It's no secret that the Royals have possessed one of the best farm systems in baseball over the past few years.
Last year, they were able to begin calling up several of their top prospects to the majors, including third baseman Mike Moustakas and left-handed pitcher Danny Duffy.
Now, it's almost time for the next wave of talented prospects to be called up to the big leagues.
Here are five prospects that could be getting that call from the Royals in the near future.

Come this time next year, the bulk of the Kansas City Royals’ roster will be made up of some of the best young talent that Major League Baseball has to offer.
The Royals’ Minor League system has been ranked at or near the top in all of baseball over the last few years and beginning last season, fans started to witness all the chatter actually take its shape at Kaufman Stadium.
In addition to holdovers Billy Butler and Alex Gordon, general manager Dayton Moore has methodically peppered in young players such as Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Danny Duffy and Salvador Perez onto the Royals' roster.
Although some of their sophomore years aren’t going as planned (Hosmer mired in a season-long slump, Perez knee injury in spring training and Duffy’s potential Tommy John Surgery), the plan is to keep moving forward with the home-grown talent leading the charge.
Though there hasn’t been much activity in the form of new faces on the Big League roster in 2012, the recent promotions of top prospects Wil Myers (outfielder) and Jake Odorizzi (starting pitcher) to Class AAA Omaha indicate that the second wave is on its way to Kansas City. They will join starting pitcher Mike Montgomery, who is also considered a key piece to the future of the franchise.
While some of these players mend and others battle through dry spells, it makes it difficult for fans to go all-in on the process. However, it is unfair for the organization not to expect to be held accountable when failure manifests.
Murphy’s Law indicates that what can go wrong, will go wrong. When things start to falter, management should be proactive in finding ways—outside of the organization—to plug the holes so the ship doesn’t completely sink, while also not deviating from the blueprint.
To Moore’s credit, he has stayed the course in an attempt to fulfill the promises that he has made to Kansas City’s demoralized fan base, which will either buy him long-term praise or earn him an ugly exit out of town.

It is being reported that Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy could need Tommy John Surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow, becoming the second prized pitching prospect within the organization in as many seasons to require the procedure (John Lamb in 2011).
After a forgetful rookie season in 2011, Duffy had started to show signs of what scouts had been touting the last few years. His 3.90 earned run average and 28 strikeouts are first on the team among starting pitchers.
This is a devastating blow to a team that has relied heavily on its youth to bring the franchise back to prominence.
Starting pitching has always been the Achilles' heel for the Royals and this year is no different. However, in light of the injuries to Duffy and Lamb, the slow development of Mike Montgomery, Jake Odorizzi not quite being ready and the failed Luke Hochevar experiment—although Ned Yost and Dayton Moore will find every excuse in the books to defend it—if this organization legitimately desires to win during this window of opportunity then owner David Glass will need to open his wallet to attract quality free-agent pitchers to Kansas City.
Bruce Chen and a handful of others have done a decent job, but this city deserves more than tip-toeing the south side of the mediocrity line. And with the injuries and the minor league arms not quite able to keep up with the bats and their arrival to Kansas City, it signals a different kind of panic than before.
Having systematically sprinkled the talented youth onto the big league roster over the last few seasons, it is now time for Moore to demand that ownership give him the green light to top it off with veterans who can anchor what is viewed to be the missing piece to the puzzle: the starting rotation.
If not, as a downtrodden fanbase began to see a tiny glimmer of the end of this cycle of futility, it is possible that it may just be entering the home stretch of how bad it could really get in Kansas City as it relates to baseball and the Royals.

Ned Yost met with the media this afternoon and a hot topic of discussion was Eric Hosmer. A question was asked about Hosmer’s solid defense at first base and Yost immediately mentioned his offense as well, “Hosmer is swinging the bat very well and he’s not getting much to show for it. This kid has probably got 17, 18 lineouts which is the difference between hitting .170 and .450. He is very unlucky right now.” Hosmer found two holes last night against Texas for a single and a double, so hopefully his luck is turning for the good. Yost discussed how Hosmer has an advanced maturity for his age and he has not let this rough patch freak him out. “He has done a really good job controlling his emotions and not losing his confidence in his abilities,” said Yost.
Jarrod Dyson is starting to understand what his tools are and use them to the best of his ability and he is doing a great job with it in the leadoff spot getting on base and scoring runs. “There is a huge difference in his approach and the way he is playing the game now compared to any time he came up last year,” said Yost.
The Royals played very well in Chicago, but they lost the first game 5-0. Yost said, “I don’t know why we haven’t played good after an off-day or rainout.” After that loss they came back the next day and won 5-0 and then played a great game on Sunday. Everybody felt good going into Texas knowing they were gaining some momentum and that carried over into a two-game sweep over the Rangers.

Derek Jeter was overrated, which isn't all that shocking considering he was a New York Yankee and he won a lot of baseball games.
Yankee players that win a lot have been overrated for years, from Yogi Berra to Roger Maris to Whitey Ford and Jorge Posada.
Derek Jeter was no different. He hit over .300 and won the World Series four times in his first five full seasons in the Bronx. He was great. But because he was a Yankee, he was perceived as better than that.
The shortstop has never led the Majors in batting average or RBI or home runs or stolen bases. He topped the Hits list in 1999 with 219, but that's it. And it was probably sometime a few years later, when the World Series trophies stopped falling out of trees, that Jeter's perceived greatness was scaled down.
If there was ever a perfect example of the phrase, "so overrated you're underrated" it's Derek Sanderson Jeter from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Because while Yankee diehards glorified their leader and most everyone else disliked him for nothing more than wearing a Yankee jersey, Jeter just showed up and hit. And because of that, he is quietly -as quietly as a New York Yankee can, I guess- setting his sights on a number deemed more or less untouchable by Baseball fans.

That's because, while his hits had dipped down the last two seasons-179 and 162- Jeter is hitting .366 with five home runs and leading the Majors with 56 hits. He became the first Yankee ever to collect 50 hits in his team's first 30 games, and the 4,000 hit mark isn't (very) far off. He's currently 17th all-time on the Hits list with 3144 and is on pace for 256 this season.
A safe number would be 210.
That would leave Jeter 702 hits shy of No. 4,000 and a seat alongside just Ty Cobb and Pete Rose . If he could average 179 hits -something he's done 14 times- for the following four seasons, hit No. 4,000 would come near the end of 2016 at the age of 42.
Is it probable that Jeter maintains a steady pace until the age of 42? No. Players get old quick, and Jeter's one-year resurgence is still young and doesn't completely mask the previous two seasons in which his results tailed off.
But it's time to start bracing for a media extravaganza on Sept. 23, 2016.

This team is hopeless. Dayton Moore has run it into the ground. The Glass family hasn’t been willing to spend to keep pace with the big-market clubs.
Ned Yost is a terrible in-game strategist. He mismanages his bullpen. “The Process” is just a myth. Our so-called “best farm system in baseball” means nothing at the big league level.
Something about our development of young pitchers is causing them to break down. Luke Hochevar is the new Kyle Davies. We should never have given Salvador Perez such a big contract at 21 years of age. Johnny Giavotella should have made the big league roster instead of Chris Getz.
I heard every one of these opinions expressed ad nauseum during the month of April. Particularly on talk radio, but also in the traditional newspapers and of course in the Internet blogosphere, Everyone piled on like a rugby scrum.
Now the team is the hottest in baseball, as of May 16, having knocked off the mighty Texas Rangers in back-to-back road contests.
I know this Royals team isn’t among the league’s best. But they are winning at that pace at the moment, and they’re steadily climbing back toward .500.
The negativity rubbed me wrong in April, and I couldn’t be happier that the Royals are vindicating themselves now.
Sure, the 12-game losing bender made me sick. But the rats fleeing the ship made me even sicker.
Think about it. Which team could have survived losing their ace reliever, centerfielder, catcher and a key starting pitcher (Felipe Paulino) at the start of a season?
Could the Rangers? They haven’t made a roster move yet. Take four key pieces from that team and see how good they would be.
Could the Yankees? They’ve limped along after the loss of Mariano Rivera.
I’m not trying to make excuses for the 12-game bender. But just as we’re probably not as good as our record in May would indicate, we probably weren’t as bad as we played in April.
I’m trying to not get too high over winning 12 of our last 18. But I don’t appreciate everyone who jumped off the bandwagon when we were 3-14. Maybe they didn’t belong on the bandwagon after all. Just stay off and leave room for the real fans.

We are still in the month of may, meaning playoff hopes ares still alive. Is there a free agent that could help the royals? Lets take a look.
1: This might shock you but, Roy Oswalt is still a free agent. Yes. the former all-star pitcher who had a 3.69 ERA last year, and played 139 innings. He made 16 million dollars last year, you could expect his salary to fall to 7-9 million per year meaning he could be a steal if we pick him up for like a 2 year 14 million dollar deal. While he is 34 years old he still has years of throwing left in that arm. He could be the ace the Royals need in the rotation.
2: Another pitcher the Royals could sign is Scott Kazmir. While he struggled last year with a 5.94 ERA, don't let the stats fool you he is still a very good pitcher. With a career average ERA of 4.17 and a record of 66 wins, and 61 losses. He seems like the perfect replacement for Danny Duffy or a good pitcher to keep on the roster as insurance, in case another pitcher goes down. While he last made 12 million a year for the Angels, he could be picked up for as low as 4-5 million a year.
3: Its no secret that Kansas City lacks catching depth. Meaning that signing Ramon Castro, would be perfect for the Royals, giving the pitchers a better game manager and young players like Manny Pina and Salvador Perez somebody to learn from. Ramon Castro is also a great defender, having sported a .992 fielding percentage in 20 starts. He probably could be picked up for a one year, $400,000 contract.
4: If you are feeling tied of Yuniesky Betancourt, I have a man for you. His name is Alex Cora. He is a veteran at age 36, he did struggle last year with only a .224 batting average, but he still plays good defense. He could be a cheap backup player for the Royals.
5: With Lorenzo Cain on the DL, and Mitch Maier having the arm strength of a toddler. Kansas City needs a veteran, to play center field. His name is Aaron Rowand. While he struggled last year with a .233 batting average he can still play defense reliably. Having a .1000 fielding percent when he played center field in 2011. While he wouldn't be my first option, he still is an upgrade over Mitch Maier.

The Chicago Cubs' bullpen lost another game when Rafael Dolis surrendered the go-ahead run to the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth inning of a 7-6 loss on May 15, 2012. With a 15-21 record, the Cubs trail the Cardinals by six games in the National League Central. Kansas City Royals prospects 3B/OF Wil Myers and SP Jake Odorizzi have been promoted from Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals to Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers.
Wil Myers, drafted #91 overall (3rd round) in the 2009 draft, of has been absolutely on fire with the Naturals, batting .343 with 13 home runs and a 1.146 OPS. Not only is Myers hitting well, but the converted catcher to right fielder has also played center field and is now working the hot-corner.
It is obvious the Royals trust the athleticism of Myers and his ability to learn multiple positions in every attempt to expedite his promotion through the ranks.
Jake Odorizzi was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers with Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar in the Zack Greinke trade. Odorizzi is 4-2 in 7 starts with the Naturals with a 3.32 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 38 innings and a .974WHIP and 4.7 K/BB.
Once thought to be a "throw-in" piece in the Greinke deal, by many fans, Odorizzi is looking as if he may become the biggest success in the group.
Wil Myers is gaining more and more versatility in the field, but where does he fit into the Royals roster in 2012? Most likely, he does not.
CF Lorenzo Cain, is expected back from injury before the All-Star break, at very latest and Jarrod Dyson is filling in better than expected in his absence. RF Jeff Francoeur is locked up through 2013. LF Alex Gordon just signed an extension before 2012. 3B Mike Moustakas is in his first full season with the Royals. DH Billy Butler is having, arguably, the best season of his career.
The only way I see Wil Myers making it to the Kansas City Royals in 2012 is if, and this is a VERY BIG IF, Eric Hosmer digresses even more at the plate, then is sent down to Omaha. In this scenario, I believe the Royals would ask Myers to learn 1B while in Omaha.
Most likely, Myers gets the call in mid-2013... and Frenchy is dealt.
Jake Odorizzi has a much clearer path to the MLB. Throw well, dominate, be starting for the Royals before 2012 is out. The Royals need starting pitching and Odorizzi is an elite prospect.

The Royals today announced that the organization has promoted outfielder Wil Myers and right-handed pitcher Jake Odorizzi from Northwest Arkansas (AA) to Omaha (AAA). Both players will join the Storm Chasers when they return to action tomorrow to host Tacoma at Werner Park.
Myers, 21, has dominated the Texas League from the outset, departing the league as its leader in hitting (.343), slugging (.731), OPS (1.146), tied for the top spot in total bases (98), ranking tied for second in home runs (13) and third in RBI (37). He has homered six times in his last 10 games. Myers was Kansas City’s third round pick in the 2009 First Year Player Draft and got his first taste of big league spring training as a non-roster invitee earlier this year.
Odorizzi, 22, leaves Northwest Arkansas with a 4-2 record and 3.32 ERA in seven starts. He is second in the Texas League in strikeouts (47) and fourth in WHIP (0.97). He has been most impressive over his last four starts, going 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA, allowing six earned runs in 27.1 innings for a 1.98 ERA while fanning 33. Odorizzi has limited opposing hitters to a collective .191 batting average through his first seven assignments. He was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on December 19, 2010, along with Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar and Jeremy Jeffress in exchange for Zack Greinke and Yuniesky Betancourt. Odorizzi was the 32nd overall pick of the Brewers in the 2008 First Year Player Draft and he also had a taste of big league spring training this year as a non-roster invitee.

SPRINGDALE, AR - The Naturals’ parent club, the Kansas City Royals announced a pair transactions on Wednesday morning affecting the Northwest Arkansas roster. Outfielder Wil Myers has been promoted to Triple-A Omaha, and outfielder Nick Van Stratten has been transferred from Extended Spring Training to Northwest Arkansas.
Myers spent the early part of the 2012 season terrorizing Texas League pitching. At the time of his promotion he ranked tops in the league in hitting at .343, extra base hits (25), and runs scored with (32) second in home runs (13), third in RBI (30), second in hits (46).
The outfielder leaves Northwest Arkansas with 21 career home runs with the Naturals. The 21 home runs tie him for the sixth most in Naturals history with Corey Smith, and current Kansas City Royal Mike Moustaksas. Myers was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the third round of the 2009 draft.
Odorizzi, 22, leaves Northwest Arkansas with a 4-2 record and 3.32 ERA in seven starts. He is second in the Texas League in strikeouts (47) and fourth in WHIP (0.97). Van Stratten spent parts of the last two seasons in Northwest Arkansas appearing in 68 games in 2011, and 86 games in 2010. The outfielder’s best year in Double-A came in 2010 when he hit .262 with two home runs and 34 RBI for the Naturals. Van Stratten was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the tenth round of the 2006 draft.
Van Stratten will wear number nine for the Naturals, and there is another number change to report as Ethan Hollingsworth will now wear number 36. Following the transaction, the Naturals’ roster is at the Texas League limit of 25 active players.

SPRINGDALE, AR - The Naturals’ parent club, the Kansas City Royals announced a pair transactions on Wednesday morning affecting the Northwest Arkansas roster. Outfielder Wil Myers has been promoted to Triple-A Omaha, and outfielder Nick Van Stratten has been transferred from Extended Spring Training to Northwest Arkansas.
Myers spent the early part of the 2012 season terrorizing Texas League pitching. At the time of his promotion he ranked tops in the league in hitting at .343, extra base hits (25), and runs scored with (32) second in home runs (13), third in RBI (30), second in hits (46).
The outfielder leaves Northwest Arkansas with 21 career home runs with the Naturals. The 21 home runs tie him for the sixth most in Naturals history with Corey Smith, and current Kansas City Royal Mike Moustaksas. Myers was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the third round of the 2009 draft.
