Sometimes in the NFL, you can get a pass, but that’s only if you are a star or a player with tremendous upside. Josh Portis has neither of those things. After getting pulled over under suspicion of being drunk while driving, the Seahawks have decided to part ways with the 2011 undrafted free agent out of California (PA).
This move likely solidifies that Brady Quinn is entrenched as the #2 with Jerrod Johnson as the #3.

Seattle Seahawks Running Back Breakdown: Evaluation and Depth Chart Analysis

When it comes to the running back position, the Seattle Seahawks have one of the best groups in the NFL. Granted, running back can be a position that has some extreme ups and downs. If a star running back goes down, it can drastically change the effectiveness of the offense.
The emergence of Russell Wilson as an effective quarterback has certainly given the Seahawks more options on offense, but this is still a running team. You could even argue that Wilson’s running ability gives them another ground option out of the backfield.
Assuming that players stay healthy, Seattle

It's just about impossible to argue the fact that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had a phenomenal rookie campaign. He completed 64.1% of his passes for a total of 3,118 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions. He finished the season with an outstanding 100.0 quarterback rating, and led his team to the second round of the playoffs.
However, Wilson was even more impressive than one can realize simply by looking at the season statistics. For the first half of the season, Wilson - a third-round pick - was put in a situation where he wasn't asked to do too much. The Seahawks wanted to play it safe with their young quarterback, and not put him in a position in which he was likely to fail, but after Wilson impressed through eight games, head coach Pete Carroll decided to open up the playbook for the rookie sensation.
During the second half of the season, Wilson racked up more than half of his passing yards (1,652), posted a ridiculous touchdown to interception ra...

Quarterback Josh Portis has been released, the team announced today.
Portis signed with the Seahawks as rookie free agent in 2011, when he made the 53-man roster as the No. 3 QB. He was inactive for 15 games and the backup in one because then-starter Tarvaris Jackson was injured. Portis was released from the practice squad last November and re-signed with Seattle on April 3.
Portis had been competing for a backup spot behind starter Russell Wilson with Brady Quinn, a former first-round draft choice by the Browns who was signed in free agency last month; and Jerrod Johnson, who also was signed last month.

Current NFL rules prevent teams from using computers during games to assist with calling plays or anything else related to the game on the field. That will change in 2014 under a new partnership between the NFL and Microsoft.
Much of the NFL's news release on the partnership includes information about real-time fantasy football applications through Xbox gaming systems.
This looks like a game-changer on the field as well. Computers should allow teams to more reliably consider the percentages in light of team tendencies, opponent tendencies, historical precedent or whatever information a team could find valuable.

The hypocritical nature of business in the NFL[Yardbarker: Tue 5/21 3:19 PM]
The hypocritical nature of business in the NFL
Source: Yardbarker
The NFL is a business and business by nature tends to be hypocritical. The rules are not standard; they differ from person to person and situation to situation. High value employees often are not held to the same standards of conduct as low value employees. For example, the sales rep bringing in $1 million dollars a year may not be held to the same rules as the mail room intern.
In the NFL, this is no different. The latest example comes to us from the Seattle Seahawks. On May 5, the Seahawks third string quarterback, Josh Portis, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He refused a breathalyzer and had blood drawn instead. One test measured at .092 and the other at .078. The legal limit in California is .08, so there is some room for him to fight the charge leveled against him (this is important as you will see down below). The Seahawks announced on May 21, that they have released the quarterback. While some applaud this as a zero tolerance policy by the Seahawks,...

Portis had been facing an uphill battle for a roster spot with the Seahawks' acquisitions of Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson, but reports of his play out of training camp yesterday were overwhelmingly positive. Nonetheless, Seattle evidently decided the distraction wasn't worth it.
Portis originally made the Hawks' 53-man roster in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of Cal Pennsylvania, but started out on the Practice Squad last year before being released from that mid-way through the year. We had never really heard why, but according to Dave "Softy" Mahler's radio show on Monday, Portis was

With all the talk about the Seattle Seahawks' multiple suspensions for violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy, and the allegedly undisciplined environment those suspensions appear to portray, it could be that backup quarterback Josh Portis did his former team a favor when he was arrested in suspicion of driving under the influence when he was pulled over near Seattle on May 5 . The Seahawks released Portis on Tuesday, just one day after Portis was seen alternating reps with fellow backup quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson.
Portis was traveling 80 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone, and according to the arresting officer, performed poorly in field sobriety tests. He registered .092 and .078 in two breath tests.

Seattle Seahawks John Portis who is expected to compete for the backup quarterback job, was arrested on suspicion of DUI earlier this month, and will face a court date after blood tests indicated a level above the legal limit amount, according to Philly.com.
Portis was pulled over for speeding on May 5th, and was tested with a blood alcohol level of .092, higher than Washington's limit of .08.
On the heels of another player PED violation, and the absence of running back Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks once harmonious image is taking a beating this week.
The 25-year-old had just signed a two-year contract for $480,000 a year in April.
Philly.com writes:
‘Portis could have expected to fight Johnson -- who also has never played a down in the NFL, with experience as a backup -- for a third-string spot.’
