The Oregon State men’s golf team is seeded ninth in the 13-team regional at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif., starting today through Saturday.
The Beavers need a top-five finish to advance to the NCAA Championships. California, Stanford and San Diego State are the top three seeds.
No. 4-8 are from the Southeast and Midwest and have never been to the course. So today’s round will be used to figure out what to do. OSU has been to the course three times in the last 13 months.
A fast start could carry the Beavers into the next round of the postseason.
“Things are going really well and the guys are working hard,” coach Jon Reehoorn said. “When I look at the field, I feel good about how things shook out for us. Four-eight will have to figure out what to do, while we know what to expect on the course.”

Nick Chianello transfered from Portland.
Check out my story on the golf team in today’s GT. I catch up with juniors Nick Chianello and Matt Rawitzer. They are rare four-year college transfers who helped the Beavers this year. They have interesting stories as to why they are in Corvallis.
“I’m pretty excited, coming off our good finish in the Pac-12s,” Chianello said. “The team vibe is good. We are comfortable. We played the course before. It’s a huge equalizer. They (teams No. 4-8) may have played well in a few more tournaments than us, but we’ll know what kind of shot to hit. They’ll play a guessing game for a while.”
“I think the team is playing pretty well,” Rawitzer said. “Technically, we have to upset some teams. In golf, those rankings can be misleading. Unlike baseball and football, the 50th team, there isn’t a big discrepancy with No. 1. We are just as good as the teams there. We don’t have to do anything special. We just have to play solid golf. The rest will take care of itself. We’ll be in the top five in the end.”
