Stefan Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! talks about joining New Jersey Devils (VIDEO) (Puck Daddy)
PITTSBURGH — When the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers in the 2012 Eastern Conference Final, goalie Marty Brodeur hinted that there was some measure of retribution for the Rangers' 1994 conference final victory over the Devils.
You know, the Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! goal in double OT of Game 7, as Stephan Matteau forever haunted Devils fans and helped the Rangers eventually win the Stanley Cup?
Well, less than a month after Brodeur helped bust the ghosts of 1994, who do the Devils select with the No. 29 overall pick in Friday's NHL Entry Draft? That would be Stefan Matteau of the USHL, the son of their 1994 tormentor.
"It's obviously pretty surprising, given the history of my name. But I couldn't be more thrilled," he said.
Said Lou Lamoriello to Fire and Ice:
"There was no question of where he was rated," Lamoriello said. "And even in the meeting (Thursday) night his name came up with reference to is it a concern and I said, 'Absolutely, unequivocally no. A player is a player.'"
Lamoriello then joked, "We might not let his father come to watch him play."
At least everyone assumed he was joking ...
