Ariz. US Attorney resigns, lauds office's progress

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona's former U.S. attorney made reservation crimes and civil rights violations a priority during his tenure that ended Tuesday amid investigations into a botched law enforcement operation aimed at bringing down major gun smugglers.
Dennis Burke stepped down along with Kenneth Melson, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Burke said in his resignation letter to President Barack Obama that his office has made "unprecedented gains in so many areas," including white collar fraud.
