Mayor: Berlin airport opening delayed further

BERLIN (AP) — Berlin's mayor says the planned opening of the city's €2.5 billion ($3.18 billion) new airport must be further delayed until spring of next year.
Klaus Wowereit said Thursday the airport's board has set March 17 as the new opening date.
The announcement came about a week after officials had to cancel the new airport's planned opening on June 3 because of fire safety issues.
The Willy Brandt Airport was meant to replace Berlin's two aging airports Tegel and Schoenefeld, wrapping up another chapter in the reunification of the formerly divided city.
The delay — an embarassment for Germany's planners — will likely lead to cost overruns and liability claims from airlines.
The opening had first been delayed from late 2011 to June 2012.
