Carson Desrosiers Committment Roundup
Source: Friarblog by dave@friarblog
Yesterday afternoon, multiple reports surfaced confirmed that center Carson Desrosiers would be transferring to the Providence Friars. Coming over from Wake Forest, the big man would be eligible to play for the 2013-2014 season.
Here is what was said around the web.
GoLocalProv: Friars finally get a big man – more on the way?
Desrosiers said via Twitter earlier Tuesday “Excited to be a new member of Friartown! Go Friars.” He also told zagsblog.com via text message that he will “bring a different look at the five man than what PC has had in the past,” Desrosiers said. “I will be able to spread the floor to open up the paint as well as post up. I will be a presence in the paint defensively.”
Friar Basketball: 13 Things You Should Know about Carson Desrosiers
Desrosiers is a skilled seven footer with range beyond the three point arc and better than average ball skills for a big man. Listed at 210 pounds heading into college, Wake Forest had him at 240 this past season. Like many high school seven footers, Desrosiers was a skinny kid coming out of school, but what made him unique was a strong lower body. He’ll have to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, which may benefit him in the long term as he’ll have a full season to work on not only his game, but his strength. He’s a good, not great, shooter and a solid passer for a player his size. The hope is that he can round into a more versatile big, one capable of being a presence on the glass with additional strength training. Put simply, Providence is happy to take a seven footer with two years of ACC experience and his skill set. He’s a face-up big man, not the traditional low post banger, who will have two years of eligibility at PC.
Woonsocket Call: McGair: Friars look to max every ounce out of Desrosiers’ 7-foot frame
As the newest Providence College player at Ed Cooley’s disposal, Desrosiers automatically adds credibility to a Friar frontline that is crying out for size. In compliance with NCAA transfer rules, Desrosiers will sit out the 2012-13 season, which should hopefully allow him ample time to study and comprehend Cooley’s defensive philosophy.
As ESPN.com senior basketball recruiting analyst Dave Telep noted in an email, “Desrosiers has two things that work: size and skill. I think if he comes in and gives (the Friars) good effort on the glass he should be a starter in the frontcourt. This next opportunity will be successful if he commits to getting on the glass.”
College Basketball Talk: Providence lands Wake Forest transfer Carson Desrosiers
Perhaps more important for Providence is that Cooley has landed another local star. Dunn is a native of New London, CT, while Ledo is from Providence. Desrosiers is from Windham, NH. Given that Cooley is, himself, a local product — he’s a native of Providence — it gives some hope to Friar fans.
ESPN Boston: Carson Desrosiers transferring to PC
The 6-foot-11 Windham, N.H. resident led Central Catholic to MIAA Division 1 state championships in 2008 and 2010, before moving on to Wake Forest. In two seasons in Winston-Salem, he averaged 4.4 points and 3.7 rebounds, with 38 starts, and totaled 112 blocks. His 52 blocks in 2010-11 were the most by a Wake freshman since Tim Duncan.

Source: Friarblog by Daniel "The Warrior Friar" James
Dr. Dre’s Detox album. Half-Life 3. Sin City 2. These are just a few of the sequels that will probably never come to pass. But after much delay, part two of Transfer Talk will (thankfully) not be in the company of these mythos.

Hopefully it won't be in the company of this P.O.S. either.
A lot has happened since part one. Bryce Cotton was rumored to be leaving the Friars thanks to some dumb-dumb with a keyboard. Then we supposedly lost Lee Goldsbrough. Then a potential transfer committed to Maryland. Then we lost out on Orlando Sanchez to St. John’s. Then I managed to cause uproar over the title of an article (and in the process wrote one of the most successful articles in the history of both Scout Friars and my budding journalism career). But that’s all in the past because reinforcements are on the way and here, now, in part two, we’re talking about them!
Ian Baker, PG
Freshman in the 2012 class, committed to Providence
The Overview: Ian Baker is an interesting addition for the Friars, and I say that for a couple reasons. Originally Baker was a target of the Friars before they picked up McDonald’s A.A. Kris Dunn, resulting in Baker to commit to South Carolina. When South Carolina made a coaching change, Baker decommitted and the Friars were back on the trail for Baker because many believed (at the time) that Vincent Council was leaving for Europe and we’d need to compensate depth for the loss of the senior general. With Council still in fold and Baker still coming, the Friars are adding essentially a third point guard to the roster.
That said, this move is great on Ed Cooley’s part. Adding a third point guard does a couple of things for the roster. It allows us to run a very fast offensive backcourt without as much worry for fatigue because the additional depth at the point allows longer rest in games and, over time, will keep the team from being exhausted – much like what we went through this past season. Secondly, it will hold guards accountable for their actions on court. Last season we saw mistakes being made but nothing could be done in terms of in game accountability because we had no depth to help send a message. With the addition of Baker accountability in game becomes a reality. And lastly it allows flexability in positions on the court. Baker allows Dunn to move to the two at times and Ledo to move to the three without compromising depth at the PG. Where does this lead us back to? Say it with me – rest and accountability!
Carson Desrosiers, C
Transfer from Wake Forest, 2 years eligibility, committed to Providence
The Overview: Carson Desrosiers is a 7 ft center. Sold.
Seriously though, this is a great transfer pick up. In 2010-2011 Desrosiers had the most blocks in a single season since 1994 (and second most blocks for a freshman in school history, falling behind a young player by the name of Tim Duncan). In two seasons he tied for 11th most blocked shots in Wake Forest history. He was the 64th overall high school prospect according to ESPN (5th best center) and 41st overall by Scout (9th best center). He’s someone who can open up the paint and, more importantly, he’s a desperately needed piece for the front court. The best part? He wants to be a Friar! On Twitter he was all

@CarsonD33Carson Desrosiers
And so I was all

And it was excellent.
Matt Willms, C
Freshman in the 2012 class, not yet committed
The Overview: Matt Willms, although currently uncommitted, would be a perfect cap to the 2012 class for several reasons. First, he’s a big man the Friars desperately need for next year (Desrosiers won’t be eligible to play in 2012-2013 due to transfer rules). Second, he not only has a basketball background, but a hockey one as well. “But Warrior, Leaman isn’t recruiting him, Cooley is!” Correct, but if you’re unfamiliar with the game of hockey they tend to knock each other around on the ice. A lot. A hockey background says what? This kid is a bruiser who won’t be afraid of tussling in the paint with other big men, something the Friars need. Third, he’s a gym rat. Reports say this kid lives in the gym and is constantly at work, the same way Sharaud Curry, Bryce Cotton, and Ryan Gomes would get at it to improve their games. That alone is enough to sell me.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Much like the upside with Baker, consider the following: we now have two frontcourt players in practice who will push other frontcourt players to improve. Ed Cooley respects the guys who want to play at Providence and will go above and beyond to improve their game and contribute to the team. Willms’ ethic could spark a reaction in upperclassmen frontcourt players (looking at you Kofane) where they’re pushing themselves more because their minutes are being threatened by a player who’s willing to put in the extra work. Everyone improves from that. The Friars thereby improve in the frontcourt. This is possibly the best part of adding a player like Willms (and pretty much everyone else mentioned in this article) is that they’re going to work their asses off and push the players we already have to nut up or shut up, causing a rapid improvement in the team if all goes according to plan. This addition could mean improvement not only because of the talent we bring in, but what that talent does to the motor for the rest of the team. Here’s hoping that Matt Willms decides to commit to the Friars!
