On this day in 1932 William Frederick "Billy" Hoeft was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was 18 when the Tigers signed him as an amateur free agent in 1950, and 19 when he made his major league debut for Detroit on April 18, 1952. He pitched two innings in relief that day, the first over over 1800 in the major leagues.
Hoeft was a full time major league starter already in his age 21 season in 1953 and played 15 seasons in the majors. His best season was probably 1955, when he posted a 2.99 ERA and pitched seven complete game shutouts while compiling 220 innings of work. He also made his only All Star team that year.

Please, for once, I’d like to write a recap that actually has a winning tune to it. I’ve written one and only one. So, basically what happened? Randy Wolf had a bad outing, that’s what. I think bad might actually be an understatement, but as always, you have give credit where credit is due and today it belongs to the Astros’ line-up, specifically Jed Lowrie and Carlos Lee. Astros’ starter Bud Norris had a pretty tremendous outing against the Brew Crew, which is unusual considering his prior struggles facing this line-up. While there really isn’t any positive aspect to take away from this game, I suppose the one thing we can be somewhat glad about is that after Wolf’s four innings of work, our bullpen pitched five innings, only giving up one run on one hit (which happened to be a home run to Carlos Lee). We saw bounce back performances lately from Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum, thinking that Randy Wolf would be next. Guess not.

In what's becoming an increasingly alarming trend, Rickie Weeks didn't bring anything to the table offensively tonight. He struck out in each of his four plate appearances, raising his season total to 48 in 37 Brewer games. He's on pace to strike out 210 times this season, which would be the third highest mark in National League history.
Weeks has multiple strikeouts in eight of his last eleven appearances (and one of the others was a single plate appearance as a pinch hitter). This is the eighteenth time he's had multiple K's in a game this season, which is already tied for the 118th highest single-season total in Brewer franchise history. He's on pace to do it

Bud Norris stymied the Brewers’ offense over seven innings as the Houston Astros cruised to a comfortable 8-3 win over Milwaukee, Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park. Randy Wolf came into the game 5-0 in his last seven starts against Houston but was not effective before being removed after the fourth inning.
Wolf (2-4, 6.38) took the loss after he allowed seven runs, six earned, seven hits, three walks and one strike out over just four innings. Norris (4-1, 3.58) kept the Brewers’ bats silent, allowing just four hits, one run and a season high nine strike outs over seven strong innings. The only blemish on his night was a solo home run by Corey Hart in the fourth inning with Houston already leading 5-0. Norris is 3-0 in his last four starts with his last loss coming April 24th against Milwaukee.
The Astros opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second inning. Carlos “El Caballo” Lee lined a lead off single to left. Jed Lowrie knocked a RBI double high off the wall in left field scoring Lee from first. Right fielder Justin Maxwell, first pitch swinging, collected the Astros’ third consecutive hit on a sharp ground ball back up the middle scoring Lowrie.
In the bottom of the third, Bud Norris hit a hot shot off the glove of Rickie Weeks into center field. After Jordan Schafer struck out looking, Jose Altuve hit a single to right field. J.D. Martinez then walked on four pitches. El Caballo hit a two RBI single past a diving Cesar Izturis, giving the Astros a 4-0 advantage. Jed Lowrie reached on an error by Corey Hit on a well-hit ball to deep right with J.D. Martinez scoring Houston’s fifth run.
Corey Hart atoned for his error by belting a solo shot to left, his eighth of the year. The run cut the advantage to 5-1. Hart also went deep off Bud Norris in the April 24th contest at Miller Park.
Jason Castro started the Astros’ fourth with a walk. Bud Norris advanced Castro to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jordan Schafer knocked a bloop single to center scoring Castro, 6-1 Astros. Jose Altuve walked. With J.D. Martinez batting, the Astros executed a double steal. Martinez flied out and Schafer tagged and scored. In an unorthodox move, Nyjer Morgan called off Hart in right center on the play, and his throw was off target. Although Hart possesses the better arm and was already settled under the ball, Morgan stepped in front to record the out.
Ron Roenicke pinch-hit Brooks Conrad for Randy Wolf to lead off the fifth. Conrad struck out on a full count, still looking for hit number one on the season. Norris fanned Morgan and Rickie Weeks to strike out the side.
Vinnie Chulk took over for Randy Wolf and struck out the side for the Brewers in the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh Carlos Lee plastered Tim Dillard’s 1-0 offering over the fence in left field for his third hit on the evening and third home run of the season. 8-1 Astros.
Rhiner Cruz took over on the mound for Houston in the eighth, replacing Norris. Rickie Weeks struck out for the fourth time, earning the infamous golden sombrero.
Rhiner Cruz lost his control in the ninth, walking Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart and forcing a change from manager Brad Mills. Left-hander Wesley Wright came and erased Edwin Maysonet, pinch-hitting for Kottaras. Jonathan Lucroy then ripped a two RBI pinch hit triple on the first pitch from Wright for the final margin of 8-3.
Aramis Ramirez went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored, snapping a twelve game hitting streak.
El Caballo left the Brewers’ pitching staff with a long face going 3-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

If nothing else, this was an interesting play defensively. Ryan Braun was fooled by the flight of this ball and wasn't in position to field it when it caromed off the short porch in left field. As such, Cesar Izturis had to come out and get it, creating a rare "double to shortstop." Carlos Lee scored from first with the game's first run.

I don't know if I'd say mystifying, but I'm concerned about it. It's frustrating, that's what it is. It's frustrating. The guys are working hard every day, we have a good game, we think we're going to get going, and we don't. I know Norris threw a nice game, was hitting his spots with his fastball and he's got such a good slider, but we can't repeat and get things going in too many consecutive days.

At 7:05 tonight they'll face Bud Norris (3.93 ERA, 3.67 FIP), who is 27 years old and arguably having his best major league season. Another day, another outstanding start for Milwaukee Brewers ace, Zach Greinke. Unfortunately for Brewers fans, each subsequent gem that Greinke throws means they have less of a chance of keeping their star.
The evidence of this comes from CBS' Jon Heyman, who recently interviewed Brewers GM Mark Attanasio:
"The Brewers' Mark Attanasio is a terrific owner who badly wants to keep star pitcher Zack Greinke in Milwaukee but understands probably better than anyone the realities of trying to sign a big-time talent in a very small market."
Greinke is set to hit free agency next winter, and it's unlikely the Brewers, who already have a team salary of $97 million, are going to be able to give him the raise he deserves.
Because of that, the Brew Crew must start talking trades for their young ace, especially if their losing ways continue.
What will Greinke cost?
Greinke started off the season on a sour note, but he has been absolutely lights out in his last few starts (15 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 18 SO). He has lowered his ERA to 2.88 and his WHIP to 1.12 on the season.
If the righty continues to dominate hitters at this pace, his value is going to hit an all-time high.
Of course, as Attanasio points out, it's sometimes more about the market than it is about the player.
"I am a creature of the market, so I am attuned to the market,'' Attanasio said, allowing that the Cain contract does indeed "set a market price.''
For reference, Cain got a five-year, $112.5-million extension. The two biggest starting pitcher free agents in 2011 were C.J Wilson and Yu Darvish. Wilson got five years and $77.5 million, while Darvis got six years and $60 million.
In 2010, Cliff Lee got five years and $120 million, and in 2009, John Lackey got five years and $82.5 million (woopsie).
Greinke, however, is younger than Wilson, Lee, and Lackey all were at the time, and he has considerably less question marks than Darvish. There's no question in mind, should Greinke stay healthy this year, he will get five years for at least $100 million.
Will the Brewers pay Greinke?
Milwaukee likes Greinke and Greinke likes Milwaukee. It's a good relationship and both sides will certainly try to get something done.
Additionally, Milwaukee has offered C.C. Sabathia and Prince Fielder big-time money in the past, so there is definitely a chance the Brewers keep their stud.
However, Milwaukee is a mid-market club and the odds of a big-market team blowing Greinke away with an overly-ridiculous offer are high.
So, why trade him?
All of this basically means Greinke, at his current pace, is going to be one expensive cookie. The odds of signing him are completely up in the air right now.
A team like Milwaukee can't afford to lose someone with so much value for nothing. There's nothing wrong with listening to offers at this point in hopes that a legitimate contender falls over itself to acquire a late-season rental.
It's better to be safe than sorry at this point. Getting something for Greinke now would be the safest move possible.

Over the last decade, the Milwaukee Brewers have become notorious for their surplus of power hitters in their minor league affiliates. A large reason for that distinction has come through the draft, where they've been able to develop a collection of current sluggers at the big league level.
But if you took a quick peek at the present state of their minor league partners, however, odds are you'd respectfully disagree.
With a farm system looking to reload at this June's draft, the Brewers have hardly any positional prospects who could push for a call-up in the immediate future, let alone any with exceptional power potential. However, there have been a few youngsters who've gotten off to a hot start this season, strutting their power as best they can.
