Virginia Tech has now won three straight games against Miami, and the Hurricanes have not won in Blacksburg since 2005. The Hokies are 6-2 against the Canes since the two joined the ACC in 2004.

Fake field goal fails

Instead of taking a sure three points (it was a 31-yard attempt), Miami tried a fake field goal on its first offensive series and failed to convert.

Holder Spencer Whipple took the snap and ran to his right to try to pick up the one yard needed for a first down. Hokies linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow wrapped him up behind the line of scrimmage, and a band of Tech defenders came in to help gang-tackle him for a 2-yard
