The New York Yankees acquired utility infielder Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies for cash. originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2004 draft. Brignac was traded to Colorado in February. Brignac hit .250 with one home run and six RBI with the Rockies.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman feels the team is upgrading with Brignac. Brignac, “is a very good fielder,” Cashman said, “and gives us a better platoon situation because all of the left side of the infield bats righthanded.”
Brignac is the 36th player used by the Yankees this season and 13th to play infield. The Yankees are still waiting for the return of Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
New York designated shortstop Alberto Gonzalez for assignment to make room for Brignac on the 40-man roster.

Tyler Chatwood wasn’t just good Saturday night in the Rockies’ 10-2 victory over the Giants. He was also a little bit lucky.
In the Giants’ second inning — the only inning in which Chatwood gave up a run — the Giants’ Buster Posey was at second base when Chatwood’s uncorked a wild pitch. The ball caromed off the backstop — which is now several feet closer after an offseason renovation — and into catcher Wilin Rosario’s glove. Rosario was able to throw Posey out at third.

The Yankees have made another move to add some depth at the big league level, as they have acquired utility man Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash. Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez has been designated for assignment.
Brignac, 27, represents versatility and a slight upgrade offensively from Gonzalez. In his career, Brignac has played shortstop, second base and the outfield. He spent five years with the AL East rival Rays, before being traded to Colorado in February. He was designated for assignment on Thursday, so the Yankees scooped him up.
A lefty, New York hopes he can utilize the short-porch in right field. However, he is more known for his glove than his bat. This season, Brignac is hitting .250 with a homer and six RBIs. For his career, he is a .228 hitter. He is expected to be with the team for tomorrow’s series finale with the Jays.

It's a casual Friday. All bullets, all the time.
• The Arizona at Miami game got out of hand quickly, as the Snakes posted six runs in the first three innings and turned the game into a rout. Paul Goldschmidt clocked a couple of homers, because that's what Goldschmidts do, and I'd like to burn every nice thing I said about Kevin Slowey this spring.
But let's try to find an actionable item here. Say hello to Arizona's cleanup man, Eric Chavez .
The veteran lefty swinger filled the box score nicely, with three singles and a homer over five trips. Chavez knocked in two runs and is slashing .337/.398/.584 on the year. He's still a useful player at age 35, worthy of a fantasy audit.
A decade ago, the Chavez story was much different. He was one of the superstars on the Oakland juggernaut of the early 2000s, one of the players Moneyball more or less ignored so we could all learn to appreciate Scott Hatteberg . Chavez offered a nifty mix of power and patience, and he also bagged six Gold Gloves in a row. Durability wasn't an issue back then, as Chavez logged 151 games or more in five of six seasons.
Alas, the wave broke in Chavez's late 20s, when his body began to betray him. He missed a month of time in 2006 and things got progressively worse; from 2007-2010, he never played in more than 90 games. A career on a possible Hall of Fame trajectory quickly spiraled out of control.

If you recall, during a game at Coors Field in September of 2010, Tim Lincecum tossed a baseball out of play and could be seen mouthing the words “blank this juiced ball fertilizer.”
I’m paraphrasing, of course, while channeling my inner Vin Scully.
Lincecum never backed off his words following the game, and the accusation seemed to be that Colorado would occasionally throw a few non-humidor baseballs into the bag later in games to give their offense a better chance at instant offense. With their desired lineup intact for the first time in 40 games, the Atlanta Braves offense turned it up a notch in their 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jason Heyward, who just returned from the disabled list on Thursday after undergoing an emergency appendectomy in Colorado last month, reached base three times to help set the table. Justin Upton then cleared it in the sixth, cracking his third career grand slam off Paco Rodriguez.
''As soon as he took that swing, I knew that ball was going to be out of the ballpark,'' said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Jon Heyman tweets that the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Minnesota Twins are two teams who could have interest in infielder Reid Brignac.

Brignac was recently designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies after hitting for a .250/.294/.375 line in 48 at-bats. In his career in the majors he has a .228/.270/.321 line in 719 at-bats. The strength of his game is that he has good defensive tools, which would have some appeal as a backup infielder who can cover shortstop. His numbers aren’t inspiring, but he’d be a better option than John McDonald.
Back in 2008 there were trade rumors at the deadline that the Pirates were interested in Brignac, including a rumor that a deal was done sending Jason Bay to Tampa Bay in exchange for Brignac and Jeff Niemann.

When Jordan Pacheco’s father, Joe, comes up from Albuquerque for Saturday night’s game against the Giants, his son will have a keepsake ready for him. It will be a baseball, in a sealed plastic bag.
The same baseball that Pacheco knocked over the left-field fence in the fifth inning Friday night for the first grand slam of his big-league career. The homer, off San Francisco Madison lefty Bumgarner, fueled the Rockies’ 10-9 victory over the Giants.
Pacheco, always low-key in front of the media, was pretty matter-of-fact regarding what was perhaps the Rockies’ biggest hit of the season.
“It’s good,” he said. “I don’t hit a lot of home runs, but I was glad I was able to hit one there and I’m

Jordan Pacheco launched his first career grand slam Friday night.By Bryan HeadJordan Pacheco's first career grand slam propelled the Colorado Rockies over the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field on Friday night, ending a 10-game losing streak against their division rivals. The Rockies fell behind early when former Rockie Marco Scutaro singled off of Jorge De La Rosa, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Buster Posey. When the Giants added three more runs in the top of the 2nd inning, it looked like the Rockies were going to once again lose ground in the NL West. Wilin Rosario gave Rockies fans hope when he led off the Rockies half of the 2nd inning with a single, and later scored on a ground ball from Jordan Pacheco. The Rockies showed off their speed in the 3rd inning, when Eric Young Jr. led off with an infield single and Dexter Fowler reached on a bunt. Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki added hard-hit singles to tie the game at 4. The Rockies blew the game open in th...
