Why it's important: While a midseason Big Game against Bay Area rival Stanford would be the obvious choice -- particularly one in newly remodeled Memorial Stadium -- we're going to be contrarian.

For so long, it was never an issue. Cal players just didn’t do much in the NFL. Sure, there were occasional exceptions. Your Doug Briens, your Joe Kapps, your Todd Steussies. But they were the rare exceptions, and there never seemed to be more than a few at a time. And of those few who made it to the NFL, a bona fide pro bowler was even rarer.
But since Tedford’s arrival, it’s become increasingly clear each year: Being a Cal fan and a 49er fan at the same time is hard. Amongst the highlights:
With the #1 pick in the draft, the

Cal isn’t going to make the playoffs. That leaves us in a weird spot. We can't really talk about title races and playoff chances, but it’s a little too soon for end of season recaps and analysis. All that’s left is to play out the string.
For Cal fans, that means playing the bitter role of spoiler. But if ever there were two teams to spoil, it would be UCLA and Stanford. The Bruins come to Evans Diamond while Stanford will host the Bears at Sunken Diamond. It would probably be fair to describe the Bruins and Cardinals as the two most talented teams in the Pac-12, which means taking a game or two will be exceedingly difficult. But weirder things have happened, and it would be pretty sweet if Cal could

California is the lifeblood of Pac-12 recruiting. Sure, coaches talk about putting up fences in their backyards and keeping their state's elite talent within. But the majority of the top-notch players from the conference hail from the Golden State -- Northern, Southern and everywhere in between.
So it was an interesting read in SI to see that the bulk of top-rated players in the state are holding out before making a commitment. Bravo. It would be nice to see players make their commitment after some careful consideration and then stick with it.

Cal has earned a reputation for bringing in top talent but never really being able to win with it and the fact that they didn't win more games with this huge haul that they brought in with the 2005 class is very supportive evidence for that argument. Jackson was one of the most explosive players in recent conference history and Alualu, Thompson, Follett and Bishop were All-Conference stalwarts.

Hal Bedsole had 82 catches for 1,717 yards and 20 touchdowns -- for his career. Not exactly gaudy numbers by today's standards, but in the early '60s, those kind of stats were special. Also unusual was his size -- 6-foot-5, 221-pounds -- rare dimensions for a split end at the time. By today's standards, he'd be considered near prototypical.
In 1962, he set the school records for a single season in receptions (33), touchdowns (11) and yards (827).
