1997: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays drafted Robby Hammock in the 89th round of the amateur draft, but he was not signed. Hang on: weren't we here before? Could be, as Hammock had also been drafted, by the other Florida team, two years previously and 23 rounds higher. The other thing that stands out is... 89th round. He was the very last player taken, with overall pick number 1,604, and only the Rays took part after the 70th round. There will be only forty rounds tomorrow.
