NCAA: Ware can't receive gifts
Source: Yardbarker
Kevin Ware is a name we know for one main unfortunate reason, and it has nothing to do with his basketball play on the court. Ware was the victim of a freak, and terrible leg injury (the video if you’re interested, though I wouldn’t recommend it) during the NCAA tournament that basically left his leg in two pieces. However, after surgery, Ware is on the road to recovery, and has received an immense amount of support from around the country that was documented by Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports. The sophomore guard has been piled with letters and notes to the point where he has a person in the University Of Louisville’s office dedicated to handling and organizing the plethora of things being sent Ware’s way. Some supporters have taken it a step further, and have sent Ware gifts as a kind gesture. One problem: many of these gifts violate NCAA policy and cannot be accepted. Forde lists some of the gifts that have been returned or used for other purposes: A significant amount of the mail has been flagged for R

New Mexico and Steve Alford have reached a deal on a separation agreement.
Alford and UCLA will pay $300,000 to New Mexico to satisfy a buyout clause in his contract with his former employer. New Mexico had initially demanded a $1 million buyout when Alford was hired by UCLA in late-March.
Alford left New Mexico on March 30 just 12 days after agreeing to a new contract with New Mexico that was scheduled to take effect on April 1. Alford maintained that he was not responsible for the $1 million buyout in that new deal because he was hired by UCLA before it went into effect.

Former Indiana Hoosiers center Cody Zeller achieved a standing vertical leap of 35.5″ at the NBA Draft combine on Friday. The 20-year-old Zeller’s jump is a record for any individual listed at 6’9″ or above in the last decade. After averaging 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists over 36 games as a sophomore, the 7-foot, 240 pound Zeller unwisely declared for the draft in April. Once considered a top-five selection, Zeller is now only expected to go somewhere in the upper half of the opening round. Yesterday, CBS released the biography that Jordan had provided the school as part of his application. Former Kentucky guard Archie Goodwin was one of those players I thought needed another year in college. Goodwin is physically not ready for the pro game, and he’s more than likely going to be in the D-League. I always had a feeling his mind was in the NBA while he was still serving his 1-year in Lexington. Goodwin never seemed to develop or improve that much under the coaching of John Calipari. NBA Draft executives have made note, and that is a major concern for someone looking to draft him. Goodwin was always trying to drive to the basket and overpower anyone and anything in his way. He may have had success doing that in high school, but that mentality hurt him in college. If he tries that in the NBA? He’ll get hurt.
During today’s NBA Draft combine, Goodwin was participating in workouts in front of NBA personnel to showcase his skills. Most of the NBA Draft participants who are expected to be picked in the high first round sat out of today’s workouts. Some of the participants that sat out may have a

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The pending arrival of eight heralded newcomers has allowed Kentucky coach John Calipari to quickly move on after losing out on top recruit Andrew Wiggins.
Calipari is confident his large recruiting class will mesh and have the Wildcats back in national championship contention.
Calipari acknowledges the challenge of melding the skills of another talented group of freshmen, one featuring six McDonald's All-Americans. Kentucky's latest recruiting class is considered the best in school history, ratcheting expectations of a ninth national championship next season.
Wiggins was considered the final piece for a Wildcats' title run, but the nation's top-rated player committed to Kansas Tuesday.
Still, Calipari's believes his class will be successful because junior Kyle Wiltjer and sophomores Willie Cauley-Stein and Alex Poythress return to provide experience and leadership for the rookies.
His only caveat: expecting too much from his 13-man roster, especially after Kentucky

Penn State guard Jermaine Marshall, the team's second-leading scorer, is foregoing his senior year of eligibility to pursue a professional career.
The team announced the surprise move in a statement Wednesday. Marshall is on schedule to graduate this summer.
Coach Patrick Chambers said Marshall cited turning pro as in the best interests of the player's son and family. Marshall said it was a difficult decision, and thanked the basketball program.
Marshall had steadily improved in his three years on the court. He averaged 15.3 points last season and took on more leadership and ball-handling responsibilities after point guard Tim Frazier went down in November with a left Achilles injury.
Frazier is expected back next year to join leading scorer D.J. Newbill (16.3 points) in the backcourt.

The aftermath of Andrew Wiggins’ announcement on Tuesday has been enlightening.
Had he picked Kentucky, then many would have maintained their assumption the Wildcats would be the juggernauts of the 2013-14 season.
By choosing Kansas, however, Wiggins cast some doubt on that notion.
Next season will be bigger than Kentucky basketball. That’s always been the case, but it’s just more obvious now that the No. 1 recruit in America has selected a program outside of Lexington.

When people rail against the inequities of the NCAA, they're typically talking about money. A college basketball coach can make $10 million in a year because he generates that much value for his university, but also because that money has to go somewhere, and it certainly isn't going to the players. This strikes most as unfair, because it is. It's also obvious.
Less obvious, at least to the layman, are all of the little injustices. Players have to be amateurs or the purity of the games would be corrupted; it's totally cool if coaches are professionals.

It’s now been nearly two days since the Andrew Wiggins Sweepstakes was won by Bill Self and Kansas. Reactions have run the gamut and we ran down a number of the better ones in yesterday’s M5. One we missed was this fantastic piece by Sam Mellinger at the Kansas City Star, who writes that everyone in the media and greater college basketball community needs to be very careful with the hyperbole when discussing Wiggins next season as the “Best High School Prospect Since Lebron.” Mellinger breaks down each of the best prep players in the last 10 years since Lebron, [...]

1. The ACC coaches want to get the conference tournament in Madison Square Garden and discussed it at length during the league meetings in Amelia Island, Fla., on Tuesday and Wednesday. But whether or not they can pull that off is out of their control. MSG has long wanted a regular tenant, based on the busy March schedule with outside events, as well as primary hosts the Rangers and Knicks. The ACC is reviewing MSG's deal with the new Big East. MSG is unlikely going to go with a conference that would only make a cameo in the building every so often.

New Minnesota mens basketball head coach Richard Pitino left Florida International to become a Gopher, and it looks like he wont be the only one to do so.
Malik Smith, a junior guard from Boston, Mass., announced via Twitter that he had chosen Minnesota over Alabama as the place where he would play out his final season of NCAA eligibility.
"My decision is final. I'm a Minnesota Gopher baby!!!!! BIG10 here I come! Blessed GodIsGood Ready," Smith Tweeted early Wednesday morning. He will be immediately eligible to play and will not have to sit out a year as is the norm for transfers per college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.
