While first-year Miami coach Al Golden and first-year Maryland coach Randy Edsall have gotten off to rocky starts, North Carolina interim coach Everett Withers is making his case to become the program's next head coach.
And until this season, Withers had never had a head-coaching job before.
Granted, much more goes into this decision than North Carolina's 4-1 record right now. With the NCAA investigation clouding the program's once-shiny academic image, the next head coach must be as diligent and successful off the field as he is on it. There is no margin for error on the academic side, and no wiggle room when it comes to athletes receiving improper benefits of any kind.
