Final: Wake Forest 35, Florida State 30
This is not that hard to figure out.
Florida State is not as good as many of us had expected, and Wake Forest is much, much better.
You can talk about injuries and look for excuses, but the bottom line is this: Florida State has lost its past three games because the other teams were better and made fewer mistakes. The Noles had four turnovers against Wake Forest, nine penalties, and were just 2-of-7 on third downs. They were held to under 100 rushing yards.
Today's story should be as much about Wake Forest's improvement as it should be about Florida State playing its way right out of the ACC race and the top 25. With a dramatic thud.
Meanwhile, the Deacs are 3-0 in the ACC race for the first time in school history and have put themselves in position for a showdown with Clemson on Nov. 12 as the two best teams in the Atlantic Division. Wake Forest has not lost since its season-opener against Syracuse, the Deacs have surpassed last season's three-win total, and they should be confident heading into a home game against Virginia Tech.
This is the ACC, where anything can happen. Today, anything did, and suddenly, Wake Forest is one of the teams to beat again.
As for Florida State?
Maybe next year.
