Much to nearly everyone’s disbelief, the Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead and continue their home ice advantage.
It’s quite easy to get ahead of ourselves in this situation. The Red Wings were never ahead in the series against Anaheim.

COMMENTARY | For the first time all season long, the Chicago Blackhawks appear vulnerable. The same team that got at least one point in its first 24 games has dropped two in a row to the Detroit Red Wings -- who now lead the series 2-1 -- a team they beat four times during the regular season.

Coming into their second-round series against the Chicago Blackhawks, it appeared that the Detroit Red Wings had little chance of winning. All of the stats favored the Blackhawks, who had already beaten Detroit in all four games during the regular season. But this is why the NHL playoffs are great. It does not matter what happened in the regular season; unlike any other league, the NHL playoffs become a completely different beast.
They are only halfway to pulling off the upset, but the Red Wings are playing extremely

DETROIT -- In the Chicago Blackhawks' minds, it was the turning point of Game 3.
For the Detroit Red Wings, it was only fair.
With the Wings leading 2-0 in the third period Monday night, Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson knocked Johan Franzen down along the boards in the Blackhawks' end.
While Franzen lay crumpled to the ice, the Blackhawks were headed the other way, with an odd-man rush.
That rush resulted in Patrick Kane's goal, which beat Jimmy Howard five-hole at 4:35, cutting Detroit's lead to 2-1.
The Wings were livid that no penalty was called on Hjalmarsson.
"It should have been a two-minute penalty," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "This is the way I look at it. Those referees are trying to get to the Stanley Cup final like the rest of us and it's fast.
"When I watch the replay and see it, it's a penalty. They don't get to watch the replay."
Just over a minute later, Viktor Stalberg, playing in his first game of the series, appeared t

The Red Wings have a lead in a series that isn't over yet after taking a 3-1 win in Detroit on Monday night. This one was a back-and-forth affair that could have gone any number of ways. Thankfully, it went the way I wanted it to.
People are going to complain about penalties for the next seven weeks after this one and they're all going to be right, no matter which side they're arguing. The refs made any number of mistakes. Neither team scored on the power play in nine combined opportunities (Detroit 5/4 Chicago). Overall, the Hawks put 40 shots on net compared to the Wings' 30.

It’s common for hockey players to use a soccer ball off the ice to warm up before games. It’s a good way to get your legs going and have some fun with your teammates and work on communicating. Unfortunately for Gustav Nyquist, his teammate Damien Brunner never told him he was going to be throwing the ball directly at his junk. The routine must have worked though because the Detroit Red Wings went on to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 and took a 2-1 series lead.
Brunner took to Twitter after the game to apologize, but didn’t seem to feel too sorry about it, the blank squares are iPhone emojis of a face laughing until it cries.

Aside from Gustav Nyquist’s highlight reel goal Monday night, he was the recipient of an unfortunate shot prior to Game 3.
During pre-game warmups in the locker room the Red Wings regularly like to dribble around a soccer ball. Here we see Nyquist doing just that along with what looks to be fellow teammate Damien Brunner… Only instead of dribbling the ball back Nyquist Brunner catches the ball and fires it into Gustav’s lower-body region.
Perhaps this helped Nyquist later on in the game and perhaps they play soccer differently in Switzerland…
UPDATE: We can now confirm it was Damien Brunner who almost destroyed Gustav Nyquist’s chances at ever having children…

Cotsonika offers a definitive profile of Red Wings coach Mike Babcock
Source: Yardbarker
Yahoo Sports' Nicholas J. Cotsonika wrote one helluva profile of Wings coach Mike Babcock, and like Babcock himself, it pulls no punches while leaning heavily upon the impressions Babcock has made upon Brendan Smith and Jakub Kindl:
The Wings made the playoffs for the 22nd consecutive season, winning their last four games to get in. They upset the second-seeded Ducks in the first round, coming back from 2-1 and 3-2 series deficits to win in seven games. They entered Monday night tangled in a 1-1 tie with the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks, responding to a 4-1 loss with a 4-1 win.
“He’s one of the best coaches in the NHL for a reason,” said defenseman Jakub Kindl.
It’s not because he’s warm and fuzzy. It has been an open secret around the Wings that Babcock has clashed with players for years now, from the top to the bottom of the roster. He has clashed with management this season, too, about how certain players are used and the composition of the roster, often issuing...

After Patrick Kane scored a goal to cut the Detroit Red Wings lead to one after a controversial no call when Johan Franzen was hit from behind, the referees were likely looking for a make up call. That’s exactly what Chicago Blackhawks fans will be saying happened here after a goal was disallowed because Andrew Shaw apparently interfered with goalie Jimmy Howard. Referee Brad Watson waved the goal off as soon as it crossed the goal line, so at least he was emphatic with his decision. From the NHL Rulebook: 69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper - This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ab...

No. 2 Star: Drew Miller, Detroit Red Wings
Miller was part of the 1-2 punch Detroit gave Chicago in the second period as his goal put the Red Wings up 2-0 and came 31 second after Gustav Nyquist opened the scoring. Miller was also credited with four blocked shots.
No. 3 Star: Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings

I get it. The Hawks will look at the goalposts and at the waved-off goal by Andrew Shaw and insist, despite the penalty disparity, that they should still be playing the Red Wings, who managed to hang on and defeat them 3-1.
I get that the media will insist that Shaw was pushed into the crease by Jakub Kindl, and that it should at least be 2-2--Puck Daddy already has the play of course (they were silent on Saturday, all evening long), and that Patrick Kane's goal was "completely legal" because the breakaway pass-over-Quincey-and-Smith's head was sent to him after Johnny Oduya cleanly hit johan Franzen who was down, but hey, the rules demand that play continue if one of what Eddie Olczyk would deem one of Oduya's "pushes" (see: his "push" to Justin Abdelkader, using his stick) just happened to drop a guy (clip? When one says “the fans at Joe Louis threw more octopi on the ice than the Wings put pucks in the opposing net,” one tends to feel weak, feeble, and like hockey really isn’t all that important of a sport, anyway.
But when 4 octopi hit the ice, each of which is gloriously twirled by arena manager and local deity Al Sobotka, you know we might be okay. Combine that with our record of scoring 3 goals whilst Jimmy is in net and Z as our Captain, and you have an OH MY GOODNESS I CANNOT BELIEVE WE’RE UP 2-1 ON CHICAGO.
This game was great. Lots of snarl. Chicago came out with a huge push. Angry about being embarrassed on home ice, like Xerxes learning he can bleed for the first time. What a storm

I came to the realization earlier today that I'm watching a series in which the Red Wings are huge underdogs. I knew this going in, but the realization was more about how I have never had to do this before. Never. Neither have you, if you're my age. Isn't that completely stupid? That's 20 years of being spoiled unlike any other fanbase in North American sports. Not just the success, but the incomparable level of consistency of always being either the favorite or at worst, being an even match. It's 10-month-old-milk level of spoiled. It's the forgotten-tenderloin-in-the-back-of-the-fridge-from-last-summer spoiled. We are a smelly generation of sports
