week ten; a Colt’s team who went from worst last year to a playoff team this year, riding an emotional high after the return of their head coach from a successful bout against leukemia; and a team that went from the favorite for a first round bye to the number three seed in a few short weeks.
These are the overall rankings for the playoffs. Some formats require you to choose from all the teams in the playoffs, others allow you to go week to week. These

So there may not be a worse time to draft a 2013 fantasy league than today, before the final week of the 2012 regular season has even kicked off. We still have dozens of injuries ahead, plus the usual off-season player movement and coaching changes. And then there's April's NFL Draft.
Thus, we begin this feature with an important warning: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
It's fine for me to conduct a one-man 2013 mock in 2012, of course, because I'm a fully licensed fantasy professional. Ordinary citizens shouldn't think about drafting a league for another seven or eight months, however. Today's exercise is simply a guessing game, based on an incomplete picture of the league. In a year where quarterbacks were consistently front page news, most rushing attacks took a back seat, further damaging the position's once sterling reputation. Though new points sources emerged (e.g. Alfred Morris, Doug Martin and Trent Richardson) and Adrian Peterson, less than a year from major reconstructive knee surgery, posted the greatest single season, regardless of position, in NFL history, RBs collectively suffered yet again. Just 12 rushers averaged 12.0 fantasy points or better, down from 16 in 2012 and 17 in 2011. Suffice it to say, with certified workhorses the lone exception, RB remains a position in transition. If you happened to draft Brandon Lloyd this past summer like I did, you’ve probably been shaking your head when watching the Patriots play on prime-time television the past two weeks as the veteran has looked like a Pro Bowl star. In that time Lloyd has been targeted a whopping 25-times, hauling in 17-receptions for 279-yards a score and even picking up a fumble recovery in the end zone for another touchdown.
Problem is, many of you didn’t have him in your lineup let alone on your team at this point, after Lloyd struggled throughout the season and was demoted out of two receiver sets against the Dolphins and Colts.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley has put the ball on the turf in each of the past 2 games. But former Pats RB Kevin Faulk doesn't believe that will impact his workload going forward. “The guy has been very productive," Faulk said. "No one is perfect. When you’re scouting a guy, you kind of know the types of things you’re going to have to deal with if he makes the team. If you check out Stevan’s running style, he’s an instinctive runner that does a lot of twisting and turning. Knowing the Patriots scouting department, they knew that. But I do think (the recent fumbling) has been addressed. Turnovers will kill you, and it showed Sunday night. Trust me, it’s a big deal to Belichick, but I’m not thinking (Ridley’s case) is as

Stevan Ridley has fumbled the football three times the past two games, officially losing two of those fumbles. It is not believed, however, the team has lost confidence in Ridley.

For all the success Doug Martin has had in his rookie season, fantasy owners had to be disappointed and a little shocked by his numbers against the Saints last week. Playing against one of the worst run defenses in the league, Martin appeared to be a shoe in for over 100-yards and at least one score, but the Saints built up a big lead in the first half, forcing the Buccaneers to stick with the passing game.
Don’t expect the same situation this week as Tampa Bay heads back home to play the Rams. Look for St. Louis to give them a competitive game, but the game scripts will play out the way we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from this team most of the year, and

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley has been money for fantasy owners this year. But he cost a lot of teams in Week 15. Ridley was bottled up by a tough 49ers defense, managing just 23 yards on 9 carries. After he lost a fumble early in the 3rd quarter, he touched the ball just once more the rest of the night. Ridley was on the field for just 19 of 96 offensive snaps, while RB Danny Woodhead played 76 and finished with 17 touches. Ridley's fumble almost certainly had something to do with his limited playing time. But New England also went with Woodhead because they were in catch-up mode all night. If you survived with Ridley this week, he's worth sticking with against the Jaguars this Sunday. Jacksonville ranks 30th in fantasy

Stevan Ridley only received one snap after fumbling the ball in the third quarter of the team's Week 15 game. The lack of snaps may have occurred because the team had to throw the ball to get back into the game.
