Anthony Johnson Fires Back at ‘Fake’ Alistair OvereemThe reaction most Blackzilians gave when Alistair Overeem left their squad earlier this year was fairly unanimous – Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya! Nobody has been more outspoken about Overeem’s departure than Anthony Johnson (pictured). “Rumble” accused Overeem of not buying into the “team” concept and only caring about himself. Recently, Johnson accused the heavyweight of injuring his training partners ”accidentally on purpose” after he hurt light heavyweight champ Jon Jones in practice at Jackson-Wink MMA, Overeem’s new team. Overeem responded by telling MMAJunkie that Johnson was “jealous” of him. The heavyweight added that it was a “p***y” move by Johnson to air their dirty laundry in the media instead of discussing it face-to-face. Johnson countered with a good laugh. “That’s the cutest thing I’ve heard all day,” Johnson wrote on Twitter Tuesday in response to Overeem’s remarks. “He can be fake all he wants that’s on him. Seeing him woul
Anthony Pettis Scores Cover of Wheaties BoxFrom a professional fighting standpoint, 2014 has been one to forget for UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. From a marketing standpoint, “Showtime” couldn’t have asked for a better year. Despite sitting the sidelines rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, Pettis has scored two significant endorsement deals. On Sunday, it was reported Pettis won the Wheaties Next Champion fan vote to appear on the cereal box’s cover. This announcement comes on the heels of July’s sponsorship Pettis inked with Reebok. “This is huge for the sport!!! Thank you to everyone who voted…. December 6th I will silence the critics!! @wheaties @ufc,” Pettis tweeted following his latest mainstream marketing victory. No word on when Pettis’ Wheaties box will hit store shelves. In addition to his endorsement deals with Wheaties and Reebok, Pettis also just finished serving as coach on “The Ultimate Fighter 20,” the first all-female season in the show’s extended run. Pettis ends his 15-month hiatus on December
UFC: Impostor chose Rory MacDonald's walkout music for years
UFC top welterweight contender, Rory MacDonald details how an unknown fan chose his walkout music for years.
Walkout music isn't huge business in MMA, but it is an associative identifier to certain fighters, lending it some level of importance. When I hear "Sandstorm", I think of Wanderlei Silva. When I hear "Bad reputation", I think of Ronda Rousey. A fighter's music serves another purpose in that it helps put them in the zone or amps them up for the impending violence they are about to engage in.
Now imagine if every time you chose your walkout song, the organization you're contracted to
Michael Bisping fires back at ‘laughingstock' Luke Rockhold: ‘He needs to be taught a lesson'
A week after Luke Rockhold appeared on The MMA Hour to issue a challenge for rival Michael Bisping to "put his money where his mouth is," Bisping did just the same, firing back on Tuesday's show at the "obsessed" former Strikeforce champ and his "pathetic" attempts to goad him into a fight, the most notable of which took place in the early hours of a Macau hotel following Bisping's recent fourth-round TKO victory over
Anthony Birchak had home burglarized while away for failed UFC 177 debut
Things went from bad to worse for Anthony Birchak, following the disintegration of his planned UFC debut.
The forgotten loss (among a host of others) at UFC 177 was the planned debut of Anthony Birchak. Birchak, a former MFC bantamweight champion, was all set for his first fight in the octagon. He made it through camp relatively uninjured, he was set to make weight, as was his opponent.... And then Renan Barao didn't make weight, and Birchak's opponent, none other than Joe
Alistair Overeem Addresses Dana White Issue On Jon Jones InjuryAlistair Overeem returns to the UFC octagon on Friday night as he battles the returning Ben Rothwell in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 50. “The Reem” has been dealing with some criticism leading up to the fight as UFC president Dana White was placing the blame of Jon Jones’ injured knee and ankle in training for his fight with Daniel Cormier on Overeem. Here is what White said on The Jim Rome Show. “It drives me crazy,” White said on the show. “First of all he’s fighting a 5-(foot)-10 unbelievable wrestler, that’s who he is facing in Daniel Cormier. (But) he’s training with 6-10, no-wrestling, all-standup kickboxer Alistair Overeem. And Alistair Overeem lands on his leg and busts his knee up and gives him a high ankle sprain. “I mean I just don’t know why he would be training with Alistair Overeem for a fight when he’s going to fight a 5-10 wrestler. I don’t know, it’s frustrating. “I wanted to pick the phone up about 20 times and call (Greg Jackson) and say ‘What are you
UFC fight bookings roundup - 8/26 – 9/2
The UFC has booked a bunch of fights over the last few days, and here's a rundown of what they put together.
Since the UFC has decided to produce 50+ events in 2014, there is a remarkable amount of fighter signings and new match-ups being set up throughout any given week. Many of these new signings are for match-ups that take place on the undercard, or on the Fight Pass portion of a PPV, so we are going to continue with a new weekly (or bi-weekly if needed) series of articles where we take a brief look at each and every bout booked by the promotion in one place.

"We are adding massive depth in our divisions as we are looking to start crowning more champions in the months to come," Aronson said.

Bellator 123: Countdown to Curran-Pitbull II full video
Check out the video of Spike TV's special "Countdown to Bellator 123", which highlights the main event between featherweight champion Pat Curran and Patricio Pitbull.
This week marks the return of Bellator MMA after a pair of Summer Series shows, and the main event should be an absolute thriller. Reigning featherweight champion Pat Curran takes on Patricio Freire for a 2nd time, after their first one ended in a back-and-forth war with Curran winning by split decision. Curran lost and later re-captured his belt from Daniel Straus, while Freire ripped through the featherweight tournament to seal his title shot.
Spike TV has produced a "Countdown" style show that previews this September 5th bout in Uncasville, Connecticut. An
For Beal, There Are Always Two More RoundsHe may not be as brash as a certain UFC featherweight from Ireland, but bantamweight Chris “The Real Deal” Beal is just as confident in his abilities inside the Octagon as Conor McGregor is.“In the short term we need to get another W,” says the 29-year-old from Ventura, California. “Long term, our goal is to climb our way up the ladder and hopefully get the belt and be the best in the world. We're even more hungry now than we were before. I feel like I'm starving. I not only want to win, I want to win impressively. I want the UFC to say 'Yeah, we want that kid bac ... UFC 177 medical suspensions: Joe Soto potentially out six months with fractured hand
By surviving nearly five rounds with the champion despite having little more than a day to prepare, bantamweight newcomer Joe Soto made quite an impression on fight fans at UFC 177. Unfortunately, though, it may be his last one for a while, as Soto's 180-day suspension led the California State Athletic Commission's UFC 177 post-fight medical suspension report.
Soto, a UFC rookie who picked his spots and, at times, gave as good as he got before succumbing to a fifth-round TKO loss at the hands of champ T.J. Dillashaw, could now be sidelined
Anthony Johnson: Alistair 'Oversh-t' is the biggest pussy in the heavyweight division
UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson has some harsh words about his former teammate in Alistair Overeem.
UFC fighter rankings: Joe Soto ranked at bantamweight despite KO loss to TJ Dillashaw
Joe Soto may have come up short against bantamweight champ T.J. Dillashaw, but he's good enough to be ranked in the latest UFC rankings update.
When you have a card like UFC 177, which was completely devoid of ranked fighters after the main event, the rankings don't really experience much in the way of change. For the most part, that was the case this week, but the biggest changes in the rankings involved Renan Barao, who didn't fight at all on Saturday, and Joe Soto, who was Barao's replacement and is now ranked in the top 15. He didn't
UFC 177 salaries: T.J. Dillashaw pockets $100,000 for first title defense over Joe Soto
UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw led the reported payroll for UFC 177, pocketing $100,000 for his fifth-round TKO victory -- and first successful title defense -- over 24-hour notice replacement Joe Soto, according to figures released by the California State Athletic Commission.
Dillashaw was initially expected to fight former champion Renan Barao in the pay-per-view's main event, however complications cutting weight led to Barao's hospitalization as well as his
Ben Askren's reply to UFC: 'I have a hard time with how Dana White treats people'
UFC president Dana White turned heads in Sacramento on Saturday night by declaring he wouldn't mind seeing Ben Askren in the UFC some day.
Checking in from the other side of the world, Askren is less than impressed.
"I have a hard time with how Dana White treats people," Askren said.
Askren fought in Dubai over the weekend, where he finished Nobutatsu Suzuki in 1:24 to become the OneFC welterweight champion. That raised the former Bellator champ's record to 14-0.
John McCarthy on Benson Henderson stoppage: 'I'd make the exact same decision 100 times'
Big John McCarthy last officiated a UFC bout in Nevada in 2007, a long time for one of MMA’s most revered referees to stay out of the "fight capital of the world."
That will all change on Sept. 27, when McCarthy will join the rotation of officials at UFC 178 at the MGM Grand. Yahoo’s Kevin Iole reported that McCarthy was coming back in mid-August. McCarthy had been vocal about his distaste for the Nevada Athletic Commission and its former head, Keith Kizer. But with a new regime in place, and plenty of changes underfoot, McCarthy likes the new direction of things.
On Monday, the tenured referee appeared on The MMA Hour and talked about returning to

UFC Fight Night 50 happens this weekend, and Zuffa released their traditional Countdown show to preview the stacked Fox Sports event headlined by the intriguing rematch between 'Jacare' Ronaldo Souza and Gegard Mousasi.

Bloody Elbow Vivisection: Bellator 123 - Curran vs. Pitbull 2
Dallas Winston, Zane Simon, and Victor Rodriguez take on this week's Bellator card, and try to separate the wheat from the chaff.
ONE FC's Ben Askren: 'I've got more skill in my pinky finger than half the damn UFC roster'
Former Bellator and current ONE FC welterweight champion Ben Askren went on The MMA Hour to unleash some more golden quotables, including his thoughts on the quality of the UFC roster.
ONE FC welterweight champion Ben Askren has absolutely crushed his last 4 opponents, and it's abundantly clear that the ex-Bellator champ should be in the UFC, where he can compete with the best of the best. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened yet, but at the UFC 177 press conference, Dana White did leave open the possibility that they would finally

Dan Severn on PEDs: ‘Today, if you wanted to make Frankenstein, you really could make Frankenstein’
UFC legend Dan Severn discusses PEDs and their impact on current athletes.
Add Dan Severn's name to the list of former fighters appalled with the rapid developments in performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
The UFC Halle of Famer did not limit his complaints to MMA. He believes "freak" athletes are being designed for most sports, including basketball.
"Today, if you wanted to make Frankenstein, you really could make Frankenstein," Severn told Submission Radio. "You could take a seven-foot tall basketball frame of a body, and put them on the right chemicals, and put them through the right type of training, you could
Joe Lauzon: 'I didn't know if I would ever fight again'
UFC lightweight star Joe Lauzon always planned to take a lot of time off from competition to make way for the birth of he and his wife's son. Lauzon got back in the win column with an exciting decision over Mac Danzig last December and carved out time to help get his soon-coming son Joey on his feet before taking another fight.
Joe and his wife had no idea how involved and scary things would get, however. In the first week of January, 2014, Joey Lauzon was born - bright, beautiful but already struggling more than any baby deserves to.
Joey was born with a cancer called Neuroblastoma. He couldn't leave the hospital for a long time and had to begin chemo-therapy at just days old.

Alistair Overeem responds to Dana White's anger over Jon Jones injury
Alistair Overeem addressed the UFC president's angry accusations that suggested Overeem and Greg Jackson deserve blame for Jon Jones' injury.
UFC president Dana White was very unhappy with Greg Jackson, Jon Jones and Alistair Overeem when an injury forced Jones out of his UFC 178 title defense against Daniel Cormier.
The UFC boss went on The Jim Rome Show and threw a fit about it making no sense for Jones to train for a shorter wrestler in Cormier by training with a taller striker in Overeem. It was during one of those sessions with Overeem that Jones injured his knee, forcing him out of the bout.
White said that he wanted to call Greg Jackson and yell at him for having Jones work with Overeem when he (White) has

On PEDs, drug testing and the UFC's decision to grow up a little bit
The UFC is ready to move to a more serious random blood and urine testing program. That's a great thing for sport and maybe a little bit of a bad thing for the spectacle that makes MMA so special.
In an era where other sports leagues have been dedicated to putting on at least the appearance of a "serious face" in respect to performance enhancing drugs, the UFC has been content to pass the buck. The UFC's public stance has been a mix of claiming that the promotion was "cleaned up of PEDs" and that "these guys are tested by the government," as though cash strapped state governments were the most legitimate of

Thales Leites Wants To Fight Michael Bisping NextMichael Bisping won’t be fighting Luke Rockhold next after the UFC decided to go in a different direction, and so Thales Leites has seen an opportunity to stake his claim for a fight with ‘The Count’. “Bisping is a tough fighter, does great fights. He fights for a long time, does exciting fights,” Leites told MMAfighting.com. “He’s well ranked, has a big name, and I think it’s would be great if we fight. It can be in Brazil or in England. I think it would be an interesting fight. I don’t know who they are going to match me with. If it’s Bisping, great. If it’s not, the UFC will make a good decision. I will wait, get some rest, go back to training and wait for the call.” A former UFC middleweight title contender, Leites spent several years away from the promotion after a lackluster spell for the promotion, but since returning in August of last year he’s looked rejuvenated and has so far strung together a four-fight winning streak inside the Octagon. His most recent wins have always h

A thorough guide to the freestyle wrestling world championships: 61 kg
The World Freestyle Wrestling Championships take place on September 8 and 9 of 2014. Bloody Elbow brings a preview of the 61 kg weight class.
Last year I saw Russia's Bekhan Goygereev destroy the field en route to a gold medal in the 2013 World Championships at 60 kg. I thought that I had just witnessed the ascension of wrestling's newest megastar and that Goygereev would maintain a Stranglehold on the division for as long as he wanted.
Then something weird happened: Goygereev started losing. In January, he lost to Djamal Otarsultanov at the Yarigin Memorial, then he lost to Haji Aliyev at the European Championships. Most notably, he lost at the Russian National Championships, ensuring that he would not even make the team

A Look at T.J. Dillashaw’s Strange First Title DefenseIt was getting annoying as the UFC hype machine talked up Joe Soto. We were reminded over and over that he was a brown belt in jiu-jitsu. That made him a dangerous grappler for TJ Dillashaw to face. Despite the fact that Renan Barao is a black belt himself and is actually a better MMA wrestler than Soto. It would have been nice if they had pointed out that Soto’s movement would be a much different challenge for Dillashaw. In truth, Soto did provide a tougher test for Dillashaw than Barao. Even though the result was almost exactly the same. What this fight also showed us is that Dillashaw is a true champion. Both in the willingness to take the fight on essentially no notice and the way he went for and got the finish in the final round. Dominick Cruz’ style gets referenced a lot recently when discussing Dillashaw and he brought that about by being the first to do it after his win over Barao. Dillashaw does use the movement like Cruz but he does it with more power. Another trait Cruz a...

Remember the first time you saw Bloodsport? Jean-Claude Van Damme's portrayal of Frank Dux was the best thing going at the time, and managed to turn many moviegoers into martial arts fans. Part of the magic of that film was the fact that it was based on a supposedly true story. Unfortunately, the veracity of Dux' claims has been in question for years, taking a significant amount of the luster away from his tale.

Hindsight: UFC 177 in retrospect
All you got to know is I told them that they could depend on me because you told me I could depend on you. Now one of us is gonna have a big fat problem. Another thing I learned. If anybody's gonna have a problem, you're gonna be the one.
And the UFC wanted to make it doubly clear that Renan Barao was the man with a problem at UFC 177, when they trotted him out like he'd just chewed a slipper for Joe Rogan's verbal equivalent of a rolled up newspaper to the nose. In light of all the weirdness, this is probably going to be kind of an odd
