Could Mike Matheny's overuse of Trevor Rosenthal lead to an injury?
Source: Yardbarker
After a bumpy start to the season, Trevor Rosenthal has settled into his setup role nicely. Since April 24th, he has allowed only 1 unearned run in 9.2 IP. He has seen his ERA drop from a high of 5.00 on April 17th to the current low of 2.42.
However, despite his run of success, there is one thing that concerns me, Mike Matheny has been using Rosenthal A LOT.
Rosenthal has appeared in 23 of the Cardinals first 44 games, which puts him on pace for about 85 appearances for the year. While it is not unheard of for a team to use a pitcher that much, its rare for a team to do that to someone under the age of 25. Since 2000, only 4 pitchers under the age of 25 have appeared in more than 81 games in a season: Oscar Villareal, Matt Capps, Jonathan Broxton and Joe Smith.
Oscar Villareal appeared in 86 games in his rookie season at the age of 21. He reported a sore elbow the next spring and later developed rotator cuff issues and has not been the same pitcher since.
Matt Capps appea...

When baseball legend and St. Louis icon Stan Musial died in January at 92 he left behind a legion of fans and a long list of honors, including having the fourth-most hits in MLB history. He also left behind a 5,286-square-foot, three-acre estate in St. Louis that was built in 1962. The house is now on the market for $1.795 million .
It has four bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a pool and a mid-century style you'd expect from someone born in 1920 — like a checkered marble floor in the entry way and a decent amount of pastel in the living room.
We've heard of people buying old cars owned by famous people, but how about Musial's house? For a hardcore Cardinals fan, that's a one-of-a-kind souvenir, definitely something to talk about at dinner. And at a modest price when you consider what some houses sell for. Andruw Jones' mansion cost $5 million , and he didn't have anything near Musial's 3,630 career hits. Though, as was Stan "The Man's" style, he lived modestly compared to Andruw Jones' of the world.

Cardinals' Jaime Garcia to see Dr. Andrews
Source: Yardbarker
He's a great doctor, but anytime his name is associated with a player's name, it's generally bad news. This time, that bad news is hanging around Jaime Garcia. The St. Louis Cardinals' veteran starter was just recently placed on the disabled list with a shoulder strain. Now, it seems that strain may be more serious as Garcia intends to see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.
According to a #STLCards official, Jaime Garcia is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday for second opinion on his left shoulder.
— Jenifer Langosch (@LangoschMLB) May 21, 2013
A meeting with Andrews does not immediately mean surgery will be scheduled, but more often than not, players meet with the renowned doctor when they are out of options and nothing else is helping. If that's the case with Garcia, there is a very good chance he undergoes surgery. And that could cost him the rest of the season.
Garcia suffered a shoulder injury last season as well. Garci...

COMMENTARY | The St. Louis Cardinals entered a May 20 road game against the San Diego Padres boasting a 28-15 record and held a narrow 2.5-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Central. Like any other team in Major League Baseball, the Cardinals have suffered their fair share of injuries, particularly in the starting rotation, which has made the team's incredible start to the season all the more impressive.

Source: Yardbarker
After he was recently cleared to resume a throwing program, St. Louis Cardinals right-handed starting pitcher Jake Westbrook made 25 throws from 60 feet yesterday, according to Jenifer Langosch and Chad Thornburg of MLB.com.
Following the session, Westbrook said "it went well," adding that his elbow "feels a lot better." The veteran was placed on the disabled list due to inflammation in his throwing elbow last week. He expects to play catch again today.
At this point, the Cardinals remain hopeful that Westbrook will only miss three starts. His placement on the DL was retroactive to May 9, and he's been dealing with the inflammation as well as biceps tendinitis since. Since his absence, John Gast has started in his place.
Before hitting the DL, Wesbrook was off to a nice start for the Cardinals. Despite his pedestrian 1.462 WHIP, the 35-year-old maintained a 1.62 ERA over his first six starts of the season spanning 39 innings.

Jason Marquis has spent his entire career on life support. He's finished a season with his ERA over six twice and under four twice; he's was 33-years-old before he pushed his K:BB ratio over two for the first time in his career. He's a sinkerballer who allowed 1.3 home runs per nine innings while pitching for Dave Duncan. Baseball Reference says he's worth six wins above replacement as a pitcher (in 1852 innings) and four as a hitter (in 679 plate appearances.)
For a while I was surprised—every time I saw him in a new uniform—that Jason Marquis was still playing baseball. Eventually the surprise turned on itself, ate its own tail, and on my deathbed,

The Juice returns for season No. 6! It's almost eligible for free-agency! Stop by daily for news from the action, along with great photos, stats, video highlights and more.
Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was having perhaps his best start of the season for the San Francisco Giants on Monday. But this is the National League, where pitchers bat and accidents happen, and now Vogelsong is slated to have surgery Tuesday to fix a broken pitching hand. He had pitched five innings of three-hit ball against the Washington Nationals in an 8-0 victory at AT&T Park, but that's the extent of the good news. (And Brandon Belt had four hits and scored four runs — that's also good.)
Swinging in self-defense during his at-bat against Craig Stammen in the fifth inning, Vogelsong didn't get enough wood on the ball. The Associated Press reports:
Vogelsong broke two bones along the right pinkie and dislocated a knuckle the area that the medical staff couldn't get popped back into place. He was scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning at Stanford and said he likely would have pins inserted to stabilize the hand and help speed the healing process.
''We're not talking about Tommy John or anything here,'' Vogelsong said, his eyes misty. ''Basically as fast as we can get it to heal so I can start throwing again.''
Someone lend a hand: Remarkably, we have another broken hand to announce regarding a pitcher named Ryan on one of these teams.

The salaries of Johan Santana and Jason Bay are coming off the books, giving New York more financial flexibility. While some want the Mets to go after Shin Soo-Choo and Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran should be given heavy consideration.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Even without his best stuff, Shelby Miller managed to keep a modest scoreless innings streak alive.
The St. Louis Cardinals rookie enters with 14 2-3 scoreless innings heading into Monday night's road matchup with Jason Marquis, who has won four straight starts for the San Diego Padres.
Miller (5-2, 1.40 ERA) is tied for the majors' lowest ERA with the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw. He did not get a decision for the first time Wednesday, throwing 96 pitches over 5 2-3 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Mets.
"It's not always going to be smooth," he said. "I got away with some mistakes."
That effort came after the 22-year-old right-hander struck out a season-high 13 in a one-hitter May 10 in a 3-0 win over Colorado.
This will be his first start against the Padres, who were the only team to score against him in Miller's six 2012 appearances. He allowed two runs over three innings Sept. 10 in his first road game.

Shelby Miller Rookie Season One To Remember Thus Far
Source: Yardbarker
TheSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Shelby Miller has had a rookie season to remember. Nearly two months into the 2013 season, Miller has not only pitched his way to recognition as one of the premier rookies in the game, but also as one of the most dominating pitchers in either league this season.
A first-round draft pick (19th overall) in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, Shelby Miller has been a perennial top prospect for the past three seasons following solid performances at A, AA, and AAA levels of the St. Louis farm system.
St. Louis was careful in their grooming of the young starter, slowly bringing him up through each level and ensuring that Miller was not rushed in his development.
Following an inconsistent 2012 season at Triple-A Memphis where Miller posted a mediocre 4.74 ERA through 136.2 innings, the Cardinals organization could not have expected Miller to have as much success as he’s had this season.
