The beginning of the game was highlighted by excellent play from the Rays outfield both offensively and defensively. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Edwin Encarnacion hit a hard line drive that landed on the left field warning track and bounced against the wall. Kelly Johnson fielded it off the wall like he had been playing outfield his whole career and fired a (one hop) strike to second base to get EE3 at second. While MLB grapples with the idea of expanding instant replay in the wake of a series of umpiring gaffes, the oddities in its current replay policy were thoroughly exposed on Sunday afternoon.
During the top of the sixth inning, the Rays’ Matt Joyce hit what umpires initially ruled as a double to right field. After the ruling on the field, both Orioles manager Buck Showalter and his Tampa Bay counterpart, Joe Maddon, came out to argue the call.
While Showalter argued that the ball was, in fact, foul, Maddon wanted a video replay to determine whether the ball was a home run. However, he didn’t want said review if there was a chance that the ball could be ruled foul, which makes the ruling on the field integral.
What happens next is a little nutty.
In effect, Showalter had to argue that the ruling should have been a home run against his own team, since fair-foul calls can’t be reviewed. Thus, Showalter would be hoping such a replay would determine the ball was actually foul.
In the end...

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon says that after reviewing video from yesterday afternoon’s game and having a conversation with shortstop Yunel Escobar, he doesn’t think that Escobar did anything wrong. “He did nothing wrong,” Maddon said. Escobar, made a gesture after hitting a home run Monday, slashing his arms in an exaggerated safe signal. After the game Maddon commented, “I love him on this team. I love him in the clubhouse. I love everything about this young man,” Maddon said (TBO.com), “but I still want to talk to him about the reaction after the home run, and I’m certain you’re not going to see that again.” Finally some semblance of common sense. Escobar’s celebrating after a home run really isn’t all that different than say a closer Rafael Soriano ripping his shirt out after recording the last out, or yet another closer Fernando Rodney shooting an imaginary arrow after a save. Th Rays themselves have taken to shooting imaginary arrows towards their dugout after a

Matt Moore pitched seven innings of five-hit ball to stay unbeaten, Luke Scott and Matt Joyce homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 Sunday for a three-game sweep.
Moore (8-0) gave up one run, struck out three and walked one. The left-hander has won nine straight decisions, breaking the franchise record of eight set last year by David Price.
The Rays' ninth win in 11 games put them a season-high three games over .500 (23-20) and lifted Tampa Bay into a third-place tie with skidding Baltimore in the AL East. The Rays had been in fourth since April 20.
Adam Jones had two hits, stole two bases and drove in a run for the Orioles, who have dropped five straight - all at home.
Chris Tillman (3-2) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. He's 1-5 lifetime against the Rays.
Tampa Bay led 2-1 in the sixth inning when Joyce hit a drive that appeared to bounce off the wall near the right-field foul pole. First base umpire Dan Iassogna called it a fair ball but not a home run.

Before Jake Odorrizi’s Monday start, another member of the well-regarded Durham rotation made a notable appearance for the Rays over the weekend.
Alex Torres’ second outing for the Rays this season lasted longer and burned brighter than his first—a five-pitch, one-out clean-up job against the Red Sox nights earlier. On Saturday Torres pitched four innings of no-hit ball, keeping the Rays in the game and enabling their eventual come-from-behind victory. The prolonged appearance gave Torres the chance to show off the tweaks in his game he worked on last year during his exile to the Gulf Coast League.
One of the noticeable changes is a quickened pace on the mound—Torres seemed to hop back on the rubber after

BALTIMORE (AP) -- In a story May 19 about the Tampa Bay Rays' 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, The Associated Press, using information from the Orioles' game notes, reported erroneously that 23-year-old Matt Moore is the youngest lefty to start the season 8-0 since Babe Ruth in 1917. Moore is the youngest left-handed American League pitcher used exclusively as a starter to start 8-0 since Ruth in 1917.

In 16 days, the 2013 draft will begin on June 6th and run through the 8th. It'll be the second draft since the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement changed the game, but even this year's draft will be a little different from last year's. In addition to the assigned pick values being 8.2% higher, the new compensation system will be fully implemented instead of Bud Selig determining comp picks on the fly like 2012.
Unlike last year, the Rays will have an extra pick. In addition to their own first rounder at 21st overall, they have Atlanta's first rounder at 29th overall as compensation for losing B.J.

For example, he had fastballs anywhere from 87 to 95 mph. And the movement on his pitches, which is likely related to the speed, was also over the place. Sometimes there was a lot of movement and sometimes the pitch was straight. When a pitcher lacks consistency, it is hard for them to command

Showalter may think twice arguing call
Source: Yardbarker
A bit of posturing on the part of Orioles manager Buck Showalter cost his team two bases and a run Sunday, after Showalter argued that a double by Matt Joyce should have been called foul -- and it was instead ruled a home run after review.
The play happened with one out in the top of the sixth inning, with the Rays leading 2-1. Joyce, a left-handed batter, hooked a line drive down the right-field line and strolled into second with a stand-up double after the ball, which appeared to hit near the top of the wall, was ruled fair.
Showalter then emerged from the Orioles dugout to protest the call, which led Rays manager Joe Maddon to come out in his own defense. After a lengthy discussion with both managers, the umpiring crew decided to review the play -- which, by rule, means someone (probably Maddon) argued that the ball had actually cleared the fence.
After checking the replay, the umpires determined that the ball was neither a double nor a foul ball, but actually, a home run that had hit a metal stanchion
