Seattle guard Adams appears one step closer to joining KU

Well, here’s some welcome recruiting news for Kansas.

Anrio Adams, a 6-3 shooting guard from Seattle, announced Wednesday on his Twitter account that he had achieved the necessary test scores to qualify for KU. Adams, ranked as the 98th-best player in the nation by Rivals.com, committed to KU last November, but his future was on hold as he waited to boost his composite standardized test scores.

Adams, who hails from the same Rainier Beach High School that produced former Jayhawks C.J. Giles and Rodrick Stewart, is expected to arrive on campus in late June. For now, he joins four other official members of the Jayhawks’ 2012 class: Perry Ellis, a 6-foot-8 forward from Wichita; Zach Peters, a 6-foot-9 forward from Plano, Texas; Landen Lucas, a 6-foot-8 forward from Portland, Ore; and Andrew White, a 6-foot-6 swingman from Chester, Va.

Guard Ben McLemore and forward Jamari Traylor will also be classified as freshmen after sitting out last season as partial qualifiers.

So what kind of impact could Adams have? Well, it’s probably safe to call Ellis, a McDonalds All-American from Wichita Heights, the crown jewel of the class. But Adams may have the opportunity to contribute in a backcourt that’s lacking in experienced ballhandlers. Senior guard Elijah Johnson and sophomore guard Naadir Tharpe are the only returning players that have played point guard at the college level.

ESPN's K.C. Joyner has ranked his top quarterback-receiver tandems in the SEC going into the 2012 season, and his choice for No. 1 is going to surprise a lot of people. He has Vanderbilt's Jordan Rodgers and Jordan Matthews at the top of his list. In choosing his top tandems, Joyner used a list of metrics from the 2011 season that detailed such things as how the combo fared in short pass yards per attempt, vertical yards per attempt and overall yards per attempt.

Nick Saban's recruiting roll continued Wednesday, as ESPN 150 quarterback Cooper Bateman (Salt Lake City/Cottonwood) committed to the Crimson Tide. Bateman, the sixth-ranked quarterback in the 2013 class, chose Alabama over Auburn, Florida, LSU and Washington and claimed over 50 offers. "The campus was awesome," Bateman told ESPN.com's TideNation. "It was probably my favorite campus. It's gorgeous out there.

Missouri Valley Conference will be host for NCAA Tournament games at Sprint Center

We already knew the Sprint Center would have NCAA Tournament second- and third-round games (round of 64 and 32) in March, but the event didn't have a host.

Now we do. It's the Missouri Valley Conference, which is based in St. Louis and plays its basketball tournament there at the Scottrade Center.

Usually the Big 12 would serve as host for NCAA games at the Sprint Center but it is already host for the South Regional semifinals and final, which will be at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. So that left Sprint Center's games, which coincide with the 75th anniversary of the NCAA Tournament, without a host.

When coach Hugh Freeze arrived last December, he says the jungle was as thick as ever and it didn’t look like his new team was ready to cut its way out. That was until Freeze offered a solution: his “Journey.” He told players that he didn’t know how long it would take for them to make it out or find some sort of salvation, but if they followed him, they’d find the light.

Missouri Football: Meet David Yost, Offensive Coordinator of the Tigers

Every Monday, The SEC Blog will feature an assistant coach in the SEC. This week, we take a look at Missouri offensive coordinator David Yost.

 

Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel gets all of the publicity for the success of the Tiger offense, but offensive coordinator David Yost has plenty to do with the offense as well.

Yost took over as offensive coordinator before the 2009 season, but has been with Pinkel as an assistant since 1996, when the two were at Toledo. His spread offense finished 12th in the nation in total offense in 2011 (475.5 YPG) and finished ninth in rushing (243.46 YPG). 

He has been Missouri's quarterback coach since 2001 and has been an integral part of the success of quarterbacks Brad Smith, Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert.

In addition to his offensive coordinator and quarterback coach responsibilities, Yost also serves as Missouri's recruiting coordinator. He has served in that capacity for Pinkel since 1997 while the two were at Toledo.

Under his watch, the Tigers landed wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham in 2012, the nation's No. 2 overall recruit, according to 247Sports.com.

The impact of Missouri's move to the SEC is already being felt in Columbia. Yost's 2013 class is currently ranked No. 11 by 247Sports.com, and Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star writes that the move to the SEC has affected Missouri's recruiting in a good way.

Will Yost, Pinkel and Co. have to adjust a bit to the speed of SEC defenses? Absolutely. But they're also recruiting better, and that's a direct reflection on Yost's ability as a recruiting coordinator.

He may not be known in SEC circles, but David Yost has the offensive pieces this season to make a big impact in the SEC East. That, coupled with his prowess on the recruiting trail, should translate into long-term success for the Missouri offense in the SEC.

A look at the SEC's biggest spenders

USA Today's annual study is out on who in college athletics makes the most money and who spends the most money. Not surprisingly, of the 10 biggest spenders, four are from the SEC: No. 4 Florida ($107.1 million), No. 5 Alabama ($105.1 million), No. 7 Auburn ($100.5 million) and No. 8 Tennessee ($97.6 million). According to the 2011 figures gathered by USA Today, 13 of the 14 SEC schools operated in the black, meaning they generated enough money to cover all of their athletic expenses.

Tennessee will open the season against North Carolina State on Friday, Aug. 31 in a 7:30 p.m. game that will be televised by ESPNU, while Auburn will face Clemson the next day, Sept. 1, in a 7 p.m. game that will be televised by ESPN. The two ACC vs. SEC matchups are part of the 2012 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game weekend at the Georgia Dome. "Over these incredible 48 hours, all eyes will be on Atlanta as we open the season like never before with our first-ever double hosting of Chick-fil-A Kickoff Games," said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO.

COLUMBIA | Safety Tavon Bolden has been dismissed from the football team for disciplinary reasons, according to team spokesman Chad Moller.

BoldenThe decision brings a disappointing end to an up-and-down career for Bolden, who was named Missouri's most improved player at safety during spring practice last year but was kicked off the team right before the season for academic reasons. He rejoined the team later in the year, but didn't appear in a game.

Bolden, a redshirt junior from Houston, continued to work to get back in the staff's good graces, as he entered the spring third on the depth chart at strong safety behind Kenronte Walker and Daniel Easterly. However, it now appears he simply didn't do enough, as his tenure at Missouri is now over.

He finishes his Missouri career with 14 tackles in 13 games, all played in 2010.

KU Notebook: Chicago guard Doyle to wait for now

Milton Doyle, a senior guard from Chicago, concluded an official two-day campus visit to Kansas on Tuesday, but he returned home with his future still unknown.

Doyle’s mom, Lisa Green, said that while the KU coaches had expressed interest in her son, it became apparent Tuesday that the staff preferred that Doyle wait.

KU currently has just one available scholarship, while another could come open if forward Justin Wesley returns to walk-on status. Kansas is reported to be waiting on South Carolina transfer forward Damontre Harris, while Anrio Adams, a guard from Seattle, has verbally committed but has yet to sign a letter-of-intent.

Green called KU her son’s dream school; he grew up watching KU on television while also following former KU guard Sherron Collins, another Chicago native. But for now, Doyle will likely return home and begin to weigh his options.

Doyle was mostly an unknown entity outside Chicago until the last month. A wrist injury limited him during his junior season at Marshall High in Chicago, and he stayed under-the-radar after he verbally committed to Florida International last fall. But that all changed when FIU coach Isiah Thomas was fired in April and Doyle re-opened his recruitment. 

** ANOTHER STREAK: KU led its conference in home attendance for the 26^th straight season, according to figures recently released by the NCAA. The Jayhawks averaged 16,445 fans per home game, a number boosted by one home game at the Sprint Center. The average ranked 10th nationally. The Jayhawks also ran their streak of consecutive home sellouts to 180, a run that began with the second game of the 2001-02 season.

Missouri softball rakes in Big 12 yearly awards

The No. 9 Missouri softball team (43-12, 17-7 Big 12 Conference) took home several Big 12 yearly awards on Tuesday afternoon, with redshirt junior pitcher Chelsea Thomas winning Pitcher of the Year and freshman infielder Corrin Genovese awarded Defensive Player of the Year.

Thomas was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season. She led the Big 12 with a 1.08 ERA and boasted an 11-6 record while recording 120 strikeouts en route to becoming the program’s all-time leader in strikeouts. The league averaged .168 against her and she allowed only two home runs in conference play. She led the league with three saves.

Genovese notched Defensive Player of the Year in her first season in Columbia. This is the second straight season and second time in Missouri history for a Tiger to win the award. Genovese started the season playing second and third base before ultimately landing the starting shortstop role. She made just two errors in 90 chances during conference play, maintaining a .978 fielding percentage.

Alongside Thomas, senior outfielder Ashley Fleming and sophomore Mackenzie Sykes earned First Team All-Big 12 honors.

Fleming was awarded First Team All-Conference for the second consecutive season. This season, she blasted three doubles and seven home runs with a .333 batting average.

Sykes came off of the bench this season and was clutch for the Tigers offensively. She also hit .333 with nine runs scored, eight driven in and a pair of home runs.

Making the Second Team All-Big 12 were junior outfielder Nicole Hudson, junior catcher Jenna Marston and freshman first baseman Kelsea Roth.

Hudson and Marston both hit .254 in conference play this year. Hudson roped four home runs and drove in 12 while Marston scored 24 runs on 20 drawn walks. Roth hit .270 in the Big 12 and blasted three home runs and four doubles.

With these awards, coach Ehren Earleywine now has 33 All-Big 12 selections since taking over at Missouri in 2007.

With two new teams added to the mix, let’s take a look at what we learned in the SEC this spring: 1. Quarterback Central: The SEC gets a bad rap for not piling up Xbox-like passing yards, and granted, it wasn’t a great year for quarterbacks in the league last season. But did you know that an SEC quarterback has been taken in the first round of the NFL draft eight of the last 10 years? And that includes four quarterbacks taken No. 1 overall.

Does anybody really remember spring awards? They don’t hand out any hardware for what goes on in March and April. Nonetheless, we’re still going to honor the highs and the lows of the spring in the SEC: Best performance: How sharp was Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson this spring? The Hogs’ offensive coordinator, Paul Petrino, said if anybody had a better spring than Wilson, then he was Superman. In four major scrimmages, including Arkansas’ spring game, Wilson threw 16 touchdown passes and completed 75.

Thomas earns season's final Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

Redshirt junior pitcher Chelsea Thomas took home the final Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week award for the 2012 season, as announced Monday. The designation is her fourth this year and 12th of her career.

Thomas appeared in all three games of the Oklahoma State series at University Field last weekend, where she went 2-0, sweeping the Cowgirls and helping secure second place in the Big 12 for her team.

In game one, she threw her 11th no-hitter in her Tiger career, striking out 12 and allowing just two walks in seven innings. Out of her 11 no-hitters, four of them are perfect games, which is by far the most of any other Missouri pitcher.

The Saturday game allowed Thomas to relieve freshman pitcher Bailey Erwin and earn her third save of the season, striking out five batters while allowing two walks in 2.1 innings.

On Sunday, Thomas pitched all ten innings while handing out 13 strikeouts and scattering five hits. Her ninth strikeout made her Missouri’s all-time strikeouts leader, breaking the record set by Teresa Wilson 29 years ago.

Thomas now boasts 898 strikeouts in her career with a 23-7 record on the season and a 1.07 ERA.

Thomas and the No. 9-seeded Tigers are one of 16 to host an NCAA Regional in the NCAA Tournament Bracket. They will open play on Friday evening at University Field against the Illinois State Redbirds beginnings at 6:30 p.m.
