Couture's extension worth $30 million
According to sources, the answer is $30 million over five seasons.
The extension will make Couture, who was the ninth overall pick in 2007, the second-highest paid player from that draft class.
Couture led the Sharks in goals (21), was second in points (37), accrued only two minor penalties and averaged 18:05 minutes of ice time while appearing in all 48 regular-season games.
Tied for seventh in the league with 84 goals over the past three seasons, Couture has also been a bright spot in the playoffs having collected 17 goals and 33 points in 49 career postseason games.
San Jose has five players due to hit the unrestricted free-agent market July 5: forwards Raffi Torres, Scott Gomez and Tim Kennedy; defenseman Scott Hannan; and backup goalie Thomas Greiss.

Word broke Monday night that the Sharks and Logan Couture have agreed on a long-term extension that would keep one of the NHL’s rising stars in San Jose for the foreseeable future.
The Sharks, not surprisingly, have been mum on the deal. An official announcement isn’t expected until July 5, when the extension can first become legitimate. Couture, meanwhile, has blabbed about it to the whole world already on Twitter.
What was still unclear entering Tuesday, however, were the terms on the deal. That’s the one thing about this whole extension that Couture has had some restraint in revealing to anybody with an Internet connection.
But, now thanks to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, were have those details:
Five years, $6 million per year.
That kicks in when the final year of Couture’s current deal (worth $2.875 million) expires after this upcoming season, which means Couture in under contract with the Sharks through the 2018-2019 season, which is also when MLB will finally decide is the Sharks will...

TSN's Bob McKenzie reports Couture's new five-year deal with the San Jose Sharks includes an average annual salary of $6 million ($30 million total). Since being it in the first round ninth overall by the San Jose Sharks back in 2007, Logan Couture has taken the National Hockey League by storm. In each of the past two seasons Couture has led San Jose's offense scoring 30+ goals in an 82 -game regular-season has become an expectation for Couture and by all accounts the 24-year-old is just getting started. Last season, this young gun had 21 goals and 16 assists in 48 games. Logan Couture is the type of player who has the ability to be an All-Star for the rest of his career. The San Jose Sharks made a really smart move in signing Logan Couture sooner rather than later.

BOSTON – The yellow cloth towels twirl in the air after goals or when the TD Garden asks Boston Bruins fans to get loud. Sometimes they’re thrown on the ice in protest or taken home as souvenirs. Sometimes they end up on the concrete floors, soaking up spilled beer after the game.
And sometimes they’re meticulously stitched together by crazed Bruins fan into a full business suit that he wears to playoff games.
If the ‘rally towels’ contain some mystical powers of encouragement, then Ken Cruise is their living totem. The 21 year old Bruins fan from Rhode Island attended Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night and was an inescapable sight in Section 4: Cheering on the Jumbotron in a bright yellow suit constructed entirely from used rally towels.
Why create it?
“I get asked that a lot. I don’t know,” he said, with a smile. “Big fan of the team.”

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports that the deal is worth $23 million, with Datysuk earning $10 million in 2014-15; $7.5 million in 2015-16; and $5.5 million in 2016-17. His cap hit will be $7.667 million , highest on the team. The deal can't be officially announced until July 5 due to the fact that Datsyuk has one year at $6.7 million remaining on his current contract.
According to the Free Press , Datsyuk's agent met with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland Tuesday to finalize the negotiations.

The morning after every Stanley Cup Final game, Puck Daddy takes an expanded look at the race for playoff MVP. Here’s the one from after Game 2.
1. Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins
Rask was the top star in Game 3, posting his third shutout of the playoffs. He leads the postseason in goals-against average (1.64) and save percentage (.946), playing well enough to make fans ask “Timmy who?” (Which, incidentally, is the same question the IRS asked after Thomas snubbed the White House, we imagine.)
2. David Krejci, Boston Bruins
Krejci leads the NHL with 23 points in 19 playoff games, and is a plus-15. He went scoreless in Game 3, which makes him an honorary Blackhawk.
3. Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks
Crawford was the Blackhawks’ best player in Game 3, and couldn’t be faulted on either goal. He has a 1.74 GAA and a .946 save percentage, and if Chicago pulls itself out of this spiral it could be Crawford that reaps the benefit.

The deal doesn’t become official until July 5, when free agency begins. But was there an easier decision for the Sharks this offseason? Terms on the deal aren’t known at this time, and you could probably expect the Sharks to hold off on making any official announcement until July 5. Kurz speculates the five years will be added onto his current deal, which would keep him in teal until the 2018-2019 season....

Not long after Boston Bruins fans were in jovial spirits with the 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, San Jose Sharks fans joined in the happiness when news leaked that forward Logan Couture had agreed to a long-term extension.
Couture Tweeted "Big dayyyyy" as a hint, then CSN Bay Area's Brodie Brazil broke the good news for Sharks fans.
No term or dollar amount have been released yet. Couture cannot sign the deal until July 5, so there won't be an official announcement from the Sharks' side for a while. CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz Tweeted he expects the deal to be five years.
Couture was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the 2013-14 season, where he'll make $3 million in salary. Over the past three seasons, he's averaged 29 goals and 55 points.
With Couture locked up, that leaves Sharks general manager Doug Wilson with one less question going forward. His long-term plans for Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle, who will enter next season on the final years of their deals barring an extension, still remain to be seen.

Roenick on Seattle NHL rumors: 'I like my job'

Jeremy Roenick has never shied away from media interviews. But in the wake of reports that he would run the hockey operations for a Seattle NHL franchise if the Coyotes were to move there, Roenick noted twice Monday that no reporters had called him to verify the rumor before or after it surfaced.
"My job right now is to cover the NHL Stanley Cup Finals," said Roenick, who provides analysis for NBC. "I am really happy with my job. Its my dream job. I have always wanted to work for TV."
It should be noted that Roenick would neither confirm nor deny the report. It should also be noted that Roenick has shown an interest in the suit-and-tie side of the NHL in the past, even being connected to previous Coyotes suitors, albeit never concretely.
When this was raised, Roenick reiterated his stance.
"I like my job," he said.
CBCs Glenn Healy reported this weekend that if the Glendale City Council does not approve an arena lease deal to keep the Coyotes, the team will move to Seattle as par

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
Hockey fans will absolutely hate to hear this, but here it is anyway: There's one thing baseball does way better than hockey, and to which this sport really needs to switch as soon as humanly possible.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America makes a point to publish the ballots of every person who voted for Major League Baseball's awards, and that level of accountability is generally welcomed in the sports world at large. You know exactly who voted for exactly what, and writers who made some of the

Logan Couture points out Vezina injustice

Every player probably feels like their team's goaltender had a shot at the Vezina this year, and many could offer up a solid argument as to why. The San Jose Sharks' goaltender, Antti Niemi, had an outstanding season. He finished with a .924 save percentage and a 2.16 goals against average and helped the Sharks through some genuinely tough patches this past season.
Sergei Bobrovsky wound up winning the trophy this year and Logan Couture has a problem with that.
The tweet was later deleted, perhaps because he found it harsh, or perhaps people pointed out that Bob played in the Western Conference.
Couture still has a point, though. Columbus is in the Eastern Time Zone, and a player based in a team west of the Mississippi River hasn't won the award since Miikka Kiprusoff in 2006, and before that Grant Fuhr in 1988. Before that, the first and last time a goalie won it for a team west of the Mississippi was when the dynamic duo of Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante won ...
