I'm just like the Coyotes. I feel a blowout!
My daughter is now 16 days old and I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe. My days revolve around keeping track of how many times this small version of me poos and pees, singing silly songs about poos and pees and washing poos and pees off my Dudes on Hockey t-shirt, which appears to be her favorite target….not sure what she’s saying about our podcast….
I’m also pretty sure that I feel fairly poopy and pee-pee about the LA Kings making the Stanley Cup Finals, which is a virtual certainty at this point. Is this really happening? Are the Sharks really keeping T-Mac as head coach and thinking that adding Bryan Marchment will fix the disturbing penalty kill? Why am I still covered in doo-doo?

Miroslav Satan scored twice as Team Slovakia defeated the Czech Republic 3-1 in the IIHF World Championship semifinals and will face Team Russia in the gold medal game tomorrow at 6PM PST on NBC Sports (tape delay). This offseason, I began an ambitious series examining each individual player to suit up for the San Jose Sharks in 2011-12.
However, I took a couple days to grade the playoff performance of each San Jose Sharks player. Last week, I took a tangent to examine the team's reported pursuit of Rick Nash.
So why not resume the series with the player the Columbus Blue Jackets were reportedly interested in getting in return at the trade deadline? Here is a look at how this last six-plus months have told us about the good, bad and ugly truth moving forward on Logan Couture...

Since 2007, the Pacific Division has belonged to the San Jose Sharks. Well, at least during the regular season.
For four straight years, San Jose finished on top of the Pacific, twice finishing first in the entire Western Conference. But it was the 2007-08 Dallas Stars who knocked the Sharks out of the Conference Semifinals, and the 2008-09 Anaheim Ducks that knocked San Jose out of round 1.
In 2009-10, the Sharks finally followed through on their division title. That is to say, they went deeper into the playoffs than any other Pacific Division team. In 2010-11, they took it a step further, beating a division rival (the Los Angeles Kings) in a playoff series for the first time in franchise history.
In 2011-12, San Jose took a couple steps backward. First, they relinquished their reign atop the Pacific Division standings, finishing one point behind the Phoenix Coyotes. Second, they exited the playoffs before both Phoenix and L.A., despite finishing above the Kings in the standings.
Now, as the Coyotes and Kings battle for a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals, a Pacific Division team will go to the finals for the fifth time during the Sharks' existence. If Phoenix advances, San Jose will be the lone Pacific Division team to never make the Finals.
Early playoff exits are always disappointing, but when two bitter rivals enjoy the success that you thought you'd be enjoying, it's especially tough to swallow.
Here's a look at why two Pacific Division teams with lower expectations than San Jose have surpassed the Sharks this postseason.

Any NHL offseason—or one for any professional sport, for that matter—begins with an analysis of the organization from top to bottom. Inventory must be taken of assets and liabilities before one can move forward.
For a team like the San Jose Sharks that has high expectations, this examination must be harsh. A single playoff win is unacceptable.
In the past, such a finish would have been nothing short of a choke. But the 2011-12 Sharks problems were nearly season-long (they had three 15-game stretches with at least 10 wins but won just 12 games in the other 42), making a quick departure predictable considering their struggles against the St. Louis Blues in the regular season.
That being said, there were two teams that finished with lower in the league standings that played on longer. The Sharks beat one of those teams, the Los Angeles Kings, twice to end the season. No team scored less than L.A. during the regular season, yet they scored 15 goals on the same Blues squad in a four-game second-round sweep.
In other words, regular season struggles aside the Sharks should have done more in the playoffs. A good playoff run could have erased the failures that preceded it and they could be sitting where L.A. is after last night's win in Phoenix—in the driver's seat to win the Western Conference.
Thus it pays to examine the playoffs separately. That began by looking at the 14 forwards who played over the five games, and now it is time to examine the blue line and goalie play.
At the above link, a formula was explained for Offensive Quotient (OQ) and Defensive Quotient (DQ) to come up with a final grade. These formulae consider only the total contribution, thus appropriately giving players who are on the ice more opportunities to score higher.
Because the blue line's offensive contribution results in fewer points (often they touched the puck too early to get an assist) and more giveaways, their OQ formula is different:
Double Assists x (Assists +1 / Giveaways +1) + Goals + Game-Winning Goals
Likewise, more stress in on the back end defensively. They are on the ice more but have fewer opportunities for takeaways, leaving them in the red for possession differential. Thus, their DQ formula is as follows:
The sum of triple Takeaways + double Blocks + Hits is divided by six and modified by one-tenth that players possession differential (takeaways - giveaways, adjusted by faceoffs if they took any)
Students are graded strictly on the numbers in a course at one of the fine Bay Area universities. There is no consideration for this student had to work and raise a child while attending compared to another who has every resource money can buy.
Hence, the following players are listed from best to worst grade strictly according to the formula...

After a 2010-11 season in which he led the Sharks defense in both relative and on-ice Corsi, even-strength +/- per 60 minutes and finished just behind Dan Boyle in even-strength points per 60 (Boyle scored at a 0.91 clip compared to Demers' 0.90) a lot was expected of Jason Demers coming into this year. The NHL’s conference finals are well underway and it looks as if through three games of the Western Conference Finals, the LA Kings are a mortal lock to make their second Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history. Meanwhile in the Eastern Conference Finals, the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils have split the first two games of their best of seven series. The Rangers and Devils have been close all season and this playoff series could last awhile as both teams except for one period have been neck and neck. If the LA Kings clinch their playoff series versus the Phoenix Coyotes Sunday, they may have anywhere from a seven to ten day layoff depending on what the Rangers and Devils do (not that the Kings would mind, of course). Game 1: LA Kings 4 Phoenix 2: Dwight King, who scored a grand total of five goals during the regular season scored twice as Dustin Brown added the game winning goal early in the third period. The Kings were dominant in the shots on goal category too out shooting Phoenix 17-4 in the first period and 48-27 for the game. Anze Kopitar put LA up 1-0 just 3:53 into the first period with a backhanded shot that beat Mike Smith, who has been solid in the net for the Coyotes all season. The Kings were physically imposing throughout the game and gave the Coyotes very little space on the ice to work with, effectively shutting down the desert dogs offensive attack. Phoenix did get goals from Derek Morris and Mikkel Boedker. It was Boedker who scored the game tying goal for the Coyotes in the second period being one of the few to beat the Kings goalie up close in these playoffs. The others Coyotes goal was a bit of a small fluke as Morris halfway through the first period launched a 98 foot shot from center ice that skipped off of the ice in front of Quick before getting past him and into the net. For the Kings another strong opening game on the road. For the Coyotes, their troubles were only beginning.
Game 2: LA Kings 4 Phoenix 0: Jonathan Quick made 24 saves while Jeff Carter scored a hat trick as the Kings outplayed the Coyotes from the opening face off until the final horn. Dwight King broke the seal on the scoreless tie with 6:45 remaining in the first period tipping in a slap shot from Drew Doughty. Mike Smith made a number of strong saves early prior to King’s goal. In the second period the Coyotes mounted their best offensive surge on Quick launching six shots on net in the first four minutes of the period. However the Kings net minder was on the ball and made every save, and would have nothing to do with the Coyotes net assault except to turn away their best shots. Just seconds after this rally ended for Phoenix, LA’s Carter would net the first of his three goals at 4:47 of the second period. Things then would get chippy with Shane Doan getting five minutes plus the gate for boarding. Carter’s second goal would score with just over a minute remaining in the period as he beat Smith with a power play goal during a Kings five on three man advantage. In the final period Martin Hanzal would draw a boarding penalty that netted a game misconduct and a one game suspension from Mr. Shanahan. LA would out shoot Phoenix in the contest 40-24. Phoenix though did rack up over 50 minutes in penalties, so the Coyotes actually did lead in one category.
Game 3: LA Kings 2 Phoenix 1: Jonathan Quick again made 18 saves and Dwight King’s goal early in the third period stood up as the Kings used the “Rope-A-Dope” defense to grab their commanding 3-0 lead in this series. The game was the closest and mostly tightly contested of the three. However for the Coyotes it was just another evening of frustration before over 19K at the Staples Center. Mike Smith would make 26 saves and do all he could to keep Phoenix alive in the contest. Maybe the best summary of how this series has gone for Phoenix could by summed up in the first 3:10 of the second period. Daymond Langkow gave the desert dogs their first lead in any game this series when he bet Quick with a hard wrister at the 1:03 mark of the period. The Coyotes lead however would last as long as a ice cube on a Phoenix sidewalk in July or August. Anzi Kopitar would score on a break away goal just 2:07 later beating Smith five hole. The Coyotes could not mount any offensive attacks especially late as they were held to just four shots on goal in the final period.

Doug has some terrible excuse, like caring for a brand new small person that constantly cries and demands attention, furthering the human race. Reports have surfaced recently that Sharks head coach Todd McLellan will be staying in San Jose for at least another season.
Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports reported this week:
"Doug Wilson apparently told Todd McLellan three days after the season ended that the Sharks' bench boss was staying. Odd that there's been no announcement, but it sounds like there is a debate about assistant coaches."
The debate about assistant coaches makes perfect sense.
The Sharks lackluster abilities on special teams, primarily the penalty kill, are traditionally units that a teams assistant coaches are charged with handling.
McLellan's resume speaks for itself, but there is an obvious need for a shakeup in the Sharks dressing room.
And management is always one of the safest places to start.

As if it was not a virtual reality that San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan was going to stay on as the team's coach next season, CBC's Elliotte Friedman is reporting that McLellan was indeed told just three days after the season ended that he would be back with the team in 2012-13.
Doug Wilson apparently told Todd McLellan three days after the season ended that the Sharks' bench boss was staying. Odd that there's been no announcement, but it sounds like there is a debate about assistant coaches.
The report would mean that the Sharks' front office told McLellan of his return to the team before actually publicly backing GM Doug Wilson in a statement last month.
As mentioned before, the report comes as no surprise. McLellan's team made the Western Conference playoffs by surging through their schedule over the last two weeks of the season, claiming the seventh seed.
However, the meltdown that ensued in the first round of the playoffs to the St. Louis Blues, who ended up getting outplayed in every facet of the game by the red-hot Los Angeles Kings, had some hinting at McLellan's job possibly being on the rocks.
It turns out that was not the case, and McLellan has been rightfully given a second chance with the team that he took to the Western Conference Finals in back-to-back seasons.
The issue now seems to be the assistant coaches, which now become the center of attention. Freidman hints that the Sharks may be looking for an assistant coach with more experience and one that could further the miserable penalty kill of last season.
McLellan would fight hard for his guys, but the discussion appears to be about adding someone who had a lengthy NHL career.
Freidman also hinted at the idea of Bryan Marchment joining McLellan's staff next season, which CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz had some thoughts on. Even former Sharks player Mike Ricci is reportedly in the mix.
Last week, we mentioned Bryan Marchment as a possible contender. Mike Ricci might be another as both already work for the organization. Would McLellan, though, want to go "off the board" and recruit a former Red Wing?
If the report was not proof enough, things are changing in San Jose. The franchise has no choice, though, and now that McLellan's job is safe—or has been safe for a while—things can begin to get moving.
It sounds like nailing out a successful and experienced core of assistant coaches is first on the list, but we can expect much more from this franchise that is dead-set on returning to the top of the Western Conference in 2012-13.

Not every deal is a good one, sometimes you think you’re getting a Brodeur and you wind up with a DiPietro. But for every good side that gets a bad deal, the other side could get a worse one. Take the Heatley/Havlat deal for instance: Heatley was not the most popular person in San Jose, and many people didn’t shed a tear when the trade was announced. In fact it seemed like a huge win for the Sharks, but then Havlat took a wrong step and was sidelined for a major part of the season. Heatley continued his downward trend for a third straight season, so both teams wound up not getting much from the deal. Taking a look back at the dealings of this season, the question to today’s roundtable was this:
