The Padres will be looking to get back to four games under .500 as they take on the division co-leader Diamondbacks tonight in the second game of a three game set. Andrew Cashner will be making his seventh start of the season, opposing Arizona's Wade Miley.
Miley, runner up in last year's NL ROY race, picked up this season where he left off. He has faltered of late, though, losing three of his last four starts and seeing his ERA climb from 2.37 to 3.67 in that time. Miley has never had much luck against the Padres, going 1-3 with a 6.28 ERA over five games.
Cashner seems to be settling into his role as a starter recently, going at least 6.2 innings in each of his last three starts. He won two of them and took a no decision

A wild Friday night in Major League Baseball wouldn’t have been complete without an appearance from Heath Bell. Right on cue, the newly anointed Arizona Diamondbacks closer delivered a moment that managed to stand out amongst the weirdness as he finished out his old team , the San Diego Padres.
Naturally, the play happened in the ninth inning. With one out, Padres outfielder Will Venable dragged a bunt that slowly bounced into no man’s land between the pitcher’s mound, first base, and the second baseman’s position. You know what that play usually looks like. Three fielders converging on the ball looking like they’ve never prepared for the scenario a single time in their professional career.
Sometimes you’ll see a second baseman bail the team out with a nifty glove flip (only if the first baseman reads it correctly). Other times you’ll see the pitcher scoop it up and run to the bag himself. But most of the time it’s a frustrating base hit.
I’m not completely sure what Heath Bell was trying to do on his attempt to field the ball from his pitching position. Maybe he initially thought he’d scoop it up and somehow win the footrace with the speedy Venable. If so, he was sadly mistaken, because the result was an awkward and fruitless belly flop dive that we’re surprised didn’t knock the wind out of him.

With a pair of big leaguers in the lineup, Tucson still didn't manage to do much. Donn Roach got back on track for San Antonio as the Missions win their third straight. The Storm played their second extra-long game of the week, but at least came away with the win this time. Fort Wayne dropped their fourth straight behind a rough outing for Ruben Mejia.

2nd Inning
A cringing Carlos Quentin chugged around the first base en route to second after hitting a ball into the left field corner. His knees are seriously effed right now always. Yonder Alonso singled him in. Quentin grimaced while trotting home, giving the Padres the 1-0 lead. The Padres thought that's the only run they'd need with Eric Stults on the mound.

7th Inning
Bud Black seemed perfectly content to let Eric Stults finish the game. Stults seemed gassed. He gave up back to back doubles to start the inning. Then a walk. Then another double. With Arizona now held the 2-1 lead. Bud Black decided to pull Stults.
Dale Thayer came in and promptly gave up a single, scoring another run. Again Black

The scene is Dodger Stadium, July 9, 2011. The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are not only locked in a scoreless duel in the bottom of the ninth inning, but there has been only one hit in the game–a single off the bat of the Padres' Cameron Maybin.
Padres' starter Aaron Harang had been pulled after six innings, despite having a no-hitter in the works, because he was fresh off the disabled list and had reached his pitch limit. It would be up to the bullpen to

You’re reading Padres Public, so you don’t need me to tell you that the Padres changed the outfield dimensions this off-season, shortening all of right field and a small sliver of the left center gap. You knew that. But you may not know how well that’s working out for the Padres–if it’s been good, bad, or indifferent. That I can help you with.
It’s impossible to say with complete certainty how the new dimensions have affected play. Would a new-fence-enabled home run have been a double, a triple, or just a long, loud Petco’d out with the old dimensions? Even hits into the now shorter gaps or down the right foul line might’ve played differently.
However, we can chronicle the home runs that wouldn’t have been home runs last year, see which teams are hitting them and how much they’ve benefitted. Which I have. I’ve got a Google Docs spreadsheet where I’m keeping track. There are also tabs showing who hit these not-before-possible taters, and yearly batting da
