If you watched Mike Smiths performance at the IIHF World Championships with mixed emotions, your reaction, as a Coyotes fan, was understandable.
On the one hand, it was encouraging to see Smith regain the level of play that made him one of the NHLs best players down the stretch of the 2011-12 season and in the postseason. On the flip side, it showcased his ability for a number of teams that need goaltenders or may need goaltenders ifwhen they cut ties with their current personnel.
While some wondered if Smith was taking an injury risk by playing in the tournament when his contract is set to expire on June 30, others, including Smith, saw it through another lens.
If youre worrying about injuries while playing, thats the wrong way to approach it, he said Saturday morning by phone from Stockholm, Sweden. In my situation, I had a chance to play for my country with some of the worlds best players on an international stage that I had never experienced before. I definitely gained a lot from that experience.

Chicago Blackhawks streaking again, this time on the penalty kill (Puck Daddy)
Source: Yahoo! Sports
In 2012, the Chicago Blackhawks’ penalty kill failed them in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
They gave up 4 goals on 19 chances in a loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, who entered the postseason with the 29th best power play in the NHL. The Hawks had the 27th best PK in the regular season; those struggles continues in the playoffs.
So they remedied that in the offseason, bringing in Los Angeles Kings assistant coach and penalty kill architect Jamie Kompon. After the lockout ended, they converted offensive forwards Marcus Kruger and Michael Frolik in special teams defenders.
The results were stunning: The PK provided the backbone for the Blackhawks’ 24-game streak with at least one point earned, and the team gave up the fewest power-play goals in the regular season (18) while finishing with the third-best penalty kill (87.2 percent).
In the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs … well, it’s been perfect: 20 times shorthanded, 20 kills, including a perfect 17-for-17 in Round 1 against the Minnesota Wild (17.9 percent in the regular season.

The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed forward Rob Klinkhammer to a two-year deal on Thursday. The financials of the deal were not immediately made public.
Klinkhammer joined the Coyotes last off-season via free agency and played 22 games with the main club. In those 22 games, Klinkhammer scored five goals and 11 points while averaging nearly three hits per game.
The 2013 season was the first time the undrafted 26-year old saw extended playing time as he entered the year with only 16 game of NHL expierence with two different teams (Chicago and Ottawa).

There are very few coaches that a team could hire and expect immediate positive results. The late Pat Burns was one of them. Ken Hitchcock is one of them. So is Dave Tippett, which is why his situation is one of the most fascinating of the postseason and/or off-season.
Tippett has made the playoffs in eight of 10 seasons as a head coach in the NHL. His system turned the Phoenix Coyotes into a playoff team in three of four seasons, under inconceivable conditions with the franchise’s ownership mess.
That mess has ridiculously spread into the middle of 2013. Tippett and GM Don Maloney have their contracts up this summer, and the coach struck an ominous tone in his postseason comments:
“The ownership situation has to play out before then. I’d like to stay with this group. But that being said, it just needs some stability.
"There will be a conclusion to it. Whether it’s with the ownership or my situation, there’s going to be a conclusion. There's gonna be some clarity to it one way or the other this year, because if it gets to July 1 and there's no owner, I'm without a contract. I'm gonna coach somewhere next year. I hope it's here. But I'm gonna coach somewhere next year. I hope.”
There are currently two openings in the NHL coaching ranks, both in the Western Conference: The Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche.
Would Tippett leave the Coyotes for one of them?

Well we should of seen this coming. The fans of the Phoenix Coyotes never get a break, never the easy road, only pain!
Pastor and his group’s bid were rejected and reports on why differ. The main reason was instead of paying for the team in full in 3-5 years, it seemed the group wanted about 15 years to close on the deal. Also it was reported they wanted to put no cash up front which Pastor denies feverishly. This puts us not at square one but for Coyotes fans, no satisfaction until we hear deal accepted. Then we can get a little excited.

The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will meet in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the 15th time and this will be the final meeting as conference mates. When the Red Wings move to the Eastern Conference next season once realignment kicks in they'll face the Blackhawks only twice a year going forward, unless the two meet in a Cup Final.
For now, they'll face off for the right to play in the Western Conference Final, a round where their last two playoff series against one another took place - both 4-1 series victories by the Red Wings.
Chicago cruised to the top spot in the West and their second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history, while Detroit stood on the playoff bubble before clinching a place in the postseason on the final day. To get to the second round, the Blackhawks ousted the Minnesota Wild in five games, while the Red Wings went the distance before knocking off the No. 2-seeded Anaheim Ducks.
Are the Red Wings just another step in the Blackhawks' road to a Cup? Can their long-timer division rivals upset the balance of power in the Western Conference?

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
One of the things people said constantly throughout the Pittsburgh Penguins' six-game series victory over the New York Islanders was that their play was well below the expected level of quality.
In fact, the most common refrain was that this particular brand of awful play -- rife with defensive irresponsibility and baffling lack of execution for a team that was pretty much incredible from start to finish this year -- was probably only good enough to get them past a try-hard pretender like the Islanders.

I sure hope not. That would be a huge loss for the Coyotes who have one of the best if not the best General manager / Coach tandems in Don Maloney and Tippett. Many of the things done in Phoenix are unexplainable to teams across North America. To make it to the Western Conference Finals without even a dominant scorer is mind boggling. What would we do with a few stars? We have a lot of young talent and change is not needed in that direction. We all hoped for an owner and sellouts every game. Steps backward are not what the doctor ordered.
So where will coach Tippett end up? Phoenix, Colorado, or elsewhere?
The Colorado Avalanche has expressed interest in retaining Dave’s services and they won’t be the only one. Tippett

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly noted last week that no group enjoys exclusivity in its bid to purchase the Coyotes. Apparently, that wasnt just lip service.
Sources familiar with the situation confirmed Friday that Darin Pastors group delivered its bid to purchase the Coyotes to the NHL offices in New York, first thing Friday morning.
Among the highlights:According to sources, the bid is believed to be highest purchase price currently offered for the team, though exact figures were unknown. The bid requires less annual commitment from the City of Glendale to manage Jobing.com Arena than numerous studies suggest the city must pay. That amount has long been a major hurdle to closing any deal. The bid includes an option to purchase Jobing.com Arena over a period of time.
The bid includes an out-clause after five years, which likely similar to any other groups bid.The Pastor group wants to forge a much deeper relationship with all of the Valleys youth hockey programs both to promote and grow the game.Pastor was

Antti Niemi is a Vezina Trophy candidate for the San Jose Sharks, which is rather remarkable when you consider he’s Antti Niemi.
That’s not a knock on his talent, which is considerable, or his importance to the Sharks, which was enormous. That’s to say that Antti Niemi getting credit for his goaltending prowess is a recent trend, and something we didn’t seen when he backstopped the Chicago Blackhawks to the 2010 Stanley Cup.
There was a perception that the Hawks won despite him. At best, he was an anonymous netminder that was competent but unspectacular for a Blackhawks team whose stars up front and on the blueline overshadow the goalies.
Corey Crawford knows the feeling.

Avalanche reportedly interested in Coyotes' Tippett

Its a foregone conclusion that if the owner-less Coyotes allow coach Dave Tippett to reach the end of his contract on June 30, he will have plenty of suitors.
Well, the line is already forming. Denver Post columnist Mike Chambers called Tippett a potential home-run hirewho has already been discussed for the Colorado Avalanche post. The Avs fired Joe Sacco after a third straight season without a playoff berth.
Tippett has repeatedly made it plain he wants to remain in Phoenix, where he and his wife, Wendy, just built a home. But the Coyotes continued ownership saga, and the low-budget restraints it has placed on he and soon-to-be free agent GM Don Maloney over the past four seasons have reached a boiling point because both are tired of entering each season with an undermanned roster.
We have a lot of players that work hard -- in the guts of the game, theyre good players, Tippett said recently. But at some point, we need some difference-makers.
