from Eric Gilmore at NHL.com,
San Jose Sharks forward Bracken Kearns already had played for seven different minor-league teams over six-plus seasons before he made his NHL debut, Oct. 20, 2011, as a member of the Florida Panthers.
Kearns turned 32 two days before making his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, May 14 for the Sharks, in Game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Kings.
If the Sharks gave out awards for Most Patient Player, it undoubtedly would go to Kearns, the son of former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dennis Kearns.
"My dad's first year in the NHL, he was 26 and he played 10 years," Kearns said. "He was a bit of a late-bloomer. He always told me in this game you need somebody to like you, a GM or a coach. Sometimes you have to go through people who aren't really big on you until you find the right situation, and this organization's been really good to me."

The IIHF World Championships wrapped up this weekend in Stockholm with Sweden topping Switzerland 5-1 in the gold medal game while the United States played Finland to a draw before finally emerging victorious in a shootout. (Why they have shootouts deciding elimination games is anyone’s guess)

The last goalie to make the cover of EA Sports’ NHL series? John Vanbiesbrouck of the Florida Panthers for NHL 97, of course. Which brings us to the latest update for the NHL 14 fan vote, and the fact that two of the four players remaining in the vote are men with masks:
In one half of the bracket, it’s Marty Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils against Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings; on the other half, it’s New York Islanders star John Tavares against Columbus Blue Jackets Vezina favorite Sergei Bobrovsky.
Datsyuk barely beat Joffrey Lupul in the quarterfinals. Tavares ousted Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers. Brodeur beat out James van Riemsdyk, while Bobrovsky eliminated Taylor Hall.
Were we to wager on the final two: Datsyuk vs. Bobrovsky. Although an all-goalie final would be aces.
Fans can vote an unlimited number of times at NHL.com/CoverVote . The round closes on May 26 at 11:59pm ET. This year fans can double their voting power by using these player specific hashtags on “Twitter Vote Thursdays.” Each player specific hashtag used on Twitter on Thursdays will be counted as two official votes. Fans can join the conversation about the cover vote every day by using #NHL14CoverVote on Twitter and Instagram.
Finally, here's a ramble screed about how the NHL 14 vote is fixed.

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
No one is ever going to be totally happy with the ways in which the NHL's referees or officials make their decisions. We can all agree on that.
If there's a game in which neither team is whistled for a penalty, both will likely complain that the refs missed calls on the other. If there's a game in which both teams receive 10 power plays, both will complain that the referees were overly harsh in doling out discipline. No one is ever especially happy with calls that go in between those two extremes,

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
One of the things people said constantly throughout the Pittsburgh Penguins' six-game series victory over the New York Islanders was that their play was well below the expected level of quality.
In fact, the most common refrain was that this particular brand of awful play -- rife with defensive irresponsibility and baffling lack of execution for a team that was pretty much incredible from start to finish this year -- was probably only good enough to get them past a try-hard pretender like the Islanders.

Do you remember the NHL Lockout? The feeling of dread and despair stemming from the possibility of not having any NHL hockey. The countless hours invested in reading about salary caps, contract length, players’ share, etc. etc. All that useless knowledge that made being a hockey fan feel like you were studying for your CPA exam. Remember?
The NHL Lockout was a dark time for many hockey fans, myself included. It was like the NHL was black-tar heroin and the lockout was your dealer getting busted. Hockey fans had to resort lesser product like college hockey, the Word Junior’s

And The Calder Trophy Winner Is…

The Calder Trophy is awarded to the Rookie of the Year in the NHL every year, and this year’s finalists are Brendan Gallagher of the Canadiens, Jonathan Huberdeau of the Panthers, and Brandon Saad of the Blackhawks.
Huberdeau is the easy choice for the trophy. He was the highest player of the three drafted, going third overall in the 2011 draft to the Florida Panthers. Huberdeau also led all rookies with 31 points, coming on fourteen goals and seventeen assists for the struggling Florida Panthers. He ranked second on the team in goals, and was a force every time he was on the ice. Huberdeau’s struggles to put up bigger numbers are understandable, and the blame certainly falls on the Panthers’ play as a team. The team finished in last in points in the entire league, mustering only 36 in 48 games. Huberdeau found a way to shine, however, being one of the most noticeable players in just his rookie year. Huberdeau is a goal scorer at heart; he even scored on his first career NHL shot, ...
