Pirates Agree to Terms with Wyatt Mathisen

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with second round pick Wyatt Mathisen, Pirates Prospects has learned. Mathisen, a prep catcher, had a commitment to the University of Texas. However, he will be turning that down to start his pro career with the Pirates. He’s expected to be part of the growing list of names who will report to Bradenton on Monday to officially sign.
Mathisen is a potential two-way catcher. He’s very athletic, enough that his high school coach used him as a shortstop, rather than behind the plate. He’s got a strong arm and has the ability to be a good defensive catcher. The Pirates saw him in his limited time behind the plate, and like him as a catcher going forward.
