When Mr. Irrelevant, South Carolina tight end Justice Cunningham, had his name called in front of a small group of reasonably sauced lingerers at last month’s NFL Draft, Fantasyland’s finest quickly began formulating thoughts and assembling cheat sheets for this year’s fake football drafts.
Mock season officially kicked off …
Over the next several weeks, armchair quarterbacks of various backgrounds will hone their draft skills in preparation for main events come August. During these exercises, participants will tinker with new strategies, rack their brains over complicated backfields and shout out expletives when desired players are pilfered just before their pick, all the while proclaiming

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman said he is more disappointed in not winning than he is in not getting a new contract this offseason. 'It bothers me a lot, knowing the type of team we have and our capabilities, being close but not quite getting there," Freeman said. 'The only reason you play this game is you want to go out and win. You want to win championships and you want to walk away and have a handful of rings. That's why you play the game. The drive is there, the intensity is there. We've just got to find a way to put it all together."
Huddle Up: The Bucs are 24-32 in Freeman's 56 career starts with the QB posting one winning season (10-6 in 2010) so far. He is coming off a career year, though, with 4,065 yards

Huddle Up: While Jackson was hitting career highs with 72 catches and 1,384 yards this past season in Tampa, QB Philip Rivers failed to throw for 4,000 yards for the first time since 2007 and clearly missed V-Jax's big-play skills.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shopping WR Arrelious Benn. Benn was a second-round pick in 2010.
Huddle Up: The Bucs are flush at wideout with Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams so Benn is superfluous, though with quality wideouts available both in the draft and via free agency there won't be a particularly strong market. That said, there are WR-needy teams who might be willing to throw a late-round pick at the Bucs for a shot at working with Benn; that's better for Tampa Bay than getting nothing if they were to release Benn outright.

Yahoo's Jason Cole hears the Vikings believe WR Percy Harvin could elect to hold out for the first 10 games of this coming season if he doesn't get a new contract. That'd allow him to make his point but still accrue an official year of service and hit unrestricted free agency next offseason. It's the same move Vincent Jackson pulled as a Charger back in 2010. Harvin is reportedly looking a contract closer in value to what Calvin Johnson got ($16.5 million per year) than Dwayne Bowe ($11 million). As special as Harvin is, that's a lot of coin to cough up to a headcase with a sketchy medical history. Those demands will also make it tough for Minnesota to trade him. It's obviously early in the offseason, but there seems to be a

"They said they definitely believe in Josh, that he is their guy, that they want to reach their goals with him and that they know he is capable of doing the job and are committed to him." Freeman is entering the final season of a five year contract.

Huddle Up: Williams is the No. 2 man now in Tampa with Vincent Jackson's arrival last offseason, but that also helped Williams bump up his production last season. Williams actually had 2 fewer catches than he did in 2011 (63-65), but he averaged nearly 4 more yards per reception (15.8-11.9) and tripled his TD production (9-3).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams may look to Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson's five-year, $36 million deal as a benchmark as he discusses a contract extension with the team this offseason. Seattle Seahawks WR Sidney Rice signed a five-year, $41 million deal in 2011 that had more than $18 million in guaranteed money.
Huddle Up: Right now Williams is the WR2 in Tampa Bay after the Bucs spent big on Vincent Jackson last offseason. Considering they have an outstanding young running back and a question mark at quarterback, spending big on another wideout doesn't make a ton of sense. So if Williams is looking for Johnson or Rice money, he may have to leave Tampa to find it.

Huddle Up: Clark wasn't much of a factor early in the season but acclimated himself to the Tampa Bay offense later on. He can provide a nice over-the-middle option for the Bucs while Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams work the outsides and down the field; now the Bucs just need to figure out if Josh Freeman is their long-term solution at quarterback.

So there may not be a worse time to draft a 2013 fantasy league than today, before the final week of the 2012 regular season has even kicked off. We still have dozens of injuries ahead, plus the usual off-season player movement and coaching changes. And then there's April's NFL Draft.
Thus, we begin this feature with an important warning: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
It's fine for me to conduct a one-man 2013 mock in 2012, of course, because I'm a fully licensed fantasy professional. Ordinary citizens shouldn't think about drafting a league for another seven or eight months, however. Today's exercise is simply a guessing game, based on an incomplete picture of the league. It's theoretical fantasy football. But

Many offensive coordinators had their head in the clouds again this season, evident in the pass-first mentality most teams portrayed. As a result, pass catchers, unsurprisingly identical to quarterbacks, experienced unprecedented fantasy success. In total, 19 wide receivers averaged at least 10.0 points per game in standard formats, up one from last year and four more than five years ago. The usual suspects dotted the landscape, but several newcomers (e.g. Randall Cobb and Eric Decker) made their mark as well. If you happened to draft Brandon Lloyd this past summer like I did, you’ve probably been shaking your head when watching the Patriots play on prime-time television the past two weeks as the veteran has looked like a Pro Bowl star. In that time Lloyd has been targeted a whopping 25-times, hauling in 17-receptions for 279-yards a score and even picking up a fumble recovery in the end zone for another touchdown.
Problem is, many of you didn’t have him in your lineup let alone on your team at this point, after Lloyd struggled throughout the season and was demoted out of two receiver sets against the Dolphins and Colts.

While many have made the case for Michael Crabtree being a first round bust, it appears the 4th year receiver is starting to come into his own. Early signs in the off-season suggested this could be a breakout year for Crabtree, if for no other reason than he finally overcame his problematic foot issues.
For the first-time Crabtree actually played in a preseason game this August, and thankfully his foot ailments appear to be a thing of the past.
The best thing that ever happened for Crabtree was Alex Smith’s demotion in the middle of the season. It’s not that Crabtree and Smith weren’t having success together, but more that Colin Kaepernick has the

I was knocked out of my highest priority league last week because I made the wrong choice at QB between Andrew Luck and Colin Kaepernick. It was the second week in a row that I made the wrong choice, and it was the umpteenth reminder that I really hate not having one franchise QB that I simply never have to think about benching — there's maybe 6-7 of them, with Luck just missing that elite cut. At any rate, I still have a couple other dogs in the hunt among all my leagues, but as I pointed out with the Luck/Kaepernick example, one wrong move can provide a swift ending to the '12 season. Two of those games came against the Eagles and in the second game Bryant abused the Eagles secondary after the catch, physically running over and past them for two impressive scores.

The Broncos threw us a curveball on Sunday as we found out Knowshon Moreno, not rookie Ronnie Hillman would be the starter against Kansas City. Talk throughout the week made it seem that Denver would use a three back committee with Moreno, Hillman and Lance Ball but that strategy proved to be false when you look at the snap count distribution throughout the game.
Hillman played all of seven snaps, Ball only one as Moreno saw a feature back work load with 55 snaps,

Vincent Jackson is one of just seven receivers (with 35 or more targets) that has yet to drop a pass. He has been targeted 89 times and has 47 receptions.

A pair of Detroit receivers went over the century mark on Thanksgiving as Calvin Johnson turned in another dominant performance and rookie Ryan Broyles filled in nicely for Titus Young, who was serving a one-game suspension.
While Johnson is back to his old self over the past month, we shouldn’t discount Broyles odds of maintaining WR3 status down the stretch. The rookie will be a big part of what the Lions will do on offense in the future, but the question is, can Matthew Stafford play more like he did against the Texans or will he regress back to his poor play he’s shown us for most of the season?
If Stafford is ready to perform like the quarterback we saw

With Willis McGahee done for the remainder of the regular season, rookie Ronnie Hillman will receive the opportunity many fantasy owners have been waiting for since he was drafted in the spring. Hillman worked his way into the prime backup job to McGahee over a month ago, now he has the starting job but expect Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno to see some time on the field this week.
Only time will tell if Hillman can hold onto the job, but the Broncos clearly drafted him with the intention of being the replacement for McGahee in the future.
In a friendly matchup against the Chiefs, my hope is that Broncos are going to look at this game and the rest of the season as

For the last decade or so, Michael Salfino and Scott Pianowski have been putting together an email exchange centered around (but not limited to) the NFL. You might enjoy listening to them haggle. You might prefer a swift kick into the stomach. The Table isn't for everyone; we hope some of you enjoy it.

The goal for any NFL scribe is not to get too jazzed over an isolated result, but there was plenty of overreaction fodder from Week 11. The Texans, Falcons and Cowboys all tried to hand away games, but the Jaguars, Cardinals and Browns handed them back. Robert

As the biggest favorites in a game so far this season, it was more than a little surprising to see the Texans down 34-20 in the fourth quarter to a Jaguars team that has won once this year. I would say it was even crazier since the underdog lost its starting quarterback early on, but it's Blaine Gabbert, and Chad Henne impressed…Rashad Jennings has obviously been a huge disappointment since taking over for Maurice Jones-Drew, but there were plenty of fantasy owners still counting on at least some production in deep leagues, so a heads up about his benching sure would have been nice. "Winning" the FAAB bid on Jennings has proven to be anything but…Go ahead

Fantasy owners with Andre Johnson were waiting for an explosive game from the veteran and they finally got it against the Jaguars. Johnson put the game away with a 48-yard touchdown to seal the game in over time helping him finish with 14 receptions for 273 yards and the big score.
With top corner back Jonathan Joseph questionable for this week, the Lions will have respectable odds of forcing the Texans into another high-scoring game on Thanksgiving. Look to Johnson as a must start WR1 going forward.
