The Portland Thorns traveled up I-5 to take on the Seattle Reign at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington. Seattle received an added boost to their confidence with the announcement that Hope Solo would be starting in between the pipes for the first time this season. Seattle came out of the gates quickly and saw quite a bit more of the possession then the first time these two teams met but neither team was able to create any dangerous chances.
As the game progressed the depth and lack of major injuries to the Portland Thorns gave them the edge over a tired Reign team. Even with the edge it took a controversia PK call for Portland to break the deadlock. On

WASHINGTON -- Poor road form is no longer a hallmark of the Portland Timbers, but poor form overall continues to haunt D.C. United.
The Timbers remained unbeaten away from JELD-WEN Field following a comprehensive 2-0 victory over D.C. United in front of 14,131 fans at RFK Stadium on Saturday night. Resurgent wide forward Rodney Wallace had no problems making himself at home in his former digs, scoring the eventual game-winning goal against his old club and helping Portland improve to 2-0-5 on the road.

I'm still not sure what to make of the game as a whole, but the Portland Timbers, for their part, were able to earn three needed points on the road. Really, though, that should be too surprising given just how awful this D.C. United team is. I don't know what happened between last year's playoffs and this season, but clearly something is amiss for them.

The Thorns are back on the road after a two game home streak. This time, however, they're sticking fairly close to home traveling only up to Seattle to take on the Seattle Reign. While the Reign remains one of the weaker teams in the league, Jessica Fishlock is sure to give the Thorns just as much trouble as she did last week.

After a quiet start to the game, the Portland Timbers strike first. On a Portland throw-in to Frederic Piquionne, the forward heads straight to goal before finding a wide open Rodney Wallace in the left channel. Wallace takes one touch and fires with his left foot near post to make it 1-0 for the Timbers. The goal is Wallace's fourth of 2013 and sets a new career high.

The Portland Timbers have hit a bit of a road game lull. While the tam as a whole is undefeated in 10 games, most of those are draws, particularly when playing away from home. Their last and only road game win came by way of Sporting Kansas City five matches ago. Since then they've tied FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps on the road. Luckily today they have a chance to reverse their fortunes somewhat against a struggling D.C. United team. We all know what this team is capable of. Let's hope they can prove it once again.

Saturday’s date with at D.C. United (4pm PT, ROOT SPORTS, 750 AM The Game / La Pantera 940) will mark their second of three consecutive league road games. Four of Portland’s next six games are away. It’s a stretch that would have spelled disaster in the team’s first two seasons in MLS, which saw Portland win on the road just three times in two years.

You know that scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles when Steve Martin finally loses it? After an entire movie's worth of mishaps and bad luck, crappy turns of fate, and some depressing mishaps, Martin's character, Neal, has suffered more indignities than any man could bear, and none of it is his fault. He has been robbed, he has been stranded, and he has accidentally stuck his hands between a stranger's butt cheeks --and that's just the beginning. He has reached the tipping

The Portland Timbers continue their three match road swing on May 25 with their only meeting against D.C. United in the nation's capital. Considering these teams have played just three times in MLS history yet each match has featured something rather unusual - a strange penalty kick sequence, a crazy 15 minute sequence at the end of a match originally delayed by a hurricane, or a phantom handball call - I wonder what odd event will happen this weekend.

But, as usual, before we tackle tomorrow's game, let's see how everybody did last week:
Overall, most of you guys were predicting a win. Not necessarily a bad prediction given the Timbers' history at BC Place, but certainly not what ended up playing out. Only two guessed the correct score of 2 - 2, as such they're our winners

DC United has probably been one of the most surprising teams of the season. But not because they've been doing well -- that would have been expected -- rather because they've done so poorly. Let's all remember just a few months ago, last November, the club came very close to being in the MLS Cup Final, having lost out to the Houston Dynamo. Really, this seemed like a club who was finally getting back on solid standing. Perhaps not the world-beater it once was, but at least respectable.
Honestly, I'm not really sure what's happening with the DC team. So, to

The Portland Timbers find themselves in a familiar place, at least those players who were on the roster a year ago. One year ago, almost to the day, Portland learned they could potentially play the Seattle Sounders in the fourth Round of the US Open Cup. All they would need to do is beat a side from the United States Adult Soccer Association. A team called Cal FC.
Portland came into the game with a 4 game unbeaten streak with three ties and one win. All signs pointed to a possible rebound from a tough April and that John Spencer and his team were set to take the USOC seriously. The game

Today's notable absence was Ryan Kawulok. No information was available on his status, although Kawulok did practice yesterday. UPDATE: Kawulok was waived today.

Welcome back to the latest installment of the power rankings. Each week I look at a bunch of power rankings, and amalgamate the results here. Typically I look at six reports, but this week its only 5 (ESPN, Bleacher Report, Sporting News, MLS, and The Oregonian), as Soccer By Ives hasn’t yet published any rankings for week 12 (which is understandable with all the news coming out yesterday about Manchester Yankees City Football Club).
When I look at the rankings I take an average to see how teams stack up overall, and then also look at points in the past 5 games as another measure of form. Additionally I look at the average movement in

A second half goal by way of Austin Savage in the second half was enough to see the USL Pro side through to the next stages of the tournament, while the Timbers U-23 side was eliminated.
From the left side, Prince sent in a well-placed cross to the back post, where Savage was trying to hold his ground against Timbers U-23s defender Mitch Lurie. Savage was just able to get his head to the ball and placed a shot inside the top
