The minute the A's traded Mark McGwire to the Cardinals in July 1997, Jason Giambi stepped in as the new first baseman.
Brandon Belt and Brandon Moss have been at their major-league best recently, Belt hitting in nine straight games, including a three-game stretch against Houston in which he homered every day, and Moss homering six times in eight games and winning American League Player of the Week honors.
A's management loved Daric Barton, who could play defense and compose a nice on-base percentage, but his best year resulted in a so-so 10 homers and 57 RBIs in 159 games.
